Kiwi crop is when you do sharp crop angles that has no design elements whatsoever.

I'd just like to know your thought process and why you thought those pictures were following the "rules". Your insight helps me and other beginners

i have to say those aren't great shots and maybe only 1 has any use of 'design elements' in it or portrays anything interesting, it looks like exactly what you said it was, just some friends of yours having fun, nothing more.

this isn't directed at you persay jbaz, but i hate it when photographers claim photos are interesting just because they follow things like 'the rule of fourths'... for crying out loud, those are just guidelines to help make pictures more appealing than they may be in reality, doesn't necessarily make pictures of barb wire or dirt "interesting"

it's rule of thirds... these are just simple portraits.

^btw, using design elements and following rules tend to help communicate the picture towards the viewer. It's true that you don't have to follow the rules to make a picture interesting, nor does it mean if you follow the rules will the picture be meaningful or interesting. Graphic design and photography do follow the same rules 90% of the time and can convey meaning to the viewer.

All in all, if you can convey what you are trying to say through the picture towards the viewer, then you are communicating visually. Simple portraits don't really have much meaning since it's just a "mug shot". The funny spy pictures are just crack pot pictures and making fun of the TF2 computer game and has more meaning to us gamers than regular people.

You always get those people who "don't get it"; that's when the communication fails between the photographer and the viewer. It happens.

The only real picture that takes on the design elements is the one that's the "Kiwi crop"; takes advantage of the diagonals. The angles of the guns are opposite of each other giving a contrast there already. The viewer tends to start off with the pistol, following it lines of the pistol barrel and the lines of the suit, you end up looking at his head. From there you tend to view the eyes since the eye's is a very powerful element in a picture. Seeing his eye's look to our left, we move towards the shotgun pointed at his head. The opposing angles gives contrast and a since of balance, even though the picture is tilted a bit.

This is only one way to view the picture since not everyone see's a picture the same.

It seems to me Jbaz really isn't interested in helping others. I asked a simple question and he throws links and stupid statements right back at me. Seems he can do no wrong and Ronny will be his nut sucker. Seems like he posts the pictures for an ego stroke and not C&C or to help others.

you're a cry baby aren't you?

seriously though, figure some of this stuff out for yourself. I'm not trying to be harsh with you, but everyone has their own interpretation. Look at stuff, think what makes that picture pop or work. Having people tell you how to think doesn't really help you at all. I asked "figure it out for yourself" to see what you thought.

It's like people who don't read and just want to watch movies.

lol hardly. I just think you need to be brought down a notch or two on the elite photographer ladder.

Kind of hard to "figure it out on my own" when you claim to use very specific rules. I'm not trying to interpret the damn thing just see what YOUR thought process was. Additional perspectives do indeed help photographers grow as one should be looking through many viewfinders.

Seems like you just want to be a jackass.

Or you need to figure out that there are no steps to this ladder and if there were, the ladder would be a double helix where people can't figure out what's up and down. Seriously, there's no one right way in photography or graphic design.

btw, I'm not a jackass, I'm a smartass, I'm Asian.

These aren't specific rules, as it was said, these are just guidelines and can be used or not. That wiki link was a serious answer to you. Using graphic elements is a powerful tool to communicate certain aspects of your work. Doesn't mean you have to follow them, but 90% of the time you end up using them to make the photo pop out more.

Yet my angled photo SUCKS AND HAS NO GRASP OF ANYTHING and yours is perfect for following graphic rules, but wait the rules are loose and really only guidelines but then again my photo is shitty because of a freaking angle.......

no, your duck picture sucked ass mainly because the angle didn't add any meaning to the photo. I'm not saying my photo is the best in the world, I'm just saying I tried to use some design element to control how people see my image. Diagonal lines are very very powerful since its dynamic and points to something else in the frame or design. If all you have is one diagonal line, you just end up looking away from the picture.

Negative space is also a good way to control your subjects in your frame. We tend to group elements in a picture by tones or shapes or zones. Foreground, midground and background tends to be the different layers of separation, but contrast is another key way to show negative space. The human figure is a good example of a negative space as well as... negative space around the subject.

well spatially i'd agree with you, they're nice shots, but again, unless everyone in this thread is "in" on the inside joke, the pictures are in the "eh" category... meant rule of thirds, i was thinking four lines. my point was i think you can be a great photographer and know all the rules & principles, but if you're taking photos of crap or random stuff, the photos aren't going to cater to a large audience. some of the most meaningful and great photos are those that tell a story... not just random shots of your kitty playing in the grass, although they are good for sentimental reasons.

this rant wasn't directed at anyone in particular... but it's something i think about often when i take photos, there are sentimental photos (i don't share) and then there are photos i take of interesting subjects... i try to take some of both.

Seriously shit. Completely honest.

I'd rather have someone telling me my picture is shit than going on through my life thinking it's the best god damn thing in the world. Ignorance is bliss, but in the real world, it makes you look like a jackass. It's the only true way to learn. This is why I never show any work to my parents since they always say my shit is golden... Family lies... There is no cake... I want a cheezeburger...

^very true. I agree with you there. It does miss the market here, but I'd figure there had to be some gamers in chit chat.

btw, the one main reason why I'm not on flickr is the fact that 99% of the time, I see positive comments on shitty pictures then people saying crap about some really good pictures. And there's a lot of great photographers on flickr. I'd rather not join in on the sheepfest. Although I do post on facebook and see the same crap over and over. In fact, I see it on POTN and FM. Then when anyone tries to do a serious C&C, people jump on them for being mean.

i agree with you, but at the same time, i think most people want the "why" behind the shit... "why" is it a bad photo, etc.

but sometimes it just a bad subject. i mean grass is grass... sometimes there just isn't anything you can do to improve a photo during certain conditions or certain subject matters... that's part of the art behind it.... knowing what's interesting and what's not... (unless you're only concerned with what looks good to yourself, for instance if you like ducks).. there's a reason why some people say 'you have a good eye'... some of it's learned, some of it's talent, some of it's just a camera.

C&C is opinion, i mean it's an art isn't it? it's going to be subjective.

if you want good C&C, make sure you explain the purpose behind the photo. if it's for sentimental reasons, or just goofing off, if you mention it, then it removes a whole level of art criticism that isn't needed and you can get constructive criticism on the basics of taking the shot, without the crap about whether or not it's good subject matter.

or just plain ask... how can i make this shot better, aperature, ISO, shutter speed, lighting, setting, angle, color, etc. get more specific.

i think it's hard b/c we have such a broad range of experience in this thread.

i went through several pages trying to clean up all the stupid shit YOU and others were posting that just wasnt needed.

as its turned into Kiwi v/s most everyone else in this thread. so now its garbage.

dont worry...i will not be removing any more diarrhea from this thread b/c it can not be saved.

BACK TO REAL PICTURES (Hopefully they will work first time)

I scored a 50mm f/1.4 last night on ebay for $60... I'm excited to get my 2nd real lens... and I also got CS4 on saturday but don't have a clue how to use it, so I'm messing with it now on some of my Yellowstone stuff I shot in Raw... hopefully I'll figure out how to counter balance my laptops brightness when adjusting for contrast and exposure...

why not? it was at F/4 so not super shallow DOFwise. Maybe wasnt perfectly in focus, but pretty close i think. MF is getting easier, but still not perfect.

Not the new AFS 50mm, its the $100 Nikkor 50mm F1.8D.
