Olney reports we just released Glavine. He was supposed to get a million dollar bonus if he made the active roster, and up to 3.5 if he stayed 90 days with us.

I like this deal for you guys. This makes your lineup a lot better. It's a HUGE upgrade from Schaefer and he is still pretty young and under control... 6/3/2009 9:33:15 PM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
Gorkys is gonna be a stud. He's young, but outside of Heyward he's the one guy in the farm system I was legitimately excited about.
McLouth and his .800 career OPS will be an OK stopgap for a year or two and definitely helps the lineup this year, but I'm not too excited about him. 6/3/2009 9:48:44 PM |

color me excited. I like the McLouth move. Morton and Locke are probably mid rotation starters at best. i think hernandez has the most talent of the three, but pitching is always so highly valued. But getting McLouth makes Hernandez expendable anyway. Even more so if Schafer gets his head back on straight.
the Glavine move doesn't really mean much to me either way. I have heard though, that Hanson will be called up to start on Saturday and take over the #5 spot in the rotation, with Medlen moving to the pen.
Also, obviously Blanco was called up yesterday, swapping with Schafer. Today, we called up Brian Barton in addition to the McLouth trade. So that means we have 7 OF: G Anderson Barton Blanco Diaz Frenchy McLouth Norton
6 OF is odd. 7 is just truly weird. I'm thinking Norton gets cut, and the front office is close to another trade, probably Frenchy. 6/3/2009 9:49:56 PM |

Francoeur is still worthless in any trade scenario. We'd never get anything other than young low-level prospects. 6/3/2009 9:54:22 PM |

Also, McLouth nearly doubles the OF's HR total (McLouth: 9, Braves OF: 10), and nearly doubles the entire team's SB total (McLouth: 7, Braves: 8)... 6/3/2009 9:58:11 PM |

Glavine had a pretty damn raw HOUR long interview on 790 The Zone down here in Atlanta today... didnt hold back much and it pretty much confirms that the Braves handled this like shit. You can listen to it on their website (you have to register, but its free).

Its a similar situation that millions of Americans face where the company opts to keep the younger guy at a fraction of the cost instead of the older veteran
It's just magnified 100 times because its happening with major sports franchise
Bad PR move by the Braves...this could hurt them for the next 30-40 years with team functions where they celebrate the past...they could have Smoltz and Maddux come back and Glavine give them the cold shoulder...If I'm Steve Avery I'd be standing by my phone 6/5/2009 11:54:36 AM |

I didn't listen to the interview, but lets not forget that Glavine is the one that went to the Mets. It's one thing to leave your team, but its an entire different story when you go to your division rival. 6/5/2009 12:02:26 PM |

the dropping him isnt the problem, its the way it was done. He went through the rehab and everything and the whole time they knew they were going to let him go and on top of that, he was willing to retire to save face for him and the franchise and they wouldnt give him the chance to do that even. 6/5/2009 12:28:08 PM |

yeah i guess so, but the braves are typically a classy organization so i have to think they had some inclination that it wouldn't play out like that 6/5/2009 12:37:33 PM |
scooterncst8 Veteran 373 Posts user info edit post |
They let him go through the rehab because they wanted to evaluate his stuff before guaranteeing him a spot. That's why they wrote into the contract that his money was contingent on making the roster. That should have been the first sign that Glavine should have recognized that his spot wasn't guaranteed, when his contract said so explicitly. 6/5/2009 1:15:09 PM |

Quote : | "RHP John Smoltz told reporters following last weekend's minor league rehab start that he'd prefer not to make his first Red Sox start against the Atlanta Braves. The 42-year-old right-hander still has one more minor league rehab appearance next week and appears to be earmarked for a June 16 return against the Florida Marlins -- a development that he'd prefer before potentially starting against his former team on June 21. "There is so much history and emotion that goes into it, but it's a game and I want to pitch the game (against Atlanta). My only wish is that it wouldn't be my first game," said Smoltz to WEEI.com. "Pitching is pitching and when I get out there it will be pitching. But there will also be too much leading into it and too much after it. It will not be normal... You try and treat it like a normal game, but this one would not be a normal game. No matter how much I would want to sleep at night, there would be anxious moments." |

In 2008, Francoeur finished 204th out of 213 players (with at least 400 plate appearances) in OPS.
Thus far in 2009, he's 204th out of 220 qualified players in OPS.
At least he's consistent.

If you offer that shirt to the Braves, they might just give you Jeff Francoeur in return. Probably a fair trade...6/10/2009 9:03:08 PM |

Francouer is batting .240.

No fucking offense ever. This team could be really good if they had even an average OF squad in terms of hitting. I wish we would have made more of an effort for Abreu in the offseason. We could use his 400 OBP.
The Francoeur experiment should just end. Let someone else play please. Blanco, McLouth, and Diaz. Hell we called up some guy named Barbaro today to play 1B.

I dont know how you can do anything btw now n the trade deadline that will change the outcome of this season. The braves have been in this "funk" for several years now. Its gonna take 3-4-5 things to bring us back to being a winner, including things happening to the Mets, Phils, & Marlins. Aside from that, it hurts me to say, we may be average for awhile. 6/14/2009 7:43:57 PM |

My post from the first page of this thread. Our hitting is so amazingly bad that it is painful to watch. Teams that do not hit HRs need guys with .380+ on base %s, not this shitty .320-.340% type guys scattered through our lineup.
