I love my 20 guage 1100, its a great youth and new shooter gun. That, and the fact that I can use it like a pistol with no issues as long as I use the low brass trap loads. On the other hand, I rack the slide on my 870 magnum 12 without even realizing it moved. If you hunt, and or shoot clays with a pump, you can actually out shoot somebody with a auto on a good day. 5/25/2011 10:24:21 PM |

^I guarantee I can out shoot any pump with my autoloader. But, I've seen quite a few people who always have problems with theirs and get outshot by pumps every weekend.

if somebody is good with an autoloader, yes, they are fast. However, I am jsut used to see more old, worn in not out pumps than auto's, and I was simply pointing out that once the shooter is used to it, getting back on target and or trigger cycle time is the only real limit on speed with any gun, a pump action more or less self cycles with recoil if you hold it right. I also like that a pump will allow me to cycle a misfire or dud out without missing a beat, and does not care what ammo I feed it. That said, I love my 1100, and love shooting my sisters browning auto 5 knockoff. 5/26/2011 1:12:44 PM |

^I agree totally. I shoot the patrol class with a pump in the police tournaments just because I prefer Iron sites over optics, but in 3gn or Multigun I shoot auto. I see a lot of people out there who are not skilled enough to need an autoloader, they would do themselves better to go back to a pump and learn how to shoot. Last month I finished a 16rd(birdshot knockdowns) all shotgun stage in 14seconds. Right behind my time was all old guys with pumps that knew how to shoot, at the very end 45seconds were all guys with autoloaders who couldn't shoot nor reload. 5/26/2011 2:39:28 PM |

get a pump.... learn on that. then try some auto loaders and switch later if you want. if i could only have 1 shotgun it would def be a pump. probably a Remington 870. once you learn a pump it's like a bike, you can pick one up and run it like crazy... it's much easier to transition from pump to auto than from auto to pump. 5/26/2011 8:54:53 PM |

^so true. Money wise you cant beat it. I spent less than $250 on both my pumps. I've put close to 800 in my auto, plus I think I am going to spend more to get the forcing cone lengthened, and trying get someone to hard chrome my bolt. 5/26/2011 9:17:56 PM |

I talked to the guy's Sergeant or CO or whatever about it. He apologized for the incident and said that he would sit down with his guys and go over GATTOTP and legal open carry. He seemed sincere enough about educating them that I didn't pursue it any further. 6/4/2011 7:34:25 AM |

see... I can understand this argument, but it isn't for everyone. It is like having a manual car- I think everyone should know how to drive one, but the fact of the matter is that not everyone does, and if you are stuck having to drive one and don't know how, it can get ugly fast. I, personally, only get to practice with my shotguns about 2-4 times a year, but my fiance never does, so if I had to have something laying around for personal defense, I'd rather it be the easy to drive automatic. To each their own, though. I would totally keep my current shotgun if I had more time to practice with it, and if I could get my fiancee more comfortable with it, but as it stands, I think I still would rather trade in (or hell, maybe just buy a second one) for a semi auto 20ga6/4/2011 1:25:05 PM |

^^why would you think it is not a proper round to use?
sure, a .45 is a great personal defense caliber bullet to use for a handgun, but does that mean a 9mm is not effective? I am not going to need to use a self defense shotgun from a long range, and a 20ga offers all the stopping power (plus some) that I could need.
here is a good read on some opinions on 20 vs 12:

ah, yeah... sorry, I just get a lot of flack for wanting a smaller, yet still efficient round, for personal defense from all my gun buddies
they are the type that have a 38sp as the back up back up behind their full size 45 and saiga 12 gauges for home defense. I personally believe that 9mm and 20ga, in a home defense situation, is more than enough, and if my fiancee is more comfortable shooting either if she needs to, then that is what I want to have sitting around. I see nothing wrong with 12ga, it's just not for us. haha sorry for reading your post as questioning my sanity on it 6/5/2011 12:23:30 PM |

I've always just been a 12ga person. I use 'em for 12ga for Trap/Skeet, Turkey Hunting, and 3 Gun Competitions. I've never owned a 20. My home defense is just what ever is around the house and is loaded. Usually it's my 9mm carry, I've never had a gun that I've purchased for home defense. 6/5/2011 2:18:44 PM |

Just read SOCOM is gonna start dumping SCARs from the inventory. All the COD fanboys will be depressed; but it was a gun that fixed problems that didn't need fixing. I never liked the ergonomics of it either.
Shame they're all select-fire, the civvy SCARs are way overpriced and could use the market saturation. 6/8/2011 7:29:01 PM |

I can't decide whether I want to get a red dot or an ACOG to go on my AR. I'm leaning towards the ACOG right now, because I think I'd rather have a weapon tuned for shooting accurately at 100 yards. On the other hand, I like the idea of keeping both eyes open for quick sighting down the rifle. Any opinions on which way to go? 6/8/2011 7:35:11 PM |
hkrock All American 1014 Posts user info edit post |
Elcan Specter DR will give you the best of both worlds, for the price; as would any Short-Dot/4x scope like Schmidt and Bender.
For 100 yards, an ACOG is a bit overkill. It's a 300m or better sight, with applications out to 500m on a 14.5'' barrel and out to 600m on a full-size AR.
What will be the primary purpose of this rifle? Range work? Carbine classes? I would feel completely confident running a red-dot out to 300m and have done so. I've shot out to 500m on the M4 platform with iron sights, and the same with the ACOG. I prefer the Aimpoint overall, but as with everything it's shooter preference. 6/8/2011 9:19:04 PM |

I hope you'll have better results than I have had. I recently bought some for my 795 as well and installed as instructions said (locktite as well) and took it to an Appleseed weekend. The rear sight kept coming off. I even had a couple of other people while I was there, who have more experience with that then me, try and put it on (again with more locktite) and it still kept coming off every 75 rounds or so 6/9/2011 4:05:18 PM |

Got my certs to apply for my CCH license last Saturday. This one old dude with his own gun taking the course got real mad because I shot way better than him on my marksmanship (28/30). Kept muttering how a woman shot better than him. Lulz.
Now I want to find a good public range, or a club, around here where they let you rent handguns or shotguns and experiment, maybe do skeet-shooting. I heard about the Wake County Wildlife Club.
I am also in the market for finding a co-existing place with archery for the bf.
Recommendations? Thoughts? 6/9/2011 4:35:08 PM |

PDHSC on tryon is the best/closest indoor pistol range with pistol rentals (somewhat limited selection though).
wake county range is pretty good, so i've heard.
range 37 (formerly range 1) used to be very good (not sure on rentals), so i've heard.... but it's an hour away. 6/9/2011 4:57:01 PM |

I've got a set of Tech Sights on my Ruger 10/22 and have put ~300 rounds through the gun (some of them 30 at a time rapid fire to mess with a cheap 30 round magazine I picked up) and my rear sight hasn't budged. Different gun, so maybe the 795 sights aren't as good I guess. 6/10/2011 2:01:46 PM |

It went great! I love the new Tech Sights. Overall, my accuracy is up by about 10% (did a couple appleseed comp. targets). After ~200 rounds (50 rounds being back to back mag dumps), the sights were still centered. I did use some Loctite Heavy Duty Red for automotive use and I let it cure for about 20 hours before I shot the rifle. Overall, I am very pleased. Now I just need to get a cheap foam mat for when I go prone
