^ I think a shot has to hit the post or be stopped by the goalie (or go in). Scoring chance can just be an attempt at putting it on goal.

I have no idea how they calculate that. It's very subjective I would imagine. For example, a shot from center ice on goal would officially be a shot, but by no means should it be considered a scoring chance (unless Vesa Toskala is in goal).

if it hits the post it's not a shot

a scoring chance is a situation in which you have a reasonably high percentage chance of scoring a goal

a shot from the point that hits the goalie in the crest and is held is not a scoring chance

a two-on-none with no shot on goal is still a scoring chance
