Oh yeah, I just bought $120 worth of B&W ISO100 120 film, $60 worth of transparancy 120 film, $100 B&W ISO100 4x5 film and about $80 color 4x5 film... And that's just for this semester, not including b&w or color paper. And that's the bare min.

We just had an 8 long seminar today at school, pretty much a crash course in color management from a pro photog and color tech. Pretty damn awesome and learned a lot. Btw, I asked them what they thought about Huey's colorimeter... Our teachers condemn it, the pro photog didn't like it and the color tech absolutely hates them with a passion. Sorry Kiwi.

Xrite or Spyder. I have the Spyder3 Elite and love it, but after I got hands on demo with the xrite stuff today, I might switch over, plus invest in their printer calibration/spectrometer device.

JSnail I just went to your website. Very nice -- if I ever get a pretty dog, you can take some nice shots of it.

CharlesHF, even the "non-pretty" dogs will do hehe but thank you! I need to update my site with some new pics...maybe this weekend! I should do a TWW discount!

gunzz, that took about 20 tries, a self timer, a sore arm, and LUCK...but I love how it came out! thank you

A friend of mine that shoots a lot of medium format uses Efke films often. Really like the silver look of it.

Jsnail how did you get that sort of black and white? The crispness and the hues seem different from normal black and white.....does that even make sense?

Senez I love that dog pic, is it a Cairn?

It could be said that black and white don't really have hues.

Thanks. She's a scottie. It took all we had just to get her to go out in the snow. She was not a happy camper. Sort of like throwing someone out into water and they're looking for the first thing they can grab.

Is it really as simple as this? Is that what you do Jsnail? Change the selective coloring?

Kiwi, I've got a handful of ways that I convert to bw, depending on the picture. The one you commented on actually has a VERY transparent blue layer over the bw conversion.

Play with the channel mixer (with monochrome selected).

eta: the "crispness" you mentioned has to do with both my camera and lens combo, as well as an un-sharp mask I applied in post. You have to be careful with it though (the usm) because too much and you get a halo effect (and its not very appealing on people, as it shows EVERY little blemish in the skin). make a new layer from the background, apply the usm, then use the slider to change the opacity so it isn't so strong.

I thought it looked slightly blue but then again it could have been the monitor.

Thanks for the tips! It looks great!

Anyone want to help me setup a really cool post apocalyptic photo shoot in Raleigh? I'm thinking somewhere in Downtown Raleigh and maybe in March or April when it's warmer. May shoot for a zombie theme inspired by Left 4 Dead, Fallout3, I am Legend and Stalker. Probably shoot for portfolio on a 4x5.

Might go scouting in the next few weeks. Maybe a col-de-sac or a residential area so we don't have to block off traffic. Maybe 2-4 models and 30 or so extra's.

Some shots from my trip to DC.
I was so busy working that I had almost NO time to shoot at all. The only time I was still long enough to play with my camera was on the metro.

i'm gonna throw this out there

this isn't a personal attack

but one of the most overused shots i've seen lately (especially at the innaugural shit) is the "photo of someone taking a photo" photos

i've done it
i do it when i can compose a good shot
i will do it in the future

but its definitely a statement on our cultural's enhanced love of the camera

i mean, just think that you have more photos of you tagged on facebook than your great grandparents ever even had taken of them, possibly combined

Ok, I finally got my XSi, and here's my first attempt at some shots. I'm sure i noobed all over myself, so feel free to drop some CC.

The last one was taken with my Canon Powershot Pro 1, which is sort of a hybrid between a P&S and an SLR.

What's with the link? Am I missing something, or did you just randomly post a mediocre wedding photographer's blog link?

Upon further review, I see this lady is where you get some of your inspiration.

You get what you pay for. If her clients are happy with the results, then whatever, but honestly, her stuff is mediocre at best. She does have some nice pics in some series, but yeah, 60% of her pics is with the Kiwi Crop, what's annoying me is the fact that she's doing the Kiwi Crop on formal pictures! wtf?

I just "won" a bunch of money in an insurance settlement.

Instead of doing something irresponsible, I'm going to pay off all of my credit card debt. But don't think I'm not tempted to pull the trigger on a 5D MKII or a 24-70 or some lights and remotes or a tripod or...

Every time I see this thread I wonder what it's actually referring to, since I know nothing about cameras.

Immediately after, I think that "Digital SLR" would make a good band name for an electronic group.

lawl, same exact situation, but I didn't "win" money, I worked my ass off for my last contract job. It can pay off my credit card, or go towards the 5D mkII or some new lenses.
