Like I said. Purdue made plays and we didn’t. You can’t let it get to OT against a top 5 team. They’re too good to give them 5 more minutes. We can all agree on that.
Can you agree that the Ot officiating was dog shit?
Both things can be true. We didn’t make plays at the end of regulation. We also got fucked by missed calls in OT that really took away any chance we might have had

Plenty of time to make noise in the conference and get quality wins there. I’m not at all confident that we’ll actually play this well the rest of the season. But we did just prove we can play with anybody in the country. Didn’t trail the #1 team at all for 40 mins. That’s good!
Also for the “the season is over” talk…we weren’t looking like a NCAAT before this game either. So this doesn’t change much at all. If anything it gives a sliver of hope and optimism that we can up our level of play.

Lol. Well, to catch you up. We outplayed them for about 37 ish minutes. Couldn’t close it out in regulation. Purdue was the better team for the last couple minutes of regulation and OT. And the refs also missed a couple of very obvious calls that aided Purdue in OT. 12/12/2021 5:06:20 PM |

If the Purdue player touched it on Hayes’ in bounds then it’s a T. If he didn’t, then it’s a warning and we get a redo. And it kinda looked like he touched it but I never saw it definitively. Either way, yes, that was a huge missed call 12/12/2021 5:30:01 PM |
Money_Jones Ohhh Farts 12521 Posts user info edit post |
^yeah, I have no confidence that we would have made a shot if given a retry with 2 seconds left, but the refs fucked up and took that opportunity away from us that we should have had. The Purdue player clearly stepped on the line which would be a warning. It’s very likely that the ball was tipped also, im not 100% clear on the rule, but I think the Tech would maybe only be if it was hit while our player was still holding it, it either way we should have retained possession 12/12/2021 6:14:02 PM |

I don't see how you could watch that game and come away discouraged about our team... we were all expecting to have a bad team this year, and came into this game expecting to lose big. Tough to lose in the way we did but the fact we hung with the no. 1 team is definitely promising, even if it was the perfect storm of us shooting great and them playing poorly 12/13/2021 8:12:30 AM |

We got hot from 3 early. But it’s not like we shot the lights out. Finished 41.9% from the field, 38.1% on 3. Can’t expect to shoot that we’ll from 3 every game, but it’s not like we shot 60% on 3.
We’re always gonna struggle if/when Hayes, Terq, and others can’t hit shots. But as yesterday showed, when they hit shots (at just an average rate) we can be pretty good. 12/13/2021 9:32:17 AM |

Going to have a hard time closing out game with the limited bench and the way we play. KK is going to have to switch it up and not press as much. also if any big in foul trouble we are going struggle.
also we took the air out of the ball last 3 mins. not sure if that was the plan or the guys were gassed, but that def let Purdue get back in it. lots of dribbling and no ball movement.
Hayes and Smith disappeared last 3 min.
i expect more games like this, mixed with a few blowouts. If everyone stays and the recruits are legit good, next year could be a big step in the right direction. 12/13/2021 9:51:30 AM |

LOL. There is still time, but our current recruiting class for next year is not going to be immediate impact guys. You might be thinking of Dillingham, but he is 2023. Either way, this line is the same thing everyone says every year.
Also, I hate to say it but "lots of dribbling and no ball movement" is seemingly the Keatts half-court offense...if not by intent, then certainly functionally. Even the most optimistic around here would likely agree with that. If you remove pressing and trunover buckets, we don't score points. It's been that way since he got here no matter the players we have.
Now, I do like the extra dimension that Seabron's driving has added, and that alone has made this my favorite of Keatts' teams, but until Keatts brings in an assistant who specializes in offensive development, this looks like our lot. It's a shame given the coaching turnover down the road that we aren't poised to take over with a year 5 coach who has only his system and recruits.12/13/2021 10:18:57 AM |

That's actually one of the things he's done this year that I liked the most -- he has been pressing less. You're absolutely right about bigs, though. As soon as one of them fouls out we're in instant trouble12/13/2021 11:08:07 AM |
jocristian All American 7527 Posts user info edit post |
It was fine... until it wasn't and we blew a 12 point lead in 3 minutes because we couldn't buy a bucket. Scoring droughts have been a consistent theme with Keatts.
Anyways, I think I am gonna stop with the Keatts criticism this season as I do genuinely like this team and I think the development of Ebe and Seabron this season has been impressive.
I'm just frustrated that we are in as good a position as any to become the elite of the ACC and it seems we are destined to be at best a bubble team over the next 3 years. Just like many NC state coaches before him, he is good enough to not get fired, but not good enough to make a real move towards sustained success.

I actually really like this take on PI
https://packinsider.com/2021/12/13/our-take-on-nc-states-heartbreaking-ot-loss-to-1-purdue/
Quote : | "We talked about it after we watched the Rutgers game. For NC State to have a chance, they need to follow the Rutgers blueprint. Play the bigs one on one down low, lock up guards, and limit good 3 point looks.
Keatts had his guys following this to a t. You can get on the man for his lack of play-calling down the stretch or the fact that his players just didn’t make plays when they needed to, but for about 37 minutes, his team was locked in on the strategy. Dowuona held his own in the paint. Edey struggled, but there was no answer for Williams. This, however, was the trade-off you had to be ok with. Purdue rarely got open looks from 3, they limited Ivey for the most part (aside from the final 5 minutes of regulation and all of OT), and they locked up the shooters (Purdue shot just 21% on 5-21 from long range).
This should be expected of a Keatts squad. They always play hard, they always hustle, and they always defend. He’s a defensive coach despite the fact that he has a reputation for letting his guys play free on offense. This team made the #1 team in the nation look lost offensively and that’s a product of defensive strategy and building out a roster of long, athletic, interchangeable parts and can switch every screen and rarely get caught in a mismatch.
The point is, there is a lot you should be praising Keatts for in this game. I know good and well the narrative is going to be “Keatts has no offense!” or “Keatts isn’t a good Xs and Os guy.” The fact is, those are probably more true than not. But don’t let that get in the way of seeing just how masterful the gameplan was executed against a team that had every advantage coming in." |
This seems like a fair read of it. I'd agree with this too >
Quote : | "For Keatts, it’s about continuing to develop Dowuona and Smith. It’s about circling back and putting in a series of sets that they can go to when the game is on the line. This team has no problems playing hard and playing together, but they need to learn how to close. This will be on Keatts and it won’t be done by motivating guys in the huddle. It will be done by making it very clear the expectations of possessions down the stretch. The reigns need to tighten as the clock starts to wind down. There needs to be clear direction on who had the ball in their hands and what types of shots will be acceptable. Keatts needs to own this. If they lose because Seabron wasn’t able to get it going down the stretch, that’s fine, but he needs to be the one dominating the ball and making plays. So far he’s shown a ton of success when he needs to force the issue. He gets in the lane and either scores or gets to the line. At this point, you win or lose with the ball in Seabron’s hands." |
and this...
Quote : | "Under 5 minutes, with the lead, when it’s time to close, to nail the coffin shut, you put the ball in Seabrons’ hands and let him go. That’s it. No Hellems fade-aways. No dribble-drive pull-ups by Cam Hayes. No contested corner 3s from Morsell. Only Seabron creating, scoring, getting to the line, or finding a wide-open shooter. That should be the only allowed outcome for Keatts and hopefully, he’s seeing that.
There has to be a fine line between instilling confidence and letting them play and directing them on what needs to be done to win this game." |

I think Purdue’s defense deserves credit for making things difficult for Seabron. He ended up with solid numbers, but he definitely couldn’t get to the rim as often/easy as other times this season. Which is where it helps to have reliable shooters and scorers around him. And Hellems did hit a few shots and played well. And Terq did too, but he seemed to go quiet in the second half. Maybe if Morsell had been 100% or Terq was still hot in the second half it might have been different. I just think it’s easier said than done when talking about “give it Seabron and let him to go to work” against one of the best teams in the country. 12/13/2021 1:54:14 PM |

I think in overtime the thing that really killed us was a couple possessions where purdue didn't score and Smith and Hayes came down the court and put up contested long jumpers early in the shot clock. At this point the game was still like a 1 point game, but they just gave away possessions taking bad shots and the refs did the rest.
That's the kind of hero ball i can do without. No need to shoot those shots unless the shot clock is about to run out. There's no excuse for taking them with 15-20 seconds left.] 12/13/2021 2:37:05 PM |
