and it was goddamn awesome.
probably one of the best FPS singleplayer campaigns I've played. if you're someone that was rolling your eyes though at CoD4's singleplayer, it might not be for you. 11/1/2009 2:35:45 PM |

^^Honestly I doubt it would make much of a difference if it was a game of good players on 360 vs good players on PC (though bad people would probably be a bit better on PC). It's so easy to shoot in the game that someone on either system should basically be hitting every one of their shots anyway (excepting recoil and the inaccuracy inherent in some guns, of course).
The hardware difference really only helps to make terrible players a bit closer to mediocre/average... so much of the skill curve in Modern Warfare is based on mobility and being in the right place on the map at the right time, and even the technical skill is more focused on reaction time and reflex than ability to aim, anyway.
If it were something like Halo (or really any non-realistic shooter where it takes MUCH longer to kill targets and there is no "aim down the sights" feature, meaning one must keep their reticle on a more quickly-moving enemy for an extended period) then the disparity between PC and console players would be a lot greater... but with MW/MW2, you don't have to stay hitting them for more than a second or two because of the speed with which they die, and they won't be able to move around as much while you do it. It makes the combat orient itself more towards reflex/reaction time than maintaining accurate shooting, and the gameplay as a whole orients itself towards being able to move quickly around the map and position yourself in the right places (that is, flanking the enemy team). Though it's just so incredibly easy to hit people in MW anyway that I can hardly see why the discussion arises.
On the other hand, I don't know of (and have never heard of) anyone who is bad enough at Modern Warfare to straight-up miss most of their shots in combat on PC or console, so maybe my impression of this is a bit skewed. I assume there have to be some people like this, though, given the sheer number of people that tend to go very negative for multiple games... unless they just aren't thinking quickly and stand around or camp bad spots all the time (which is entirely possible). 11/2/2009 6:13:46 PM |

I suck ass at MW, although I'd say that is mostly caused by lag issues I always have. I think that is mainly due to the shitty host matching done on the PS3. I'm a top 5% player at Killzone 2, which I think is partly because the game doesn't cater to campers like COD4 does and that matches my playing style. Killzone also doesn't have lag issues like COD does, even when playing international matches. The only time I really play video games is when I'm doing cardio on the treadmill, so a game that encourages people to move around and make strategic advances fits me much better than a twitch shooter that caters to snipers.
I'm somewhat dreading the switch back to a twitch shooter when MW2 comes out, but I know I will want to because I only enjoy online play and there are going to be a ton of people to play against. 11/2/2009 10:57:27 PM |

some maps cater more to campers & snipers, but then some are more about SMG style warfare. I hope they put more speedball style maps (like dome from WaW) in MW2, because it gives a nice break from larger maps which involve more long range attack styles. 11/2/2009 11:17:38 PM |

Camping is, in fact, the exact opposite of what a good player should be doing in COD4. Even with the sniper, it's generally a mistake to stay in one spot for very long, especially if you've already killed someone from there.
If your playstyle is to move around the map quickly and essentially run-and-gun, then MW1 is probably the best modern game you could possibly play. It absolutely does not encourage camping, and typically the people camping are only doing so in an attempt to make up for having a poor reaction time or inexplicably bad aim. Camping with a sniper can be okay situationally (ex: when you have two claymores to plant nearby and you can see most of the map by moving around your position... and there really aren't that many spots like this thanks to good level design), but in general you'll get more kills and live longer by moving around a lot.

some people say they can't afford a gaming rig, but in reality you can build a computer than can play just about anything for around $400. If you can't save up $400 then you probably shouldn't have a $250 console either.
personally i think all that kind of shit should be banned from online play, just like auto triggers are supposed to be banned.

it's not hard at all to play newer games on older computers as long as you tone down the graphics. I'm using a laptop from 2005 that can play pretty much anything I want as long as I don't go balls out with the graphics. To be fair, I haven't really bought a newer PC game in quite some time, but I can still play Half Life 2 and Age of Empires 3 flawlessly. 11/3/2009 1:52:05 AM |

Well encourage or not people camp all the fucking time.
I play Hardcore Headquarters most of the time and there is always one motherfucker that is nowhere near the point and running away from it and takes out the other team from behind or just camps near the point without trying to take it. The problem is everyone jerks off to their K/D ratio when many times it doesn't really show how good a player is.11/3/2009 2:28:30 AM |

^Hardcore is like an entirely different game, and the playstyle is not similar at all. Someone clipping you in the big toe while you're running around can get you killed, so it actually does naturally lead to campy gameplay. As such, I do not play it and never bother discussing it when talking about the game as a whole, since it is not the default gameplay mode and there are a ton of other options available if you don't like the camping and general shittiness of hardcore.

i think consoles are generally just more convenient for most people. if you spend $400 on a new console at the beginning of its lifespan you know it's gonna be good for at least 5-6 more years without having to potentially upgrade components in it. and you also know that you will be able to enjoy improved graphics in games over the course of its lifespan while you may end up having to tone down the graphics to run a game on an aging PC.11/3/2009 3:51:21 AM |

I can use the controller just fine while on the treadmill. Hell, I beat most of Tiger Wood 09 completely on the treadmill, and that game was rather sensitive with the swing. On COD4, I would usually win a one-on-one matchup at medium range unless I'm lagging. The only thing I can't do on the treadmill is use the motion sensitive controls for the sniper rifle in Killzone 2, because I'm not able to hold the controller perfectly level. I also don't wear a headset because I sweat a lot, so I can't give vocal help to teammates. I don't run on the treadmill while playing; I put it at 3.5mph and a 5-6% incline and go for an hour or more. Sometimes I do interval sprints in between rounds.
Quote : | "Even with the sniper, it's generally a mistake to stay in one spot for very long, especially if you've already killed someone from there. " |
If you sit in one spot, shoot somebody, run to another hiding spot, shoot someone, and repeat - you are camping. If you trying to suggest that COD4 doesn't cater to this style of play, you are crazy in your fucking head. Everyone gets judged by the K/D ratio, and the K/D ratio on every map except for the ship and the shipyard will be dominated by campers. The game doesn't give enough points for completing the strategic parts of missions to encourage you not to snipe. At least Killzone awards you with tons of points for strategic play and only gives you a handful of bullets for the sniper rifle, so the gameplay lends itself to run and gunners that are strategically taking over certain portions of the map.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitching about snipers and campers because I know I can do the exact same thing myself. The people who camp are only doing what the game rewards them for. Unfortunately, camping is boring as shit to me, and the main reason I play video games when I'm doing cardio is because cardio bores the shit out of me and I want something interactive to take my mind off of it. Unfortunately, COD4 seems to be what all games are judged by nowadays, and the moment they put out MW2 everyone is going to abandon Killzone and flock back to a twitch shooter. As much as I like Killzone, I like having numerous people to play against more.11/3/2009 9:03:53 AM |

You should get partial points for objectives. Like if you get killed while capturing a HQ or flag you should get like 10 or 15 points if you get killed before you get it. It would encourage people to actually play by the rules of the gametype (CTF, HQ).
I hate people who get into these games and start shit talking when they go 30k/7d but never attempt any objectives. Go play death match if you are worried about kd+/-.11/3/2009 11:35:34 AM |

A few good reasons come to mind in my particular case. None of my friends have gaming-worthy PC's, so they all play on the 360. Also, I'd consider Xbox Live to be a much more convenient and consistent online play experience than any other I've ever had. Whereas I've spent several hundred dollars repeatedly upgrading my PC, I haven't had to spend anything to upgrade my 360. The XIM device also allows me to use my custom-built arcade fighting joysticks and other PC input devices such as HOTAS sticks with just about any game I've wanted to build a configuration for. (I think X-Arcade only finally put out an adapter for the 360 this past week, but I've been using mine ever since I built my first XIM.) Additionally, the library of games is often very different across systems. To the best of my knowledge, Gears of War 2 hasn't been released on PC. I can also get an online multiplayer game of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 going on my 360, but not so on my PC.11/3/2009 12:39:35 PM |

i disagree. Whenever i play HQ, i always go for the HQ. if its cleared out and i capture it, i get 20 points right there (40 if its double xp weekend). its easy to do if you know how to hide in corners while capturing it, and your team isnt full of complete failures. also, defending the HQ (getting kills inside the area) nets you extra points. Laughable, and the fact that you say this just shows that you haven't seen enough evidence to the contrary.
If you're a good player in a game full of randoms, the K/D ratio will be dominated by you, with an MP5 and Extreme Conditioning on. First one to get to the enemies = first one to get all the kills.
Quote : | "If you sit in one spot, shoot somebody, run to another hiding spot, shoot someone, and repeat - you are camping. If you trying to suggest that COD4 doesn't cater to this style of play, you are crazy in your fucking head." |
No... no you're not. And no, no it doesn't. That's not what camping is, and you can't get nearly as many kills by doing it anyway. With this playstyle, you're NOT going to be getting as many kills as you could playing as a high-mobility class. You simply can't, because you won't see as many enemies as you would by running from place to place (unless the entire enemy team repeatedly decides to stand around in your field of view for a long time).
Sure, you'll die a little bit less as a sniper, but really that shouldn't matter in the least unless you jack off to your K/D ratio. Personally I'd rather go 30+/5 or even 30+/10 than 20/2, even though technically it is a "worse" ratio. You say you like to have fun, and you say that run-and-gun is fun for you... again, COD4 is quite possibly the best game you could be playing. If you really do play to have fun, then stop sweating your K/D and just run around killing everyone on the map. There are SO MANY bad players online that it's really not that fucking hard.
Quote : | "the K/D ratio on every map except for the ship and the shipyard will be dominated by campers. The game doesn't give enough points for completing the strategic parts of missions to encourage you not to snipe." |
You know they made this one gametype called "Team Deathmatch", right? The one where you're supposed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible?
Besides that, the biggest K/D campers on games like headquarters typically aren't sniping, they're using M16s, LMGs, or other decently accurate fast-rate-of-fire guns, and they're sitting somewhere in the periphery that they can see the capture point and shoot down all the lemmings who just run straight at it. That's not the game catering to campers, that's idiotic players letting themselves be killed by slightly-less-idiotic players. You know the campers are going to be there and are probably watching nothing but the point, so skirt the surrounding area and get the kills, then take the point/let your team take the point.
Also, if you're playing hardcore, just ignore this entire thing and realize that your complaints are entirely your own fault. Hardcore is a different game all together, and if you want to fix most of these problems, just stop playing it and go to core.

My favorite game mode is headquarters. you get a shit ton of XP and its more than a spray and pray game type. I only play it on hardcore because I think the hardcore game mechanics are a hell of a lot better. I don't have to empty an entire clip into a guys face just to hopefully kill him if i don't have the stopping power perk and he doesn't have juggernaut.
I'm also THAT guy that runs around killing my teammates that don't actively participate in getting capture points and just sit in the same spot the entire game sniping. 11/3/2009 6:36:31 PM |

^^that's the biggest pile of shit I've ever read on this entire site, soap box included. I'm also inclined that you wrote that whole piece just so you could claim that your K/D ratio is typically 6:1 and that it's not a big deal. If you think COD4 is a great run-and-gun game, you need to buy some other FPS and experience just how much fun a REAL run-and-gun game is.

^My K/D ratio isn't normally that good, those are good-case scenarios. Annoying shit can and does happen to prevent those sorts of numbers (my own airstrike coming in from a weird direction and hitting me? awesome). "Annoying shit" does not typically include campers, though, and when it does, they die quickly to me calling out their location to my teammates or just me killing them after I respawn. To be fair, though, I do usually play online with competent teammates, not random teammates, so that does tend to shave the death count down. Though in TDM it also shaves the kill count down, too... there's only so many kills to go around.
That's not even what matters, though. The point is that a camping sniper of X skill level just WON'T and CANNOT do as well as a run-and-gun player of X skill level (except in outlandish what-if scenerios that virtually never happen in-game... and judging by kills/usefulness here, not raw K/D... again, I'd rather anyone go 30+/10 than 20/2... you can't flat out say that the game "encourages" K/D whoring, either, because you don't lose exp points by dieing... again, if you like to jack off to your own K/D ratio, then yes, it does encourage K/D whoring, but if you like to play to be useful, have fun, and slaughter more enemies, then it absolutely does not), and if you think anything to the contrary then I have a handful of friends that I would like you to meet that you probably never will actually meet. Seriously, you are unequivocally wrong, and chances are the only way you'll accept that is if I give you the XBL gamertags of a bunch of my friends who would likely rather not let you have their gamertags (I'd gladly give you my own, but unfortunately I just started a Gold account and don't actually have a copy of the game right now). Just accept that you don't have a shit's worth of a clue about what you're trying to argue about, and move on.
If you think COD4 isn't a great run-and-gun game, you need to learn to play it better and experience just how much fun a REAL run-and-gun game is.
