Somebody flipped a switch on Franzen or something on March 1st. He's been godlike ever since then.

De has a powerhouse of a team - yet zero atmosphere in the rink. Living on a prayer as a goal song, are you fucking kidding me?

The seats are all filled by corporate suits. Which is good, because no one else in the city can afford to go to the games anymore.

There was an exhibition between Finland and Canada for the upcoming World Championships being held in Quebec City and Halifax, Nova Scotia. If you wish to watch, it is here. The goalie for Team Canada is Cam Ward and some other Hurricanes are playing. Go to the following link and click on the TV. Allow some time for it to load. The announcer is hilarious to listen to.

Holy crap, Sean Avery had a heart attack this morning????

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local&id=6112948

Quote :
"NEW YORK (WABC) -- The New York Daily News is reporting New York Ranger Sean Avery was rushed to a Manhattan hospital Wednesday in cardiac arrest just hours after the team's loss.

Avery, 28, arrived at St. Vincent's Medical Center about 3 a.m., according to the report.

The Rangers had just lost 5-3 a short time earlier in the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden.

Avery, was traded to the Rangers last year from Los Angeles, and lives in Manhattan."

Cardiac arrest? He entered the hospital under his own power and was diagnosed with a lacerated spleen. Out for the rest of the playoffs (which may be one more game).

EDIT: Beaten to it

DOUBLE EDIT: On another note, this is absolutely hilarious http://goingfivehole.blogspot.com/2008/04/wacky-european-goalie-goal.html

isn't it also illegal in N. American hockey for the goalie to cross the center ice line. I seem to remember a long time ago, seeing Patrick Roy carry the puck up and do a spin move across center ice and was then called for a penalty. Anyone else remember something like this?

^ I don't remember that, but I once saw Glenn Hall make a relay pass between his blue line and the red line while going to the bench on a delayed penalty. But yes, it's illegal for the goaltender to cross the red line for any other purpose than to go the bench on a penalty, and if he touches the puck on the other side of the red line it's an immediate whistle. A minor penalty for "leaving the crease" can technically be given for leaving the privileged area (between the faceoff dots back to the boards) at any time, but in this era where goalies routinely go to the bench at every TV timeout, it's not called in that way.

It's illegal in all hockey. That goal in that video didn't count, sadly.

I have no idea why, but I would guess that given the amount of extra padding and such that goaltenders are allowed to wear, there could be some sort of unfair advantage if say they were to come into the offensive zone as an attacker instead of bringing on a 6th man.

Part of it is a fighting aspect...the dude who is heavily padded and has two much larger weapons than all ofthe other players isn't allowed to just go skating around where ever he likes. There's also the argument that some of his privileges should be limited since he already has so many (he can cover the puck anywhere in his area, whereas anyone else surrenders a penalty shot for the same event, etc.).

Dear Flyers Fans,

How's it going? Can I ask you to show just a tad more respect for the game tonight? Just so you understand, you are not at a white trash WWE event. Chanting "asshole" is reserved for wrestling. Also booing the anthem - not cool.

Thanks!

If you want to get technical, it's quarterfinals, semifinals, Conference Finals, and Stanley Cup Finals.

[Edited on April 30, 2008 at 10:15 PM. Reason : don't get technical with me]

It can't be a final when no one dares touch the trophy they win from it for fear it might lose them the trophy they really want to win. So it's the Stanley Cup Semifinals, cause no one gets congratulated by their city for winning the President's Trophy, the Campbell Trophy, or the Prince of Wales Trophy.

^ The crowd is there cause they got to the Stanley Cup Finals. No one starts the season and says "I'm aiming to win the Prince of Wales Trophy". They aim to win the Stanley Cup, the Prince of Wales and the Campbell is little more than an afterthought on the way to the big prize that everyone actually cares about.

How excited were Ottawa fans this year on being the defending Prince of Wales Trophy Champions?

its the same way as Vulcan91 stated for all the other major sports:

NFL: NFC/AFC Championship => Superbowl
NBA: Eastern/Western Conference Championship => NBA Finals
MLB: NLCS/ALCS => World Series

and even in college sports there are Conference Championships and National Championships

So Avery and Betts are out tonight, Drury might be out, and Backman is being replaced by Strudwick.

The Rangers are calling up Lauri Korpikoski from AHL in hopes that he might SHOOT THE PUCK WITHIN A MILE OF THE NET.

I'M LOOKING AT YOU MARTY STRAKA.

Probably pretty fucking excited since that team was a guaranteed early round choke every year despite being one of the best regular season teams in the league over the course of a decade or so.

I'm not really sure what we are arguing about here; I didn't just make up the names of the rounds. The NHL did.
