when you fight Loghain execute him yourself. DO NOT ever mention anything about sparing him or Alistair will freak out and Anora will think he's a bitch and they'll break anything off.

Question about Heavy vs Medium armor for a 2 Handed Dwarf Berserker. Does it make more sense to go Medium for the extra Stamina boost (which will increase the damage of my Berserker abilities which are based on stamina) or stay Heavy for the extra armor and eventual set bonus which dramatically reduces the stamina penalty?

^^ If you're the main tank get the heaviest armor you can find.

If you've got Alistair or Shale or someone doing the main tanking I'd go medium armor, so you can do more damage with your abilities.

Yeah the Templar as my MT. I think I'll go medium then, because currently my Heavy armor only allows me to use my Critical Strike ability once per fight. Hopefully with Medium armor I can use it twice, maybe three times per fight.

I have been playing this shit like it's my job. I haven't been so obsessed over a game in years. I do think it's funny that, 35 or so hours into a game named DRAGON AGE, I've fought a grand total of 1 dragon.

It's the Jaws effect, you spend the entire time thinking about what the shark will be like and you actually only see Jaws for like 20 minutes in the whole movie.

Good grief. There are so many choices that I wonder what would have happened if I went the other way.

And I'm ready for my mage to be powerful

Just started playing this recenty. Pretty good so far. I did experience a crash last night that wiped out 2 hours of progress. It's hard now to muster up the desire to repeat all the garbage I did in that time. Lesson learned - the game can crash and doesn't autosave hardly at all, save every 10 minutes.

So is the war dog decent? It takes up a party member slot and it seems like having a 'real' party member that has access to full equipment and more skills would be much more useful. Is the dog just a novelty tack-on?

Alistair, Morrigan, Wyne are all worth keeping, but it depends on who your main character is honestly. Everyone else is either just decent or simply in the party for lock-picking. Then again, my group is a little different than most probably.

My PC was a human warrior, so I almost never used Alistair. Instead, I had Leilana around for all lockpicking, stealing, and trap-detection needs.

My warrior is a medium armor 2 handed berserker, so I still need the templar for MT. It makes things a lot easier when you have 2 punching bags, one that can handle mages and one that can deal out more DPS than a mage.

Shale actually is pretty much the best tank in game. I got him too late to be worth anything, but the fact that he has such high stam and can be customized to pretty much take no damage against any specific opponent makes him a monster.

Also, him and Stan going on about how weak humans are is pretty hilarious though that group setup requires your PC to be someone other then a warrior. Cleave teams are cool, but get stomped by the magic bosses and dragons.

Triple mage combos can be deadly for dungeon clearing. Make sure to max out different AOE trees on all three characters, (and magic traps/CC on Wynne). Mass groups will die before they get to you. I especially like Morrigan's force field cheese.

Having to drag Leliana around for her utility was a pain in the ass until I made her specialize in ranger. Now I have a bear for a 5th party member.

I think the dog can be pretty good once you get him maxed out and get him a good collar/paint.

Plus the Mabari crunches are a hell of a lot cheaper to make or buy than health potions.

I just had a weird glitch happen on the 360 version. I got up to level 14, and didn't have any of the specializations unlocked. I happened to be right next to a merchant that was selling a tome that unlocked the specialization I was looking for so I bought it. Rather than wait until I leveled up again to be able to add that specialization, I decided to reload my last save and buy the specialization first before I leveled up. Once I reloaded and got the xp to level up again, I went to the merchant to buy the specialization, and he didn't have it. Weird, but I figured maybe that sort of thing is random, even though this game doesn't appear to work that way. I went to level up anyway, and saw that the specialization I wanted was already unlocked. And I still had all my money. So basically it was like the game "meta-saved" the fact that I bought that specialization tome, and allowed me to use it even though I loaded a save in which I didn't have it. I thought it was weird, but it saved me about 20 gold, so I'm not complaining.

^I have verified that is a repeatable bug. I just did it again with Leliana becoming a Ranger. Saved it right before I bought the tome, and then bought it, reloaded the game, and was able to make her a Ranger and keep all my cash.

It feels more cheap when I do it on purpose.

This is a glitch in the PC version too.

Also, if you unlock a specialization in one playthrough, in your next it will already be unlocked when you start the game.

Man I suck at this game. I intended for my warrior dwarf to be a tank, but they are always the first to bite it in a fight. I either drink all my potions or I just accept that they are going down each fight.

It seems like nearly every fight a character will be singled out. Everyone else will be at 95% health but the enemies always focus on one person. I guess it has to do with the armor right? The person with the most usually gets singled out?

Either way, I never know how to best assign skills, talents, attributes, etc. for a given character. I haven't gotten used to the tactics stuff yet either. I feel like I need to research this crap out for a week before I know what I'm doing, but by then it will be too late because I already wasted my skills in the wrong place. I'm conditioned that way because of other RPGs I've played where one misplaced skill here or there meant you'd be best served starting over from the beginning.

Most of my characters have leveled, some even a few times, but I haven't assigned points yet.
Warrior Dwarf (dual wield focus)
War Dog (may be useless, but the thing does stun an entire mob every once in a while)
Morrigan - would have been better if she started out as a healing mage that boosts my party's damage, but that's where I am right now. I have no idea how to best use her in a fight.
Leliana - basically my ranged character that opens locks - just so I can get worthless potions apparently

Just looking for basic tips.

I would have thought that my dwarf needed lots of strength, but I find myself needing to boost dexterity just to get the talents I want. I'd like to boost constitution, but there's no points left.

Also, the game seems a bit uneven. I get to a point where enemies keep coming in never ending waves and I barely eek through, then I go through a long stretch where they only throw 2 or 3 wimps out at a time and it's a complete cinch. No gradual increase in difficulty. Just fine one moment, absolute struggle the next, the back to simple encounters.

The problem I have is managing mobs of 10+ enemies - especially if there are two or three dogs mixed in.

In a lot of fights, at least one of your PCs will go down until you get Wynne from the circle tower quest.

If I buy this should I go with the PC version or the PS3 version? Keep in mind its the difference also between playing on a 21" monitor or a 52" LCD HDTV

PC Version. Better/more camera angles (especially useful for big battles) and user made content/mods through the already released tool set. Not to mention higher resolution, more AA, etc, etc.

Believe me, you're going to need some basic healing spells. At very least, teach Morrigan the first level healing spell and set a tactic to cast it on your folks. Personally, I use Wynne over Morrigan just so I can have access to the large number of heal and revive spells; my two tanks are more than sufficient in cleaning out the rest of them.

@ jbtilley:

As a dual wielding warrior, you're going to want to avoid getting hit in the first place. Don't bother with constitution, and wear the best medium armor you can find, so that you don't have a big fatigue penalty. Maybe put a point into willpower every couple of levels, so you can dish out more damage with your abilities.

Get rid of the dog and take Alistair, give him strength and constitution (and get him up to 26 dexterity eventually so he can get shield mastery) and the heaviest armor you can get. Make sure he has threaten and taunt so he can keep the enemy aggression on himself. Shale would also be acceptable.

Sten blows.

Especially if you're trying to use him as a main tank since he's specced for 2 handed weapons.

Oghren is a much better version of Sten, and funner also.

im rolling with my dude(dual wielding warrior), shale(main tank) leliana(archer/lockpick) and wynne(healer/mage).

So my guy does most of the damage, shale takes most of the hits, leliana does some small damage but is around mostly for my lockpicks and wynne heals while doing some side damage b/t healing spells.

i've had a FEW problems in some of the tough battles, but nothing thats made me wanna pull my hair out

Just curious (since I still haven't gotten to play this yet, due mainly to budgetary concerns), are the thieves in this game any good?

Can Thieves/Rogues/Whatever-they-decide-to-call-them be at least decent at combat or support roles in combat? Or are they not particularly useful outside of scouting, lock-picking, and general non-combat thievery? Could a thief be useful at these things if they were player-created and generally tailored to those purposes?

I'm considering making my main character one when I get this game, but I'd really only want to if they're viable options for combat or support in combat. Not much desire to make my player character the purely out-of-combat utility guy that everyone drags around just because they have to.

(For some perspective on what I'd consider "useful" in combat for a thief... the Assassin and Swashbuckler combat-oriented-thief classes in Baldur's Gate 2 were basically the perfect examples of what I'm talking about here. I'd even count the Bounty Hunter, as good combat-support, due to the increased trap-setting skill but with worse fighting ability than the previous two i mentioned.)

Yeah you can get some massive DPS going with a good rogue. But you'll have to sacrifice utility somewhat to do it.

I keep trying new people but keep going back to my best configuration, me (dual weapon warrior, complete badass), Allistair, Morrigan, and Wynne.

Most battles my dude will kill everything before the others even get warmed up. Use Morrigan's force field a lot, Wynne for healing and earthquake, and petrify if Morrigan is out of mana and cant case force field.

Try to do a Earthquake opener, followed up with Blizzard/Tempest.

Depending on where you position the effects, nobody will get to your party.
