Nice of him to point out that the call was right before expressing any concern about the injured player.

Yeah we were on the bubble before the tourney began but we definitely played our way off the bubble beating 2 ranked teams in 3 days.

Sucks that we lost when we had a lead relatively late in the game, but this team is pretty young and we should have another shot again next year. We lose Kyle Wilson and the Poulks, but most every other major contributor is back. Hopefully we're stocking up on good pitching recruits, because we could've been a top 20 team easy with just mediocre pitching.

Wonder where we end up in the regionals. We should definitely be in though after the good showing we had in the tournament.

Some pics from the game:

http://picasaweb.google.com/slricks/ACCChampionship

Sat next to the players families section and they were mad as fire when the catcher got bowled over. Umpires were certainly not on our side today. Was the Wilson grab in left field legit? Looked from our angle like we got screwed on that one, although I dont think it cost us any runs.

NC State shit is still in effect

The hit was legal and Wilson fielded that ball on the one-hop. The umps were fine, we just lost it ourselves.

I didn't see the hit that Schaff took, but if the FSU player was trying to slide into home it was legal. If he ran full steam into the catcher, that is illegal. In college ball, you have to attempt to slide or jump over the catcher, like the top play from sometime this season. Two years ago, Tommy Fouschi railroaded the GT catcher and was ejected b/c he didn't attempt to slide.

from what i saw live, that play was total BS... he "went out of his way" and lowered his shoulder.... shoulda been out.... I dont think we would come back after that anyways, would been down only 2 but it would have been more possible than being down 5... I lost some respect for fsu today
I also lost whatever respect I had left for acc refs today.... is that even possible?

I lost respect for FSU two years ago when I went to our series there before the ACC Tourney in Jax. The best part was them yelling at their own fans during the game. Also I hope no one has to sit through a FSU-Clemson baseball. It turns into a spelling bee between the fans to see whose cheer is more annoying.

I don't follow college baseball at all, but this was in the first NCAA rulebook that turned up on Google:

Quote :
"b. If the defensive player blocks the base (plate) or base line clearly
without possession of the ball, obstruction shall be called. The umpire
shall point and call, “That’s obstruction.” The umpire shall let the play
continue until all play has ceased, call time and award any bases that are
justified in Rule 2. The obstructed runner is awarded at least one base
beyond the base last touched legally before the obstruction.

A.R.—If the base runner collides flagrantly, the runner shall be declared safe on the
obstruction, but will be ejected from the contest. The ball is dead."

http://www.titans.uwosh.edu/2008OshkoshRegional/BaseballRules.pdf

If anything, the catcher was obstructing the runner.

[Edited on May 30, 2010 at 10:08 PM. Reason : It really sucks that the guy got hurt, but don't go crazy.]

Quote :
"A.R. 1—If the fielder blocks the path of the base runner to the base (plate), the runner
may make contact, slide into, or collide with a fielder as long as the runner is making a
legitimate attempt to reach the base or plate."

If he was trying to dislodge the ball from the catcher, then that would be illegal, and that appears to be the only difference from the way the pros play.

I'm going off a play from two ACC tourneys ago. Our player railroaded the catcher and I don't think the catcher had the ball and our player was ejected for not sliding.

Team Offensive Interference
SECTION 3. No offensive team members, either in or out of the lineup,
shall physically or verbally hinder, confuse or impede any defensive player
who is attempting to make a play.
PENALTY—(1) The umpire shall call offensive interference and call out
the runner on whom the play was attempted, or would have
been attempted.

If he is trying to make a play on the ball, which he was, the ball was in the air 5 feet from him. OUT!

I'm hoping that after the NCAA's end and we get a new AD, we take a look at Tom Holliday's role. He's in charge of the pitching and nearly a decade into the head coaches career we shouldn't have to be piecing together starting staffs for 2 years in a row. We had no other option when Sasser got in trouble today.

Holliday hasn't been on staff for 10 years. What are you even saying? Avent needs to recruit better pitching? Holliday isn't a good coach? I can't even tell. Holliday is known around baseball as one of the best considering how good his pitching was at Texas.

without looking this up or anything i thought they said on TV last night or the night before you can't block the path but you can be wherever you want to be if you are moving to catch the ball

I'm saying we need to find out what has gone wrong with whatever Holliday is doing since he's in charge of pitching. Avent has been here for nearly a decade and we shouldn't have the type of pitching we've had the last two years. Whether it is the fact Avent needs to recruit better, or Holliday needs to coach them up better. We had only 3 or 4 semi-consistent pitchers all year.

Just saw the replay on wral and that was bull. The runner clearly altered his path to hit the catcher. Hell, it looked like the runner had a clear path to the plate.

So if changing your path and lowering your shoulder into the catcher isn't flagrant, what is?

I'd like to see some video

I didn't see the guy change his path

He lowered his shoulder, but I don't know what else you're supposed to do when you're running full steam into a dude

Avent was pissed in that video when asked about that collision. Completely agree though, biggest thing about it was that it could've easily been avoided by the runner regardless of where the catcher was.

Fenway come on now if this was reversed we'd all say he was a tough play. From what I saw it was malicious and the kid felt bad about it. If anyone has the video post the link cause I would like to see it again. From what I saw we blocked the plate and gave him the right to run us over the injury the unfortunate outcome.

i didn't see anything wrong. just a tough, physical play and our guy wasn't ready for it.

no need to piss and moan over it, it's a sport, shit happens.
