the only time i'm ok with ice is if there is an ice base covered by snow. then i can use the sled with the runners on the bottom. otherwise you need a LOT of snow that has been packed down for it to work well and not just sink to the concrete. like during the last snow, if the coverage on the roads was a little more comprehensive, after like a day or so of cars driving on it, it got packed down and icy. but it wasn't exactly enough snow so there were uncovered spots which clearly doesn't work out for sledding.
and the sled with the runners is the best sled for sledding purposes. way better than a saucer or a toboggan which seem to be the only things that are ever useful around here
SOMETIMES if you get enough snow you can go down the hills on a saucer first to pack all the snow down and then try the good sled. but there still needs to be a lot of snow and a little ice definitely helps.

this is true, but the danger level goes up quite a bit with them
There is a hill by the Wells College student union in upstate NY that I used to go sledding down all the time, and at the very bottom of the hill is a building. With those old school flexible flyer sleds, we had to be extremely careful not to slam into the building since they seem to go on forever if the conditions are right.1/9/2011 9:23:50 PM |

^^ oh my god that is the sled i have!!! they seriously FLY. when we were little we'd do triple deckers on them, dad, me, then my brother. my brother and i ALWAYS flew off at high speeds.
its funny when you're having that much fun though you don't notice how much shit hurts until way later when you look at all the bruises haha.
i watched a home video recently, i need to put it on here it is retarded, of me trying to sled down our driveway when i'm like 8-10 on the flyer sled and turn out of our drive way and then sled down the street. my dad is at the bottom recording and keeps telling me to turn harder but every time i don't turn hard enough and hit the side of the ditch across the street and fly off the sled. i do it like 10 times. then i think my dad gave up on me. lol.
i typically do stomach down and steer with my hands on those. then you fly face first into whatever you're going towards haha. sometimes you can sit up and hold the string to steer but i think that is for pussies

That is definitely true. I had some rough days on that hill (it has to be at least a tenth of a mile long, and it's steep enough to get you going FAST)
The string is worthless, really. Use your hands face first if you're by yourself, use your feet sitting up if there are other passengers.

hahaha. its so fun though!! until you smash into something or realize you're going to and have to do a kamikaze dive off of it at high speeds

it isn't even supposed to start until after 12pm tomorrow, right. or that is when the like 50% chance begins. so...looks like tuesday. i already had tuesday off. RATS
but if it looks like it actually might do anything sled worthy, i'm going to force tschudi to sleep over here so i'll have a sledding buddy
but its just going to be sleet so i need to stop getting my hopes up
OR i had better sleep there and bring my sled that way if something major DID happen and we could sled and a bar was open, we would be within sledding distance

wral has turned around and update their "hourly graphic" chart snow starting at 8am and ending at 5pm. no 35 degrees on that chart either. but, after 5 the mix bag comes in. if you click on the more info on that chart you'll see1-3 in. and in the mix area you'll see 2-4 in. abc is revising their accums too from barely 1 to like 1-2in. nbc says 1-3. huffman says 1-4. 1/9/2011 10:43:40 PM |

NCSU might cancel Monday (first day of the Spring semester) last minute. Currently I was guessing they're roll out a cancel for afternoon classes around 6AM or something. 1/9/2011 11:00:04 PM |

little accumulation
and 50+ chance after 1pm
the morning still says like 20 percent chance. that ain't no thing. 1/9/2011 11:10:50 PM |

go to wral's weather page and look at the graphic that list weather by the hour. if you click on various things on the graphic is says 1-3 then another sayd 2-4.... so not what he said on air in his little snippet. 1/9/2011 11:12:18 PM |

that chart is really cool...i don't have much faith in wral's snow forecasts though. they always disappoint.
i think i'll bring boots with me to work tomorrow. i think i'm getting sick & it'd be nice to have a day off on tuesday or something. 1/9/2011 11:13:01 PM |
