Quote :
"Open it up. The playbook? Forget that. Dave Clawson's offense sees more formations die on its notebook binders each week than a Kansas City slaughterhouse.

Open up the starting quarterback competition. Do it now, or risk losing the team. Do it now, or risk jobs. Fair or not, that's the football graveyard confronting Tennessee's coaches in the mournful hours of their third loss, this one a 14-12 defeat Saturday at Auburn. If an inexcusable 27-24 overtime loss at UCLA wasn't warning enough and a methodical, 30-6 dismantling at home last week by Florida not ample reinforcement, this was.

If Vanderbilt sitting alone atop the SEC Eastern Division and Duke resting its record at the exact opposite of Tennessee's 1-3 mark -- 3-1 -- wasn't enough, this performance was.

Open it up.

"It is something that we have to look at in every position in the field," said UT head coach Phillip Fulmer, who's steering a listless 1-3 ship for the first time since 1994. "Tomorrow, as the week goes on, we will break down film. Eight-for-24 (passing) is unacceptable. We need to be sure that he (Crompton) is finding the receivers and getting the ball to the people who make plays for us."

Open up the starting quarterback competition. Stop paying lip service to Nick Stephens and B.J. Coleman in their backup battle to Jonathan Crompton. Give them a chance to take meaningful snaps -- in practice and next Saturday against Northern Illinois. Do it now, or risk completely losing a team clinging together right now like hot fuzz on spandex.

A sold-out Jordan-Hare Stadium crowd of 87,451 watched Tennessee's Crompton-led offense four times begin second-half possessions on Auburn's side of the 50-yard line. Three of the four possessions resulted in punts.

"It was tough. Tough times come and go," said Crompton, who finished 8-for-23 for a paltry 67 yards. "This is obviously one of the tough times. We're going to get back and correct it, just like we always do here. Get back, watch film and correct it and go from there."

One correction would be a change at quarterback, if for no other reason than it's hard to imagine things possibly could get worse. On seven second-half possessions Tennessee's offense never started inside of its 35-yard line. Six of those possessions lasted just four plays or less. Five of them didn't take 100 seconds off the clock.

All of that inefficiency was enough, both Fulmer and Clawson said after the game, to at least consider a quarterback switch midway through this contest.

"We discussed it briefly during the game and decided against it," said Clawson, who indicated Stephens would have been that quarterback. "Jonathan made that really good run on third down that got us the first down, and we just stuck with him. I don't want to get into it. We talked about it briefly and decided not to do it."

Crompton sustained the Vols' lone touchdown drive with an impressive 15-yard run on third-and-14. But he completed his last pass with seven minutes to play. In the third quarter. The stretch performance in this game for the junior from Waynesville, N.C., was all too reminiscent of his season-opening effort at UCLA, when he went 21 second-half minutes without a completion. So how did Crompton explain his 34.8 percent completion percentage? A performance that featured multiple batted down balls and no less than four instances where Sarah Palin's home was closer to Russia than Crompton's passes were to his receivers?

Q: Jonathan, you were 8 of 23 today and didn't have a completion in the fourth quarter. Do you feel like you were on the same page as your receivers?

"Like I just said, tough times come and go," Crompton said.

The tough times -- inexplicable, fundamental turnovers and borderline ineptitude -- are lingering far too long for the Vols' offense. For the season Crompton is now 64 of 123 for 658 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. For his career Crompton now is (38 of 78) 102 of 201 with six touchdowns and nine interceptions. In three games against BCS-level foes, the Vols' offense has mustered 35 points.

"We'll look at it. Obviously we're always trying to put the best players that give us the best chance to be successful on the field regardless of their class or their experience level," Fulmer said of opening the quarterback competition. "Jonathan has been the guy we felt gave us the best chance. It may be that way on Monday, it may not. We'll see."

Of course, these could just be passing -- granted, poor choice of words -- times.

"Tough times come and go," Crompton said.

Indeed. So, too, do starting quarterbacks.
"

haha, this actually happened.....

Quote :
"KNOXVILLE — Arian Foster snickered.

He sat down and peeled tape off his ankles.

Practice had just ended last week. The Tennessee starting tailback, a senior on the verge of becoming UT's all-time leading rusher, was requested for media interviews.

He had a demand: whoever interviewed him had to speak Pterodactyl, some made-up dinosaur language. No interview was conducted.

It was kind of funny and it fit Foster's quirky personality. But considering the environment and Foster's recent demeanor, it quickly became sad.

The reason is because 10 yards away, Coach Phillip Fulmer was addressing reporters about his quarterback crisis. Fulmer discussed how starter Jonathan Crompton and backup Nick Stephens would duke it out for the starting job against Northern Illinois.

It was a national story about an offense looking for leadership.

It could determine the fate of Tennessee's season and Fulmer's legacy.

"Veeeeek! Veeeeek! Veeeeek!" Foster shrieked."

His lack of language skills should not prevent the grand opening of his Philosophy store though

Willie Martinez can make Steve Tannyhill look like Steve Young...but UGA is tough after a bye week. If UT can't move the ball, this could be ugly

Tennessee is horrible this year. Tennessee hasnt been that good the last two years and beat the living fuck out of the each time...if Georgia doesnt beat them this year I dont know if they ever will again.

Should be something like 41-14

I truly believe Tennessee is going to pull the upset this weekend.

Bama is due for a loss. Cody is out. It's at Neyland. Tennessee has some momentum. And Fulmer tends to win games like this.

Vegas had it at +6 earlier, up to +7 today. I'll take it.

^ I agree with all of that... BUT... this is the worst Tennessee team in 25 years so I dont know if the trends (especially Fulmer being great as a "no way they will win" underdog) apply here...

"Honest opinion of Knoxville and Neyland..... Reply
I'm being as objective as possible with this. I had a blast there this weekend and come to realize that UT is not as bad as I once thought. So here are my Good and Bad from the trip.

Good:

+Great atmosphere inside the stadium, very loud and nice compact set up that makes every seat in the house great.
+The fans we sat around were great. Nice people and knowledgable.
+The Vol walk was very cool, one of the better pre game activities I have seen.
+Petro's is good, wish we had it here.
+Your band is the best I have seen. The circle drill was awesome and they make the million dollar band look like the 2 cent band.
+The splitting of the T was one of the cooler things I have seen.
+The bald eagle at the start of the game was awesome, gave me chill bumps.
+Overall just a great experience.
+Vol Navy is a cool sight.
+The overall atmosphere is hard to beat.
Bad:
-The strip was un impressive. The only good places I saw was the half barrell and Buffalo wild wings.
-The campus is out of date and not very pleasing to the eye. To many hills and not enough parking.
-Who ever plans your game day needs to be fired with Fulmer.
-The girls were among the most average I have seen in the South.
-The tail gating is terrible. No real defined spot where everyone hangs out. It's mainly in back allies and parking lots behind stores.
-Neyland outside appearence is ugly. It has it's charm but something that nice on the inside shouldn't look like that on the outside.
-Outside the stadium, just not a good set up for pre game stuff. Was a little under whelmed considering it was UA vs UT.
-A band that talented shouldn't play rocky top every 5 minutes on the dot.

Overall, I had a great time. I will definately make the trip again. I'm sure had the roles been reversed it would have been a different story, but everyone was great to us. The most obnoxious person we had in our section was a young Bama guy that needed to be stomped. Every fan base has em. It was hard to get a read on everything due to the dis gruntled fans but I can only imagine how loud that place would be if ya'll were a good football team. After making the trip UT has been relegated back to my second most hated team behind Auburn. I have been to UGA several times, Kentucky, GT, UA hundreds of times, Ole Miss and Miss St. By far, outside of UA, this is the best trip I have made. It was far from what I expected, I hope you guys get a great coach and are back in the top 5 so this rivalry can get the balance of power in the SECE and SECW where it belongs."

The part about tailgating sucking just depends on what you are used to... there arent that many large open lots near the stadium, so you dont have what you have at State and other places, these huge fields of cars/tents. Like he said, most of its tucked into parking lots, yards, behind buildings etc. BUT, you also dont have a stadium 5 miles from campus, its smack in the middle of it and you do a lot of tailgating at bars (who set up bands, tents, etc. in their parking lots) before heading in to the game.

I heard the Fullmer rumors this morning and didn't believe it. My friend said he was stepping down today. The thing is until either Tennessee's high school football gets better or Mark Richt, Nick Saban, and Butch Davis don't have their states on lockdown, UT's recruiting isn't going to get that much better.

I went to a UT game a few years ago and had a blast. The atmosphere was awesome, tailgaiting was great, and the people were friendly. The only thing I didn't like about it was the $70 ticket I had to pay to get in the game.

^^ yeah, Richt has really hurt... we never went into Florida too much (although Travis Henry comes to mind) but we raped Georgia and South Carolina for years, especially Georgia. Fulmer has still had some luck their recently, including the maybe the best Tennessee defensive player ever at this point in his career (Eric Berry) but Richt has definitely closed the borders some.

Fulmer always got a ton of talent from California. The Clausens, Donte Stallworth etc.

this sounds promising! although this does almost make me feel bad for Phil

Quote :
"COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton stood on the sidelines the last six or seven minutes of Tennessee's 27-6 loss to South Carolina, no doubt pondering the future of his football program that slipped to 3-6 on the season and lost for the 10th time since the onset of the 2007 campaign. Four of those losses this season have been by double digits, as have seven of the 10.

Hamilton stood in the back of the media room as his head coach again spoke of repeated offensive mistakes that have haunted this team the entire season.

As Fulmer left the media center, Hamilton walked out with him and made his way to the buses to leave Williams-Brice Stadium. When asked for comment on his head coach, Hamilton declined comment.

"Out of respect for Phillip, now is not the time to make a comment," Hamilton said.

When asked further, Hamilton told VolQuest.com that "no decision has been made."

But in and around the Tennessee locker room, the emotion certainly left the feeling not of will there be a change at head coach but when.

The emotions of Fulmer's family, Vicky and youngest daughter Allison, told the story. Teary-eyed, the two hugged players and coaches as they made their way outside out of the locker room to head back to Knoxville.

In the media center, Fulmer was asked what he would say to the Tennessee fans who have concerns about the direction of their football program after another double-digit loss and the fifth game where his team didn't score more than 14 points. Fulmer seemingly had little to say but pointed to his 17 seasons at the helm.

"You know, I think you've probably said all that needs to be said. I don't have to say it, actually," Fulmer said to a reporter. "Obviously disappointed … certainly this is not the way Tennessee is supposed to be. It's not what (the players) came here for. I certainly feel like with time we'll be back on track. I've never had back-to-back losing seasons since I've been here.

"Usually when we've had a bad one we've followed it with a darn good one, the once it has happened in 17 years."

Fulmer was referencing the 2005 season, when the Vols stumbled to a 5-6 finish. Tennessee now has lost 20 games in the last four seasons with a remaining stretch of Wyoming (Nov. 8), Vanderbilt (Nov. 22) and Kentucky (Nov. 29)."

I looked around some Bama and South Carolina sites and they arent even having fun beating our asses, keep seeing things like "dammit, this isnt even a real Tennessee team" and "ugh, never thought I would be so let down by a win over Tennessee" hahaha
