" As Democratic candidates make moves to solidify their support ahead of the gubernatorial primary, Tom Steyer released a new plan that would take drastic steps to combat ICE — including jailing agents.

The progressive billionaire candidate published a blog post Tuesday outlining his plan to push back against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He said it’s not enough for Democrats to “simply engage in rhetoric” and claim to stand against President Donald Trump’s administration.

Steyer compared his plan to the way law enforcement fought the mob and called the federal agency a “violent extremist group.”

It’s the right rhetoric but it’s too early to say it. They need to only say it when they have the power to do something about it. Saying it now just increases the chances they align behind a trump coup attempt.

Where did the money go? Just like Russia, it got pocketed by the ultra rich."

"I’d like to see a Dem propose limiting stock buybacks and dividends for any Corporation with a petroleum related or military industrial IRS sector ID, until a ceasefire can be reached. Call it something like “No Profits for War Act” and then go on cable TV, get indignant, and start linking this Iran debacle with the biggest memes from the Iraq War. “THIS IS IRAQ 2.0. WE DONT NEED MORE DICK CHENEYS AND HALIBURTONS, WE DONT NEED MORE $400 HAMMERS AND TOILET SEATS.”"

Package these rants together and it seems like a no-brainer to me, but I’m not seeing it IRL. Can anyone even name a single Dem currently running on this platform? I’m not talking about being generally opposed to the Iran conflict because War is bad or this particular episode is less than strategic. I’m talking about making the direct connection between Trump’s endless incursions and the military industrial sector’s profits. Even a significant portion of MAGA recognizes this grift. Some Dems, even if it’s not all, need to start hammering this point. It’s going to find broad agreement.

Every fucking day there’s more bad news. Bison…really? They’re gonna kick the bison off public lands? Because Trump’s getting a reacharound from the beef lobby and wants to use that land for cattle.

These are the types of issues moderates would rally around, I think. You’re not gonna win trying to point out corruption in the White House, you’re not going to win by pointing out how horrible of a person Trump is. Everybody knows that at this point.

The bison thing is small, but couple that with the attacks on our national parks, wetlands,

Nevermind, I give up. This country will be so gerrymandered by the next election, math is going to win, not sentiment.

The former First Lady of the United States appeared on the podcast "Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso" ... and the two discussed the massive right-wing political movement that rose to the top of American politics under President Donald Trump.

Obama says it's not as simple as labeling anyone who supports the movement a racist or to assume they don't care about the vulnerable in society ... arguing people who voted for President Barack Obama twice jumped over to Trump because the system simply wasn't working for them anymore."

Many such studies have looked at this

Quote :
" The data revealed that White evangelical Protestants and those who view the Bible as the literal word of God tend to be highly politically conservative. “White evangelicals are highly likely to be politically conservative, so much so that there is little difference in the likelihood of being politically conservative between those with higher and lower levels of racial resentment,” Schwadel said. “We refer to this as a ceiling effect.”

“In other words, racial resentment cannot explain differences in the likelihood of being politically conservative among white evangelicals because they are almost all politically conservative,” Schwadel noted. For non-evangelical White Americans, the pattern looks quite different.

“Non-evangelical white Americans, on the other hand, are not particularly likely to be politically conservative,” Schwadel explained. “But, non-evangelical whites with higher levels of racial resentment are far more likely to be politically conservative than non-evangelical whites with lower levels of racial resentment.”

The study provides evidence that among White mainline Protestants, Catholics, affiliates of other religions, and nonreligious individuals, racial resentment is a strong predictor of conservative political views
"

https://www.psypost.org/how-racial-resentment-relates-to-political-conservatism-across-different-white-religious-groups/

It’s worth asking why these whites feel so much racial resentment when every metric shows white privelege remains persistent and rampant (except in suicide rates). A big part is rightwing media just feeding them lies, and there’s probably a hapless subset who genuinely has grievances but if their grievances were an issue the government could address, it would be more prevalent in metrics.

Where did you grow up in NC? The community I spent my school age years in has had sharp declines in jobs that pay a middle class wage. They are making 16% less and paying 2x as much for food as they did in the 1990s.

Quote :
"The NC Commerce Department reports manufacturing employment declined approximately 48% (˜400,000 jobs) between 1993 and 2010. The "Big Three" Piedmont industries collapsed in sequence"

Quote :
"Furniture and textile manufacturing in the Piedmont Triad collapsed from the late 1990s onward: North Carolina lost roughly 360,000–400,000 manufacturing jobs (about 43–48%) between 1993 and the early 2010s, with textile mills down 85%, apparel down 94%, and furniture down 59% (NC Commerce Department); the Greensboro–High Point MSA alone shed about 26,000 manufacturing jobs (–32%) between 2000 and 2019, with the worst losses concentrated in 2001–2005 immediately after China's WTO accession."

Quote :
"Real median household income in the MSA fell from ~$74,800 (in 2023 dollars) in 1999 to $63,083 in 2023 — a ~16% real decline. The U.S. national real median rose from $71,980 (1999) to $82,690 (2023) in inflation-adjusted dollars (FRED MEHOINUSA672N) — a ~15% gain. The Triad has thus underperformed the U.S. trend by approximately 30 percentage points over 24 years"

Quote :
"It is usually those whose poverty is relatively recent, the “new poor,” who throb with the ferment of frustration. The memory of better things is as fire in their veins. They are the disinherited and dispossessed who respond to every rising mass movement."

What are you trying to say? There’s people who live in depressed towns in every election going back to the beginning of time. We’re taught at an early age to look out for the charlatans promising koolaid from the water fountains, it’s the message behind the pied piper story and emperors new clothes and many others. Between 1999 and 2023 there’s been 12 years of democrats and 12 years of Republican presidents.

Does white racial resentment become justified when your life sucks? If someone who’s struggling hears 1 politician say “yes we’ll help you but racism is bad and dont be hateful to transgender people”. And then another say, “yes we’ll help you but you’re right that Blacks and Latinos have been getting more privileges by the other side and it’s why your life sucks, we’ll fix that and punish them all for you” is the latter just an anomaly we shouldn’t expect to have downstream effects from*?

I think it still all Comes back to Fox News. They’re infusing the majority of white people with constant flagrant misinformation, so democrats are always responding to things like litter boxes in schools, instead of them hearing principles/philosphies of people like Buttigieg.

* we did just see a slim majority of uneducated whites in polling disapproving of Donald Trump so maybe they’ve learned what they should have learned in elementary school, but still a lot of hate-pilled people out there

I'm rejecting that a 2016 Trump voter voted because of race on average. A good example in our own state is those people in the Piedmont lost their livelihood. A good livelihood by a lot of standards (if you aren't comparing it to a northern/coastal liberal standard). In 2008, as they were losing their jobs for good they were told, "learn to code/retrain for a new economy". Then Bush and Obama presided over the bailouts and gave the Wall Street class billions of dollars. Now everything costs a lot more and those people without jobs, say the bottom 80%, are even more fucked. The Tea Party ramps up in 2010 and then the democrats pivot to the culture war to distract from economics issues. Frame everything as race and alphabet grievances. They win gay marriage and make huge strides to change the culture successfully.

Meanwhile, those same people aggrieved from 2016 are still bwned. Now they know Trump was just a con and they still have no help. For 10 years since 2015 cost of living has gone way up and there have been no accommodations or solutions for those people. Now we are entering the AI era, so given what happened with the middle class, we get to see the same treatment for the upper middle class if history repeats.

Or maybe the robots will make "Potatos Pavé" from French Laundry and give you a hand job as you cry over your meaningless existence.
