saw it saturday night in IMAX at concord mills, awesome movie

as far as aging years (mentally) in limbo, this was a concept that Stephen King touched on in his short story The Jaunt.

I didn't think it was nearly as complicated as that made it out to be. Most things were pretty well explained while they are happening, the rest by the end of the movie.

What's that crap about the flight attendant? How the hell is she supposed to know if things are going bad?

That's a big part of the joke. Well, how it was explained anyhow. -- the "golden rule" is show, don't tell. There's a helluva lot of "tell" in inception. They just mask it by having everything explained to Ellen Page, who happens to be "new"... much like the audience.

I didn't think it was very complicated as far as following the story. But there is a lot going on, and a lot that's not clearly explained. And the skit pretty much takes stuff straight out of the movie, it's not like they really added anything that wasn't there.

that skit hits on a few things -
1)there's quite a bit of exposition in the movie
2) there's exposition to explain that earlier exposition doesn't apply to situation X because of reason A.
3) how exactly does Eames "shape-shift?" - I think i have an idea. but for all the "explaining" there is, they might as well have just explained that as well.
4) how come Cobb's sub-conscious is so present and nobody else's is even present in the most minor way? We're talking a train coming out of nowhere and a "person" shooting people to interrupt the plan.
5) Why the hell did Nolan have Christian Bale do that dumb ass voice for batman. We get that he wants to disguise his voice... but really?

and so on, they're all reasonable. at the end of the day, none of those are really THAT important though. And some things are just necessary to create drama. The movie is great entertainment, it's not flawless. you let it slide and enjoy the film.

Just let it slide and enjoy the 2 and half minute comedy skit.

actually i thought this was explained pretty easily, he became convinced in his mind that they were torturing the other guy (who worked for his dad) and so his projection became so that it was able to mimic him entirely

he spent SO much time in his own mind (his or his wife's) that he now has a hard time keeping her out, it'd be like if you thought about something for 50 years straight 365 days in a row and then tried never thinking about it again, its hard i imagine

^^Juno was an architect because she was good at building and manipulating landscapes, buldings, etc. Although they explain why it can be done, they never say how it is actually done.

Likewise, Eames is a forger, and his special skill is to forge the appearance of another. It doesn't matter how he does it, he just does.

Think of him as an architect of people, but can only do it to himself

Yeah they never explain how the architect builds stuff. Maybe they do it in AutoCAD and upload it to the machine

lol, i too, did not find this stuff hard to piece together/explain to myself. Doesn't mean there's not A LOT of shit going on in the movie. and there's a little validity to a skit that was exaggerated some for a laugh.

The only reason i posted what i did was because i've heard a few people "defend" the movie against such things. I loved the movie, and completely understood everything about it. but, i got a good laugh out of the skit because there is an element of truth in it. Particularly in how much of it is them explaining things. Is it a bit over the top in how convoluted it presents things, sure.

that + he had studied him in real life and was probably mimicking the way he moved, talked, etc. to help sell it.

ehh, i didn't see anyone's mom or dad showing up. Their dead brother/sister, etc. I mean, i get what you're saying. But everyone probably has something heavy in their life and it's not coming up at all (not in the least bit), while his is coming in the form of a train traveling down a street (with no tracks) and spite killings. It's not an entirely invalid point for the sake of a laugh. I can buy that his is maybe ten folds what everyone else's is. But there was nothing else whatsoever. --- again, it doesn't bother me in the least bit. but it's true enough to make a joke about it.

just saw this. fun movie. highly entertaining. a few internal inconsistencies, but so what

during the climax, when shit was flying around, the girl was hanging on screaming, everything was blowing up and falling apart, the dramatic score was building to a crescendo... i had a spontaneous urge to holler "AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!"

because, it just doesn't matter about our economy in the tank, the Gulf leaking oil everywhere, no jobs, manufacturing base being moved to Asia..... there ain't NOBODY that can make a movie like Hollywood. You can go see silly indians singing and dancing around in some Bollywood bullshit, or snooty French art films, but it takes a bunch of Americans to make a kickass special effects film that just blows shit up in a clever trippy way with a heavy musical score.

of course, i resisted, because everyone would have just thought i had Tourette's.

Bump for the DVD release.

Finally saw it. It was pretty good. I only had two lingering issues.

I kinda felt like showing the top during the last scene was unnecessary. You should already have a doubt as to whether or not the ending was real or a dream even without the top, so why include it? Maybe for the two people out there that never made the connection. Why not just let those two people walk away from the movie thinking they saw their happy ending? I guess they just wanted to show that slight bobble to the spin. And if Leo isn't going to wait to see the results of the spin why not just have him break out the top, then put it down without spinning it - I guess that does sound like a weaker ending after having typed that out.

The other was the timing of the levels. During the van chase with the bullets firing I found myself wondering... wouldn't the van only have made it about 2 blocks while they did all that setup in the next level down? That notion was further put to the test at the end of the move when the timing of the levels transitioned to what I had originally expected. So:

Beginning of the movie: The van level seemed to have 1:1 timing with the Mr. Charles level. All they did was go to a hotel room and the van had driven who knows how far - certainly farther than a few blocks.
End of the movie: The van level seemed to have the correct timings... with respect to the Mr. Charles level at least. That guy had loads of time to rearrange the kick using the elevator all in the time it took for the van to hit the water.

Really good though.

\/ When I get some more time I'll have to do that.

not being a dick, it's just that there is tons of good discussion in these short 10 pages and you'll get a much better idea/answer than you would expecting us to rehash a film we haven't seen (yet) in 5 months

I picked up a copy at Target last night. The clerk was a young girl who asked if it was any good, as I was the third person she had sold a copy to.

I asked if she had seen it. She said no and asked me what it was about.

I told her that I had no idea how to give her a brief synopsis of the film.

I think that the whole thing is a dream. I mean his kids are in the same damn outfits at the ending as they are in all of his memories of them.

During Mal's suicide, she is on the other side of the building. WTF?

It's a thriller movie that is full of badass characters (arthur, eames, saito) and a damn good cast.

Also, I love the coffee shop scene where he draws the classic sketch of snakes feeding of each other to explain how creativity and productivity feed of each other in an endless cycle.

One thing that I don't see addressed that much is how there is a strong connection to Mal and Cobb's dream ride to couples that do heroin togeather. Actually, eveytime the go into a dream it reminds me of people doing heroin.

Ariadne comes back because "there is nothing quite like it" and she can't stop thinking about it. Is this some of Nolan's personal experience with heroin seeping in?
