I'd like to see another 8-12" fall here in Fayetteville.
It was a welcome morning. Sat on the screen porch and watched it fall sippin' tea. 1/27/2011 11:32:53 PM |

Not the Carolinas, but we are watching the development of an upper level system that could bring significant snow and ice accumulation to the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, and southern Kansas by late Monday into Tuesday. The OKC stations (or at least KFOR) have been saying all night that "life threatening weather is very likely. We here in SW OK will probably miss the bulk of the system, but the model runs are starting to agree more and more with this event although the track isn't quite set in stone. The latest GFS accumulation forecast (which I'm a bit wary of trusting; Euro and GFS have been trending higher though) is spitting out 16-20" of snow along and north of I-40. Looks like I will be doing plenty of live shots next week. I know our WxC trainer is none too happy since we're in the middle of a graphics and equipment change. Something to watch. 1/28/2011 1:24:51 AM |

^I don't think any of us want anything that serious, just a few inches would be a sufficient amount of snow, haha.
But even if that storm did track this way, it would do what most winter storms do when it comes to Raleigh. It would track too far north, too far south, or, my personal favorite, it tracks right through the heart of NC and there is a force-field of warm air around Raleigh that keeps any snow from falling. 1/28/2011 8:17:01 AM |

i'd be cool with 3-4 feet of snow as long as i've got power...my house, quite unfortunately, does not have gas, a fireplace, or a wood-burning stove (my next house WILL have the first and second and possibly the third) 1/28/2011 8:28:19 AM |

^I think he was talking about that storm system tracking this way after departing from Texas, at least that's what I figured when he posted that in here. Seems a lot of the stuff has been tracking in from the south and west of us and moving northeast. 1/28/2011 10:23:07 AM |

Sorry to scare you guys. This is only for the southern plains. Just something to track if you are missing the snow out in North Carolina. This system should move north and east of Raleigh. 1/28/2011 10:21:35 PM |

^^ historically you are correct but its been a wacky winter this year. lots of snow early in December and now an early warming trend. shit its going to be 70 on Weds and lows will not get below freezing all week. plus i'm ready for spring...saturday and sunday were a tease. 1/31/2011 8:48:58 AM |

Uh, lows will likely be near or below freezing from Wed night into the weekend. With below freezing more often than not.
I wouldn't count out anything so far just BECAUSE it's been so crazy. I mean, if you want wacky, look at the damned mid-MS and OH river valleys the next few days. Shit's about to get real. 1/31/2011 9:38:03 AM |

Shit's about to get real here in Oklahoma. NWS issued a PDS (particularly dangerous situation) winter storm warning for central and northeast Oklahoma. 6-12"+ of snow (5-9" for my area, SW OK), a light glaze of ice, 35+ mph winds, blizzard conditions at times, wind chills from -10 to 0. Store shelves are bare. I'm getting ready to play Jim Cantore on Tuesday morning. This will be an experience. 1/31/2011 9:50:11 AM |

^ i'm not a meteorologist, nor do i have the knowledge or experience to comment with any certainty on the ground's propensity for holding in heat, but given that:
- the high today and over the next 2 days are 30°F, 15°F, and 10°F above freezing (in order) - the lows are never as far below freezing as the corresponding high is above freezing, and - the air temperature remains above freezing far longer than it remains below
i'd say the ground retains enough heat to melt any accumulation with relative quickness 2/7/2011 12:50:07 PM |

depends on rate of snowfall. heavy snowfall will accumulate on warmer surfaces no problem. 2/7/2011 1:05:00 PM |

The storm you guys are expecting late week will swing through here (Oklahoma) Tuesday night into Wednesday. We are expecting a carbon copy of last Tuesday's winter storm. We're calling for 5-10" of snow with a base layer of light freezing rain. Winds to 40 mph. More blowing and drifting snow. Drifts to 3 feet.
This town sucks when preparing/dealing with winter weather. Lawton only owns 4 road graders and 4 sand trucks. Roads were still in horrible shape 3 days after the event. I guess I need to get my shopping done before there's nothing left on the shelves. I hate sending this region into a tizzy. 2/7/2011 7:30:18 PM |
