Yeah that was some bullshit. THEY fucked up the shotclock, so we had to re-do the inbounds which resulted in us losing possession of the ball. Bullshit.

Bigs got owned inside, and we suck at free throws

The play cat made with about 4 mins left where he dribbled the ball down, dribbled around, and shot a fadeaway, giving them a rebound and a fast break 3 on the other end was a loser play. We need the PG to be smarter than that.

Cat sucks

Turner is shitty at defense

Also, is the high post supposed to look like this? We seem to have no real plan with what we're doing with the ball. Lacey and Washington bailed us out of so many busted ass possessions. Or maybe that was perfect execution?

Turner was NOT the first (which is what the rule says, not "next") person to touch the ball after he came back in bounds, Barber was.

The rule is intended for loose ball situations and the rare case where a pass leaves the passer's hands while the receiver is still out of bounds.

By the ref's interpretation, Barber could have dribbled another 20 seconds and STILL gotten a violation. Also, by that interpretation, if a defender ran out of bounds while guarding the ball, theywouldn't be allowed to try to steal or block a shot after they came back in

We would have struggled to win WITHOUT that call, but the call was horseshit

I wonder how much wants it. He doesn't show the traits of a great player imo. He's more concerned with bitches and shoes than he is with working on his jumper. He was the worst player on the floor for us vs Boise, and then two hours later he's on stage at some show and posting it on instagram. I wish he would post a video of him going straight to the Dail Center and getting up some shots instead. We all know that's never going to happen.

It's hard to say how good Purdue is, but they looked like a good team last night. This loss kinda reminds me of that @Cincy loss early last year. Our FIRST TRUE ROAD GAME against a physical, defensive team and we struggled some. This would have been a nice resume builder, but we've got plenty of chances to build our resume still left (I know it's early to be talking about that).

Gott said in his post game, and maybe it was just coach speak, that Purdue will maybe be one of the best defensive teams we play all year. We didn't have many easy shots all night. We need to work on FTs (duh) and rebounding against bigger teams. We've rebounded fine up till now, but we've mostly been the bigger team in these early games. I'd love to see Lacey be more aggressive in getting his shot, too.

Purdue will do well to be.500 in the B1G... But that is more about the conference strength than the team. They are tough inside.

glad we cleared up that that call was bullshit. as was said earlier in this thread, i don't think it necessarily cost us the game, but it damn sure reduced our chances of winning. and while i thought the officials were fairly consistent with calls against both teams, i thought it sucked that they got so whistle-happy in the 2nd half. but at least they were consistent with their frequent ass whistles. was like a too short concert. woo-wooooo-wooooooo-woooo

i'm ok with this loss. obviously it's disappointing, but considering we were on the road and playing a team with two 7-footers and some good shooters, i'm not too upset. clearly there were some plays that sucked (cat's TO's, the missed FT, etc), but it's college basketball - those plays are gonna be there every game for every team. at least we didn't completely shit the bed once we got down big early, as i've seen us do countless times in early season road games in the past.

my feelings almost exactly. This team is gritty, and if we can get the late game FT issues worked out, we'll be a tough out for anybody.

Because most of us have been watching college basketball for years and the call is never made....especially not with the game on the line. Hell it happened a few times earlier and no whistle. Officiating was inconsistent last night. Not a single over the back call.

Don't be fooled, Pur doo-doo defense is good NOT great. I think this team offense goes to the shitter once we face a defensively minded team like Virgina, I expect another blow out lost to the cavaliqueers in Charlottesville. Even though Lacey is good as advertised he can't bail us out of every situation, we need more players to step up.

A real shame that lunch pail guys like Chris Brickhouse and Chase Cannon don't see the court more. Always the first ones to the gym and last ones to leave. Real road graders. They play the game the right way.

Washington is streaky but he's trending in the right direction and plays with confidence which I like. However, he needs more B Ball IQ as some of his actions on the court make be cringe. I was most dissapointed with Barber because of his potential, he still plays like a high school point guard at times and will get exposed badly with good defenses. I hope Gottfried recruits a PG that can knock down open 3s, have a free throw percentage > 80%, and can smoothly run the offense. I would personally experiment with Caleb with PG once Barber goes into Bizzaro mode.

Hard to take away anything bad from the first road game of the season in a hostile environment against a tough opponent. We hung in there, coulda been rolled at various points, but continued to play tight defense and make big shots. They just made more plays than we did in the end, no shame in that. One of these days I'd like to see us run an actual offense against the zone though......

Exactly. Too early in the year to throw in the towel and say that the team is doomed. They hung in there and fought it out which is actually a great sign. Also good to see Washington developing. I think that there are more positives to be gained from a loss like this than stomping a scrub team. Not to start that moral victory aspect, but anyways.

Going on the road and losing a game like this should be enough to get the guys to realize what they need to work on and where they need to get better. We aren't gonna win them all so its a matter of what the young guys take away from losses to get better.

It should be pretty clear that in this earlier going, Cat hasn't improved like we anticipated and his play is currently got this team mired in mediocrity.

If he actually finds his game and we start firing on all cylinders however, we can play with just about anyone not named UK.

Things I don't like about this team:

Barber's FT shooting
Washington's 16 footers
Not working that hard for rebounds

Things I like about this team:

Most of the rest

^^ I think he's going to be criticized when he doesn't have an above average game from now on. Not fair but he's also highly recruited and our starting PG. He just seemed lost with his dribbling/decision making most of the game and not the confident PG he can be. He took a few bad shots late that really killed us too.

With that being said, he didn't take (and miss) a crazy amount of shots and didn't turn the ball over a lot so he certainly isn't why we lost the game.

I think it's funny how Barber's bad FT shooting is always called out but Lacey went 0-3.

So finding a PG that can hit open 3s, have a high FT %, and can run an offense is virtually impossible? OK.

Caleb has hit twice more 3s, a better FT percentage, and better passes. I'm not sure about his dribbling but his decision making so far has been pretty good besides some bone head freshman mistakes which is expected. Obviously season is still early but numbers is all we have at this point.

Cat had good games, and I'm wishing he proves me wrong. However, he has some issues that concerns me and the biggest are his free throw weakness when the game on the line and his decision making. Also, he still don't know how to beat the zone.

why are people complaining about washington's shooting? he was 8-15. if anything he should've taken more shots.

that was a good game played at a high level; it looked like a 2nd round game, to me. we lost narrowly on the road on december 2 at purdue (i.e. a real school w/ a real basketball team). we used to get run out of the gym in these games. what are y'all complaining about?

i really don't get it. has this board turned into nothing but trolls that just wait until we lose to post dumb shit? i turned off that game thinking "those were two tournament teams, could've won, really encouraging we didn't fold it in at any point, b/c there were a lot of opportunities to", then i come on here and people are talking about cat being an idiot. what?

Cat is fast, but his handle isn't good enough to keep up with his speed, which is why he can't get into the lane as much as he should. His handle is so bad I expect him to get pick pocketed 2-3 times a game at the top of the key. Can't have your point guard being a turnover prone, can't hit free throws guy.

Not to mention there are times when I watch him and go, "WTF were you thinking?". I love what the Martins bring to the floor and think they are gonna be very good players for us down the road. Hell, Caleb should probably be starting now.

First road game, first test against a team that we don't just out-athlete. They hung in there and prolly should have won. Now what they need to do is go hammer Wake Forest this weekend and put this game behind them. A road loss against Purdue is not going to keep this team out of the tournament. A loss against Wake Forest, however, very well could.
