Since no one is being nice I will point out exactly why you are an idiot
Quote : | "Marshall has improved programs every years he's been at them." | This is false. The first four years Marshall was at Winthrop he went to the NCAA tournament then he spent two years with no tournament berth. He finished out his career with three more tourney berths. If you graph that it is not improvement it is a plateau with a dip in the middle and a little spike on the end. At Wichita State he has shown that he might be able to very slowly build a team that one day could be a decent mid major.
Quote : | "Multiple NCAA appearances, one win. But he was 14+ seeded at the time. I argue that it's harder to win seeded that low. I argue that you have to take that into context when you judge his tourney appearance." | His one NCAA tournament win was as an 11 seed. Wait isn't VCU an 11 seed this year...
Quote : | "MUCH longer track record than Shaka." | longer track record of mediocrity and for some strange reason not being offered a big job.
Quote : | "Shaka has gotten hot, other than that he's done jack shit." | He has proven that he can win on the biggest stage possible with a severely out gunned team. Marshall has proven that he can sometimes be the best team in a really shitty conference. OH and he can win the NIT.
Quote : | "Past performance does not dictate future results.
Marshall's history indicates he could get us back to respectability better than Shaka." |
ummmmm way to contradict yourself there.4/1/2011 9:18:25 AM |

^ Yeah I was typing all that shit out quickly. Meant that a short past of going to one F4 miracle run doesn't indicate anything about future results.
Quote : | "His one NCAA tournament win was as an 11 seed. Wait isn't VCU an 11 seed this year..." |
Right, exactly. Once Marshall got a seed better than 14... he won. Yeah he didn't go to a F4 with his 11 seed but how may teams in history have? 2? 11 seeds typically win one or two games before bowing out.

Lets just face facts guys, we are no longer a relevant basketball program. We will continue to finish with 5-7 ACC wins every year and maybe on occasion get to 9 and sneak into the tourney to lose in the first round. We should just hire whoever is willing to take the job at the lowest price and turn our attention to football now and hope that somehow we can keep that moving in the right direction. 4/1/2011 9:26:44 AM |

If we all agree to acknowledge that he beat a team with greater talent than his, can you acknowledge that this happens on a daily fucking basis in college basketball and it doesn't mean a goddamn thing about the coach or whether we should hire him?

I firmly believe Gregg Marshall would be capable of that.
The funny thing is that no one is actually denying the statement that Gregg's ceiling is Sendek levels at best. I would rather take a risk on Smart being able to do better than go with the safer mediocre bet. Smart at the very least should be able to bring in ACC caliber talent and motivate the players on our roster. Marshall will probably rape harrow and kill leslie just to make a point.

Lowe beat a far more talented Villanova team. I guess he is a better coach than Wright?

So Marshall just beat some NIT teams and we are supposed to give him all this credit for great coaching while Smart just beat some of the most talented teams in the nation and his team "just got hot". You don't see the inconsistency of this argument?
At this point what NCSU needs more than anything is someone who can motivate (Smart obviously can) and can keep the talent coming in (Smart is reportedly a great recruiter). We do not need someone with possible personality problems coming in and alienating talent and scrapping the foundation that is in place.4/1/2011 10:14:15 AM |

^^^^^good point.
Smart had a major part in Donovan's recruiting of Boykin and Walker.
If Smart is who DY dons the new coach, our current players will be more than thrilled to play for him. With Marshall I could easily see the line of transfers/decommits grow.
I can only imagine what he could do for our recruiting vs Duke/UNC.
His only flaw is lack of "head coaching" experience. Other than that, he has mulitple years of Assistant Coaching experience, successfully recruited at a power conference (FL), and I'm fairly certain was a part of Donovan's team when he won NC.
I would like to believe that this is a direct correlation as to why he is so successful now. He has been on this stage, albeit as an AC, but nonetheless you can tell he used that invaluable expericence and has applied that to his current team.
Smart's ceiling is limitless, and if nothing else; NCSU could use the positive pub/press/etc.. he's created. It would be an instant "shot in the arm" that this program/fanbase/alumni need.

Because Shaka is black and Gregg is white? Lol what other reason leads to people saying shit like this? I thought we learned a lesson with Lowe and we don't need a best friend as head coach? That's what i was eluding to. Not that players would necessarily transfer or de-commit if Marshall was coach, but that Shaka has instant recruiting cred and nationwide name recognition at this point in time. Given recent events, I'd venture a guess that players & recruits would be excited and optimistic about Shaka and range anywhere from lukewarm to somewhat disappointed with a Marshall hire.
Also, does anyone really care about the NIT? If you were a top level recruit, would there be any real comparison in your mind b/t a coach who just led a mid-major to the final four and a coach that won the NIT? It seems pretty obvious to me, but that's just my opinion.4/1/2011 10:42:17 AM |

^^obviously the NIT is not the NCAA, but not take anything from Marshall, to win the NIT is still an accomplishment.
but couldn't agree more with Shaka. Beyond Steven's run last year (and this year); there has not been a more positive story in basketball. To reap any reward from that ie recruiting/motivation/etc. would only benefit the cloud of negativity that has over us that past few years.
