Anyone who has any clue about football knows that its probably the most coach-intensive sport thats out there. Thats a large reason why its on a weekly schedule so that the coaches can review tape, develop strategies, and implement schemes and formation.

Right now, our defense is horrible and from what I've seen, we haven't made hardly any changes in our approach. Either that, or the players just suck.

T O B at least had consecutive winning seasons somewhere.

Sidney Lowe's definition of greatness is managing to break a .45 winning average.

TOB has said from the beginning this year that we aren't a good football team... and if you add to that the injuries that we have incurred, it has been almost impossible to get better as the year goes on. we just need some damn depth

this is just wrong. before the season started he was actually pretty high on the team, more so than the previous two years. he actually harped on the secondary on several occasions- talking about how talented they, that they just need experience. he said that the absolute lowest expectation for the program from this point forward is to go to a bowl game.

selfpwnt on all accounts.

wait wat? losing by 21 points to duke isn't a blowout?

^ I guess Duke was close to a blowout...but really if you look back we were only down by 7 going into the 4th. The end score in my mind was more a result of panic setting in during the 4th (we gift wrapped at least one of those touchdowns for them).

I'm not saying we are a great team by any means, but they have managed to keep most games competitive.

Being blown out is debatable. It was still a game in the 4th quarter. And you can't hang all 49 points on the defense.

Of course the offense didn't score in the 2nd half.

Umm the current coaching staff only recruited half of the current players. The current secondary mess (THE REASON WE SUCK ASS) is all O'Brien recruits (Fr, R-Fr, R-SOPH + Clem Johnson JC) so how could the previous staff not be to blame for not recruiting at secondary?

the current staff is to blame for being dumbasses and not realizing there was a problem there when they arrived. it took them until the true freshman class this year to finally bring in a ton of DBs when they really needed to start loading up on the position as soon as they arrived. also, they werent recruiting ANY CBs for this class, showing that they were clueless and not aware of how big a problem they have

you could argue that the LB problem is just as bad as the secondary.

maddox, manning, cole all should be not even sniffing the field except for certain situations. irving being hurt and michel being banged up have obviously hurt the LB core as well.

^^are you fucking stupid?

These guys were here and capable of playing when the staff came that aren't here any longer:

Javon Walker
Jimmaul Simmons
Dajuan Morgan(i include him because he left a year early....he was good, but noone expected it)
Dominique Ellis

They also recruited Akeem Cunningham who left this year.

As a matter of a fact.......in their first full recruiting class, they brought in 3 CB's. CJ Wilson, Cunningham and Gary Grant. In this past years recruiting class, they brought in 3 CB's in Byrd, Smith and Dean Haynes.

What more would you have liked for them to do with the CB situation?

Posting about whether losses are blowouts or not is ridiculous and irrelevant. I don't want moral victories--I want wins, and I think everybody else does, too.

If it ain't in the win column, it's a loss--period--get it through your head. Anything else is just bullshit.

We know that we'll lose most if not all of our division 1 games with Archer at the defensive helm. What's the evil we don't know that is preventing us from looking for a new defensive coordinator? Losing most if not all of our games against division 2 opponents?

We are young in the secondary and at linebacker. 9 of the 14 players in the 2 deep for the FSU game are Fr or So. So it only makes sense that we would give up tons of points. They are sticking with the current scheme betting that they'll be better in the future after the same guys have been in the system for a few years.

Would we be better by switching systems? Doubtful. The same guys that can't cover and are missing tackles in a zone scheme would get toasted playing man. Hopefully they'll improve over time. I think we're just bad defensively this year even before the injuries.

Bottom line - TOB approves of the defensive schemes that Archer has implemented. And I don't think either are going anywhere any time soon.

you guys seriously need to take a step back... O'Brien has done a pretty good job over his three years here. I'd give him a B overall.

We will get better over this season and should take a step forward again next season.

Amato left the cupboard completely bare.

We are playing young guys and being competitive. We are heading in the right direction.

Now, we just need to beat UMD and UNC and I'll consider it a building season.

this is amazing coming from rallydurham

Like others have said, we got our hopes up a little too high with the run we had to finish last year. We havent lived up to that hype, so everyone and their brother is pissed as fuck.

In two years is when we have to look and see what our team is like. Thats when the first couple of recruited classes will make up the majority of our team. We still have people from Amato's classes at important positions playing.

But at the same time, I would like to get Charlie Strong the d-coordinator from Florida as our head coach.

actually it was nine win seasons; something we would all have killed for 3 years ago when he was hired

did he win a championship? no. is that a small blemish? maybe, maybe not considering he was at BC (not to mention the teams he built made the champ. game the next 2 years. a lot of that has to be credited to him)

everyone thought that with the recruiting restrictions at BC he would do even better here (greater than 9 win seasons).

it is only year 3. has this been discouraging? absolutely. lets give him a couple more years and see where it goes. we have a supposedly great qb waiting behind wilson and quite a bit of young recruited defensive talent as well as great recruited oline talent.

^ agreed. Not to mention we have been in really every game this season we have lost. Just a couple of plays here and there and we would be on top of the ACC. It's a good learning experience for the players for next year.

i agree that TOB has quite a bit going against him atm. i'm not ready to curse his name yet. we've been very very close in a lot of games, but to say we've been competitive in every game this season isn't true.

i'm not worried, Mack Brown had back to back 1-10 seasons and we kicked his ass and in 2 years he had them finish in the top10 and out-recruited us. Not saying TOB WILL do that, but i think sticking with a system and letting everything sort itself out over a couple years is necessary.

One thing ive been pretty impressed with is the offensive pass-protection and run-blocking the last few games. RW has all day to throw.

Looks like Jarvis Byrd is going to be good, too bad Rashard Smith and the rest of the first-team is out for the year.

it's obvious that TOB CAN do a lot with a little. I just hope that our fanbase will give him a couple more years before everyone tries to run him out of town. I mean Bobby Bowden had 2 losing seasons before they went on to 30+ years of winning seasons. That wont happen here but the point is our fanbase is quick to push a coach out before their peak (it would seem). or at least we are quick to push a coach out regardless

No way he is out the door, but he is making basic coaching mistakes you wouldn't expect a coach with his background and experience to make. I wonder if part of the problem is he is distracted trying to address all of the other issues the team has that he forgets about things like clock management. Watching Saturday's game makes me wonder if our team even practices 2-minute offense...

TOB is still credible. It's the defensive coordinator that is not. I don't think anyone can judge what TOB's position is with regards to Archer. I don't think TOB is the kind of guy that would attempt to bring on a new defensive coordinator mid-season and it's not like he'd come out in a mid-season press conference and say that one of his coaches is gone if there isn't a major turn around. I will say that some of his recent quotes defending the coaching staff while throwing the players under the bus weren't that inspiring. The end of the season will tell.

Yes the defense cupboard is bare, etc. It's unfair to compare but I would have thought that Duke was in a situation where they haven't had anything in their cupboard for over a decade. They sure can pull it together a lot quicker than we can apparently.

And all the injuries we suffer... is it just a string of unusually terrible luck or is their something wrong with our strength and conditioning that is making the players more prone to injury?

well, i'm not making for excuses, but the duke game was much closer than the score indicated. It was tied at half-time, and we were down one touchdown going into the fourth. both of their 4th-quarter touchdowns came on fumbled kick-returns (one recovered in the red zone, i think, and one was recovered in the end-zone). if we'd held onto the ball on both of those and given our offense a chance to get the ball, the outcome could have been different. again, i ain't making excuses, just saying.

^^ It is an amazing string of terrible luck. We WILL be due though, our time will come. I just hate being the A-typical pack fan and saying that, but it is true.

If our players were injured and then came back and re-injured the same previous injury then I would be concerned.

However I do like the idea of every linmen wearing knee braces on both knees as a preventative measure. I see it done with alot of other schools. But I do see a problem that the knee could be weakened by it.
