in order to select text on the iphone you have to tap on the text field and hold it for some unknown ammount of time (on winmo theres an indicator that spirals around where you click to show how long you have to hold making it more intuitive) then a menu comes up and i can drag the two sides of the selection box to the left and to the right to expand the selection.

With my solution its tap tap-drag you're done. If you think your way is more intuitive and easier you should drink more koolaid.

I, for one, would love it if copy and paste worked more like mouse-based text selection in Windows.

To be honest iphone copy and paste mirrors osx copy paste with a mighty mouse.

*select text, try to right click get a left click instead*
*reselect text, try to right click get a left click instead*
*reselect text, try to right click get a left click instead*
*bang mouse on table get mad*
*reselect text, take hand completely off mouse, gently and carefully try to get a right click*
*go to select copy from the context menu and somehow bring up the dashboard*
*smash mouse again in anger and fustration and get a $10 logitech scroll mouse from the junk closet*

I will say one thing...Apple didn't design copy paste with retards in mind. *shrug*

I guess that means I've been drinking the koolaid though...since I have no trouble copy/paste on an iPhone or Mac OS X with a mighty mouse.

Also...I don't think I've ever right clicked to copy anything.... windows or Mac. Not since they invented the keyboard.

copy and paste works better on the iphone than any other mobile device i've used. some of them are probably in the same league if i'm always sitting still and can really precisely tap or click on shit..but for being able to do it while barely looking at it while driving or something you can't beat their implementation. i really dont see how the hell you think it's so terrible because you have to hold your finger in the same place for what, a second and a half? whooptie fucking doo. i'd rather have that then a damn circle spinning around/popping up every time i touch the screen too long on windows mobile.

so I have had my 32Gb 3GS for a few weeks now and I am starting to wonder if I have a bum battery. I had a 1st gen and 3G iphone and the battery life on this one is significantly worse. (and that is compared to previous iphones)

take today for instance. Phone was at 100% charge as of 8:30am. since then I have had 62 mins of voice calls, no music played, no videos, maybe 10 mins of internet surfing, 15 texts and a few emails. Wifi, BT and 3G are on, and I have stayed in a wifi or 3G area the entire time. (BT was probably active for maybe 20 minutes) and as of right now, the phone is at 11% battery.

That just seems ridiculous to me. anyone else noticing issues like this?

^^

lots of reports of shitty battery life with 3.0 software.

i have a 1st gen iphone, and after moving to 3.0, my battery life is about half of what it used to be.

sounds normal to me. turn off the bt if you're not using it. 3g drains the crap out of it too. i'm in an edge-only area so i get about 2 days of use before the battery dies.

part of it is also due to the predictive battery usage...so if you just leave your phone in your pocket for a while without any use you will notice that 11% jumped up to 40% if not higher. I see this daily when I go from using my phone constantly to leaving it alone for a while. The battery percentage will jump significantly.

There's this program in cydia called red laser that is awesome. It lets you use the camera as a barcode scanner. It sounds kinda boring but it's actually pretty fun. I've been going around my house for the last 15 minutes scanning everything in sight.

i downloaded Pocket Universe last night and it is awesome. you can hold it up and turn around and it'll show you what stars/planets/other space whatnots you can see. tons of other features, info about the planets, shows you how to locate specific things, tells you when things rise & set. it won some award for best educational app. a must have if you're interested in that kind of thing imo. well worth the money ($2.99)

^^there's something called red laser in the apple app store. is that the same?

^^^I tried an app called "pic2shop" which reads barcodes, then finds internet pricing from various retailers. Pretty nifty. It works pretty well on my regular 'ol 3G.

How could they get copy and paste so right, but so wrong? Whenever I get a MMS I still can't go in and just copy the number and password to retrieve my message. I don't want the whole text as a selection.

The website http://www.viewmymessage.com/1 is extracted fine, but I still have to make a note or something to grab what I want.

you could copy/paste the whole thing to notes.app then select what you want from there. PITA..but better than typing shit by hand, to me anyways

If anyone even remotely cares about photography, you should check out a program called AutoStitch. It allows you to take a series of photos and stitch them together to make one giant panoramic image.

I made this of the road beside my house. It took like 2 minutes total. I do wish that the image had more detail (it took 10 ~1.3 Megabyte images and outputted a ~500 KB file) and obviously it would need some color touch-up and some work done to even up the edges. But for something that can be done straight on the iPhone in 2 minutes, I don't think it looks too bad.

Click for "high res" shot.

if anyone even remotely cares about photography, i doubt they are gonna be looking to their iphone for the photography needs.

but otherwise i suppose it's pretty impressive given the platform they had to work with

i wish on the auto correct thing.. i have plenty of misspelled words in mine too . in one version of a beta release it would auto correct wrong words for correctly spelled ones haha

and for the copy and paste thing i really dont know what the problem is..just hold your finger down somewhere that has text for a few seconds and it'll pop up a box to select stuff

Any good apps to print web pages and docs. I prefer free but a good pay solution would work too. Also could come from jailbreak repositories. I can't find one on cydia though.

no. but it's not as neat and shit as the app store app imo

as in if you're just browsing for random shit trying to find cool apps it takes a while.. you're better off just searching for what you want. google lists of top cydia apps and you should find some cool ones.. sbsettings is one of my favorites. that and 5 icon dock and 5 icon columns

Google Pulls Apple from Search Results

Quote :
"In response to Apple pulling the Google Voice application from the iPhone App Store, Google has removed all search results leading to Apple.com from its index. Google is also redirecting searches for "iPhone" and "app store" to the IMDb.com page for Payback.

The official explanation was that the Google Voice app duplicated functions on the iPhone, but many think the rejection order came from AT&T. The application would allow users to make calls and send SMS messages for free using the app, threatening the profits of AT&T.

The Google Voice application is still available for Blackberry and Android phones.

Google's official explanation for removing Apple from its search results came from Vice-President in charge of search, Marissa Mayer, "Those search results duplicate a lot of the functionality of other sites. For example, people can find cell phones on many other sites. We just think this makes it easier for our users."

Exclusion from the search results could mean lower profits for Apple, as 90% of visitors reach their site by typing "apple.com" into Google.

Mayer denied that this was a direct response to Apple rejecting the Google Voice application. "It's just a coincidence," said Mayer.

Steve Jobs hinted that another strange coincidence might occur soon. "Safari may be getting a different search engine, just saying," said Jobs.

"Oooh, I'm shaking," said Mayer.

Some industry analysts think the retaliatory moves could result in all-out war like back in 1939, when a Polish sausage company stopped using pork from Germany. In response Germany invaded.

"We don't want another situation like that," said Bank of America's George Pendry.

Apple stock was down on the news."

well...I guess thats a reason for me to stop using google and try out bing.com And not because I ever search for anything apple.com related through google but because google just sounds like a big whiny bitch.

this totally defeats the purpose of a search engine... regardless of if its apple thats blocked or some other site.

i'm not sure if you can access voicemails from your phone through the webapp.. it also makes it all pretty more or less... has an interface almost identical to the native phone.app as far as voicemails, calls and texts (well, it adds a tab for sms when compared to the native phone app)

Yes all BBSpot articles are satire ... RSX, calm down

However, the following is NOT a joke ... and all I have to say is ... wow, how far will Apple go? I mean seriously, claiming that jailbreaking leads to terrorism and drug dealing? WWWWOOOOOWWWWIIIIIEEEE, that's some stinky bullshit!

iPhone Jailbreaking Could Crash Cellphone Towers, Apple Claims
Quote :
"The nation’s cellphone networks could suffer “potentially catastrophic” cyberattacks by iPhone-wielding hackers at home and abroad if iPhone owners are permitted to legally jailbreak their shiny wireless devices — that’s what Apple claims.

A jailbroken iPhone is a weapon of mass disruption, Apple claims.

The Copyright Office is considering a request by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to legalize the widespread practice of jailbreaking, in which iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution through the iPhone App Store. Apple made the claim in comments filed last week (.pdf) with the agency.

The company’s filing explained that jailbreaking could allow hackers to altering the iPhone’s BBP — the “baseband processor” software, which enables a connection to cell phone towers.

By tinkering with this code, “a local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data,” Apple wrote the government. “Taking control of the BBP software would be much the equivalent of getting inside the firewall of a corporate computer — to potentially catastrophic result.

“The technological protection measures were designed into the iPhone precisely to prevent these kinds of pernicious activities, and if granted, the jailbreaking exemption would open the door to them,” Apple added.

Threat Level had no idea the iPhone was so dangerous. We’re gratified that Apple locked down this potential weapon of mass disruption before hackers could unleash cybarmageddon. This also explains why Apple rejected the official Google Voice App for the iPhone this week. We thought it was because Google Voice posed a threat to AT&T’s exclusivity deal with Apple. Now we know it threatened national security.

At stake for Apple is the closed business model it has enjoyed since 2007, when the iPhone debuted. More than 30 million phones have been sold. Apple has told the Copyright Office that its locked-down platform is what made the iPhone’s success possible.

The EFF has asked the regulators for the DMCA exemption, (.pdf) which would allow consumers to run any app on the phone, including those not authorized by Apple.

Fred von Lohmann, the EFF attorney who made the request, said Apple’s latest claims are preposterous. During a May public hearing on the issue in Palo Alto, California, he told regulators there were as many as a million unauthorized, jailbroken phones.

In an interview Tuesday, he said he suspected those phones have not been used to destroy mobile phone towers. “As far as I know, nothing like that has ever happened,” he said.

He added that, if Apple’s argument was correct, the open-source Android phone from Google on T-Mobile networks would also be a menace to society. ”This kind of theoretical threat,” von Lohmann said, “is more FUD than truth.”

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 says “no person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.” But under the law, every three years the Librarian of Congress and the Copyright Office must consider the public’s requests for exemptions to that anti-circumvention language.

Apple also claimed that jailbreaking would pave the way for hackers to alter the Exclusive Chip Identification number that identified the phone to the cell tower, which could enable calls to be made anonymously. Apple said “this would be desirable to drug dealers.”"
