The same trustee, Steve Warren, later e-mailed Fowler to say how "truly sorry" he was at how things worked out for Fowler. Woodson said Friday that although the decision to have Fowler step down was made before Woodson's arrival, as the new chancellor he had to determine whether the decision should be reversed. Although Woodson said Fowler had supporters, he said the tide of public opinion made it difficult for Fowler to continue in his job. "As a leader, you always have to assess whether the people that report to you are in a position to be successful," Woodson said. "Can they lead the organization that they have been charged to lead? And I think it had become clear to both Jim Woodward and me that that had become a difficult environment for Lee Fowler." Fowler served as athletic director for 10 years, spearheading a $120 million effort that substantially upgraded N.C. State's facilities and overseeing a program that has avoided running afoul of the NCAA. But many fans have become restless as the football team has suffered through four straight losing seasons and the basketball team has missed the NCAA tournament four straight times. The frustration of fans who want more wins from Wolfpack teams is obvious from their communications with university officials. That frustration became clear late in former basketball coach Herb Sendek's tenure as he became increasingly unpopular before leaving for Arizona State in 2006. Kellie Harper already understands the fans' fervor after one season as N.C. State's women's basketball coach. Harper, who is on the committee searching for Fowler's replacement, told committee members May 17 that the new athletic director will need to be aware of how passionate N.C. State fans are and turn that energy into a positive even as new technology makes it easier for critics to complain. "It's important [for the new AD] to know that we're operating with a different group [of fans]," Harper said."

Not much makes sense about that article. If Woodward put the plan in motion to oust Fowler in March - then why would any emails sent to Woodson after all of that happened make a difference? I also think the 29 people who emailed pale in comparison to the number that likely said something to him in a person at the welcoming events.

I emailed Dr. Woodward back in October and he actually replied to my message. Here was my email and his response:

" Dr. Woodward, I expect that this email will not be read as I understand how busy you are. I just did not know who else to send my thoughts to regarding our unversity. I used to be a member of the Alumni Association and the Wolfpack Club, but I quit both after watching the year-in, year-out failure of our sports teams and "leadership" of Lee Fowler. Yes sports are not that important in the grand scheme of things, but sports are the face of the university. It is of no coincidence that the University of Florida's rise to prominence nationally in terms of university rankings and popularity corresponds to their success in basketball and football. I have considered rejoining the Alumni Association in the past few years, but have always decided against doing so because I cannot support a university that continues to employ someone like Lee Fowler. He has done NOTHING to improve the athletic standing of NC State. We are no better now at any significant sport than when he took over. Facility improvements do not matter when our teams stink. His record speaks for itself and I will not join the Alumni Association or give any money to general funds until he is fired. If nothing else, I hope this will be the one move you will make while you are chancellor. There must be a conspiracy within the UNC Board to keep him around. Clearly they enjoy seeing NC State's futility in all things athletic."

^^ I think that was actually a cut and paste error. In my original email it was spelled correctly, but I had to do some reformatting when I pasted into TWW so I think I cut out the "i" somehow.

i never understood that defense of fowler. facilities are upgraded as the times dictate, not because of one person.

UVA and UMD have new basketball stadiums, and about half the ACC football stadiums have undergone major expansion recently, and all schools but one did so without Lee Fowler on the payroll.

In addition to all the Carter-Finley stuff, we built new a new track, softball field, baseball field, tennis facility, golf course, upgraded women's bball/gymnastics/volleyball in Reynold's, and a new soccer field, and maybe something else I'm forgetting. And this was at NC State, and we fell on the lower end of the revenue/financial end of the ACC.

I'm not saying it was enough of a defense of Fowler, or that is was all his doing , but it was something that was valid as a defense of his time as AD.
