apparently, the touchpad costs $300 to manufacture....there's no way I would have even paid that price to get one and I think the mass hysteria would have been much much less had they decided to sell them at that price

and you know they make these things to get a profit, so I don't see them ever costing less than 50/100 bux more than the manuf. cost, but maybe soon the manuf. cost could go down or something

i just can't justify paying full cost yet. not with my iphone and a pretty high end laptop. sure for $99 it would be great to have one but i'm not going to jump out there and get an ipad because i missed out on this deal.

I dont understand why it is a limit of 1 per customer, but somehow the employees can buy as many as they want to. I can imagine corporate Best Buy would be cool with their employees making a profit off of something like this. Just another reason I hate Best Buy and wont be shopping there

From what I heard yesterday when we were in the store in Greenville, that even if the store got units in on the truck, they would be sent back to HP and not sold in the store.

And one per customer means one per customer INCLUDING employees. And that was for the units that they already had in the store on shelves, not in a warehouse somewhere.

lol. They sent them back to the stores for the specific purpose of the stores selling them. This was confirmed on best buy's site. Someone is pulling some shady shit if they're claiming they're sending them back to hp

I'm just telling you what I was told yesterday.

Employees are even sitting around waiting to see if they're going to sell any touchpads and none have come in.

--If a store is allowing employees to purchase as many touchpads as they want to, that's on the individual store's management and not the company.

Showed up at a Best Buy right at 10 this morning, only about 5 people waiting...guy tells us they are "in stock", but still are in the process of being delivered on the truck (ie: not in stock). Tells us he can take our order now and we pick it up later...15 minutes later and they still havent completed an order, finally telling us "the system" will not let them process the order since they arent *gasp* in stock. Ay caramba.

There's no way that the BB's being reported on are still selling in house stock. "Sending back to HP" is the excuse I would give the public if I decided to improve company morale by letting my employees have first crack at a limited stock hot item. *shrug*

^^I require super easy and flexible part time work that lets me make some side cash and gain access to Best Buy's employee discounts. =)

wut?

The management is the direct link from the corporate office to the individual stores, this is not a franchise thing.

Best Buy isn't that nice to its employees. I'm a former employee and my husband is in management with Best Buy. We were in the breakroom yesterday and employees can't even buy the units because they are not in the store. Employees have been told any units that come in on the truck have to be sent back to HP. Sometimes individual store managers pull shit, but they will get in a lot of trouble for it and possibly lose their job. (Ie. allowing employees to buy all of the units, selling a hot game before the release date, etc.)

they handed out tickets to people in line with either 16gb or 32gb and limited to 1-per-customer

Looks like the "supposed" shipment of touchpad's that was coming in early this morning never happened at the Cary BB. No more coming in at the moment. They were suppose to get 30. Also, the employees there told they had to wait in line like everyone else to buy one. I tried to get my buddy who works there to snag one, no dice.

All stores in our area are OOS as well. No incoming shipments anywhere.

lol. Ordered one from some random place called Kheelan yesterday and just saw this update on their site so we'll see.

Quote :
"Dear HP Touchpad Customers,

Yesterday, August 23rd, was an interesting day to say the least. There was an unexpected and overwhelming surge of traffic, phone calls and orders that caused technical issues with our site and some confusion throughout the entire supply chain.

The big question everyone is asking is why did the site say there was availability and now there is a back-order? The answer is that when we received the new pricing from Hewlett-Packard, we were told that there were 50,000 or so units available through distribution. An hour later we were told they were gone but that another shipment is on the way and is due to arrive the week of September 12.

THE ESTIMATED SHIPPING DATE IS THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12TH

We are working to get a firm answer as to how many units are in that shipment and what portion of them are allotted to us. When we know that, we will determine whether or not to offer more units for sale. The good news is if you placed an order yesterday, you have reserved a place in line.

There were also 2 main technical issues that occurred on our website:

The email exchange server reached its limit at some time around noon and order confirmations ceased being sent. Many of you placed an order but received no confirmation. We are working on manually confirming those orders as we speak.

Others placed their order and got to the check out page only to get an error when they tried to process the order. This was caused by the server going down intermittently which caused credit cards to be authorized but no order to appear in the system. We are working diligently to reconcile CC Auth's against customers with no orders in the system. As these are identified you will be contacted to either complete the order or cancel it.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, stress, or worry our lack or preparedness may have caused you. If you are okay with waiting, we should have a shipment in a couple weeks. If not, we will happily refund your credit card authorization.

bottombaby my comment was definitely a shady store manager hypothetical.

Quote :
"Update 11:47am CST 08/23/11:

At this time all remaining TouchPad inventory is on its way to our stores and will be arriving throughout the week. Best Buy will no longer be selling the Touchpad on BestBuy.com, or any other Best Buy channel other than our stores. We cannot share specifics on the timing or quantity of these shipments. As soon as a store receives shipment, it will be merchandised on the sales floor and will be processed on a first come first serve basis."

So whether this is an umbrella statement and required policy or each store ultimately makes the call; I don't see how shipping them back to HP would even make sense from anyone's standpoint. It's basically a zero risk loss-leader that is driving an ungodly amount of traffic to Best Buy locations.

Crazy ... Slickdeals has about 110,000 posts and 25,000,000 views for the HP Touchpad posts:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9&order=desc&sort=views

The next most popular post has only 780 posts and 108,792 views. Not even close.

And it has only been active for less than 5 days. Haha, I think this can be dubbed the most epic deal ever.

I hear the reason why HP is selling all of the Touchpads is that they found a fatal hardware flaw wired into each and every circuit that will detonate every single WebOS device on the planet on 11-11-11 11:11pm GMT. Also, this is just a rumor, but the battery is actually C4.
