What do you guys think about the savage package scopes? I bought a savage gvxp. It's got a OD green synthetic stock, blued action, free floated, fluted barrel, and accutrigger.
It came with a 3-9x40mm that I believe may be originally manufactured by simmons. It seems okay, but it glares like a mother fucker, eye relief is really sensitive (are all optics this way or are some more forgiving in this department than others? I'm pretty new to optics.), and the glass lacks clarity under high power. Since I don't have a way to see what the scope costs independent of the rifle, I have a hard time judging its quality vs other stuff. Would it be worthwhile to upgrade if I want to cap my budget at $50-75? I know there is infinitely better glass out there, but I only want to bother if I'll get a lot of bang for my buck doing so.

Bigstallion, shit happens with all makes and models. You can't say a product is inferior based on one incident unless you can trace it back to a design, materials, or systemic manufacturing flaw. I've got a 500 and an 870. I've never had a problem with the 500 but my 870's bolt has bound up at full lockup after firing a shell, basically making it useless. Neither gun is perfect and they've both got their advantages and disadvantages.
^The scope on there is probably a $50-100 scope. For the most part you can't get a decent scope for much less than $200. The only exception to that IMO is the Simmons whitetail classic. I think you should save up for a nicer scope or not bother with swapping.

I got a Mk III the other month and while it took a little getting used to, I really like it now. It has that 'tack driver' reputation and it's really an accurate gun. I've got the stainless 6 7/8", which in retrospect was probably a waste, it's a sexy gun. Living in a city, I do most of my shooting in ranges so it makes for a fun plinker thats easy on the wallet. 3/5/2011 12:51:27 AM |

I do have a question though - for Wake county, can I do everything at the Sheriff's Records Office on Salisbury Street? I know some counties require you to go to the Sheriff's office and to the courthouse. 3/6/2011 12:50:02 AM |

^ Yes. The digital fingerprinting that is also required is in the adjacent office. Everything is conveniently in one building and takes about 20 minutes.

not for $75, but if you bump up to $100, you can get a nikon prostaff 3-9x40. i have two of them. they are good scopes for the money.

With my work hours I'm not able to shoot as often as I would like; I've started doing a lot of dry firing during the evening. These videos are an excellent tool for transitions and whatnot:
http://www.predatortactical.com/cart.php?m=knowledgebase_detail&id=5
I hook an HDMI cable up to my TV and practice dry-fire. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but whatever. Also I've started recording myself on the draw and fire, malfunction drill and reloads to see where I'm slowed down by lack of economy in motion. I found out that I was going to a full isosceles before the pistol ever came out of holster, which was bringing my presentation times way down.
Anyway some helpful drills for IDPA crowd. 3/10/2011 7:06:49 PM |

I am LOVING the savage mark ii I bought last week. I don't really consider myself a good shot, but I can do an 1" or so groups at 50yds with an improvised rest and bulk ammo. I figure I can get them below an honest inch when I find ammo it likes and get a decent set of bags...oh yeah, and learn to shoot worth a fuck.
tl;dr: Buy a Savage mark ii 3/10/2011 8:43:58 PM |

just a heads up--
went by Mark's Guns & Ammo in Dobson this week while visiting my mom in Mt. Airy, they've got a handful of Sig p250 packages they're letting go for cheap, if I'd brought my PPP I'd have one right now....but they'll have a spot at the March/April gun show.
comes with the pistol, two barrels (.40 and .9mm i think, the former designed for the .357sig cartridge), 3 mags, night sights, a case and a couple other things for $550, iirc
held it and did some dry-handling, feels GREAT, smooth as butter...would make a great CC complement to my 4506
anyway tell'em that long-haired dude on the honda sent ya

would anyone be interested in getting a group buy on powder and/or primers together through somewhere like powder valley? their prices are pretty good, so 4 or 5 people splitting up the hazmat fee would still save you money and keep you from waiting until the gun show at the end of april. someone in raleigh would probably need to place the order. wouldn't make sense for all of y'all to drive up to roxboro to pick it up from me, but i pass through raleigh a lot.

Countdown has started: 12 hours till my 2-day defensive carbine course starts. http://defensiveconceptsnc.com/rifle.html#defensivecarbine
I'll to an AAR (after action report) when I get back and get my thoughts together, some time monday. I'm pretty sure I'm going to feel like my ass was beat and that I'm incompetent. At least that is what I'm hoping in a small way. Then I will feel like I really learned a lot.
The course is 1k min of .223 and 300 min of pistol (.40). This will be the first time really using my AR in anything but a static range, and I will get to see how well I actually built it, and if I set it up well, or stupid. I have already heard bad things about my optic mount that I am using, but I don't know if that is internet hype or fact.
Besides my training and practice regimen, I think what this course is going to convince me of is that I need a better trigger, more trigger time, and a lighter rifle (currently 9.2lbs unloaded). 3/11/2011 7:33:09 PM |

^Marlin 795 for the best bang for the buck on a new gun. Dicks is doing the sale on them right now, and I think its $109 after rebate. Throw a scope on there and bang...killer gun. I have one that I love. Muuuuuuccchhhhhh more accurate than my 10/22, it does under 1/2" at 50yrds with match ammo. Quality control on the new Marlins being built at the Remington plant is shitty, some are good some are bad. Just ask to look at the different ones they have in stock and pick the best one.
Aside from that, a used Marlin 60 or 10/22 should come in at under $150. Older models are best, no plastic crap and better wood stocks. 3/12/2011 8:10:00 AM |

Pistol Purchase Permit Questions:
1) I live mostly in Raleigh, but my Driver's License is still registered at my home address in Catawba County, not Wake. I'm assuming that this means that I have to apply for a permit at the Catawba County Sheriff's office instead of Wake County Sheriff's office. Is that correct? Does my DL address make me ineligible for a Wake County Pistol Purchase Permit?
2) If it does make me ineligible for a Wake County Pistol Purchase Permit, would it be possible to receive a permit in Wake County if I changed my DL to my Raleigh address? Would the fact that I live in an apartment make any difference? 3/15/2011 8:34:19 PM |

With the price of gas, it'd be cheaper for you to pay for a new license than drive all the way home. Since you live here, it won't make any difference in getting the permit here.
