I will give an example. I have a really nice $2000 pioneer navigation unit in my car. google maps and navigator run faster on my phone and recalculate with traffic light years faster than my car which is processing everything internally while my phone is at the mercy of ATT. all while other things are processing in the background 2/23/2011 4:43:00 PM |

I'm getting a new phone in 2 weeks and this is the one I want. Did you get a lapdock as well?

the webtop dock is a piece of shit. do not waste your time or money. you can actually fake your phone out into thinking you hooked one up if you root it and write some shell scripts. also, anyone know why my phone stops charging when connected to my pc at work winxp but charges fine at home on windows 7? 2/23/2011 5:42:40 PM |

Feedback after 1/2 day of light use (taught & studied most of the day). Lighter than I expected & a pretty good size (screen & body). Did not get any dock, I have a laptop & an htpc, no need. My first Android device, its pretty snappy. I like the wifi speeds, haven't really tested AT&T's network.
Charger is only like 3ft long, minor gripe. Have yet to test cameras. Will get back to you, TWW with the remainder of this review & my mediocre post-teaching reviewing skillz. 2/23/2011 6:01:51 PM |

If you want you can root and get rid of more, but I got rid of anything with ATT in the title (the radio, navigator, barcode scanner, etc.) and the yahoo app, basically the only added software that was baked into the ROM was Vlingo. Just go to settings > applications > manage applications > all and find the apps you want to get rid of, click them, and uninstall them.
It won't let you uninstall anything you need by using this method.
I wouldn't suggest you do root until you're familar with the android ecosystem, and know enough about what you should/should not do with your phone.

The atrix requires a special usb charging driver to charge via a computer. It's weird, but install Motorola Media Link, and that should give you all the drivers you need. ]2/23/2011 8:02:52 PM |

The update.zip didn't work on my phone When I tried updating it, the phone wouldn't boot correctly afterwards (would keep booting into the android system recovery screen and wouldn't recognize my SD card to retry) so I had to download the full installation. It wiped the phone, but most of what I needed was saved off anyway so it wasn't that big of a deal.
I'm digging the Froyo updates so far though 2/23/2011 10:36:17 PM |

Kind of weird that it wouldn't see the sd card in recovery. It's usually a good idea to start with a clean slate between major updates anyways and good thing about Froyo is that it automatically starts downloading your previous apps when you sign in for the first time.

whoops. http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-halts-epic-4gs-froyo-update-due-data-sd-card-issues
Quote : | "Rut ro. If you've been wondering why your Sprint Epic 4G hasn't yet received the over-the-air update to Froyo, it's because Sprint and Samsung have yanked it from the servers. Apparently a number of folks were having problems with data connectivity, or with the SD card -- or both. And while a hard-reset seemed to fix it, nobody wants to do that (Hi, mom!).
So, they pulled the update. Here's the official word:
There have been an increased number of calls into Care regarding issues with the Epic following the upgrade. As a result, the upgrade will not be pushed to more devices until a resolution for these issues is in place. The OTW update on the Samsung website will also be taken down.
Sprint and Samsung are actively working to correct these problems and release the update to all devices.
The issues being reported are related to data connectivity following the upgrade and SD card issues when attempting to access photos, music, etc. If you are experiencing these issues, a hard reset has been reported to resolve the problems. A hard reset will wipe out all the data on your device, so a backup should be done first.
That's no good, and let's hope Sprint and Sammy get their ducks in a row and get the update back up, pronto." |

Quote : | "Though it really came to a head with the recently-launched Inspire 4G, users have noticed that there really aren't many phones in AT&T's stable that deliver stellar upload speeds -- the Atrix 4G is suffering the same sub-megabit performance, as are older devices that should seemingly support HSUPA like the Samsung Captivate.
We've chatted in the past few days with a source who offers an interesting explanation: AT&T currently requires that all handsets that it sells "handshake" with the network as 3GPP Release 5 devices, the last official set of 3G specifications that lacked support for HSUPA. That feature -- also known as EDCH, or FDD Enhanced Uplink -- was added in Release 6. Though AT&T is apparently working on permitting the bulk of its handsets to handshake Release 6, presently only the iPhone 4 (and presumably all of its recent data devices like USB modems, which may also use Release 7) are allowed. Neither we, nor our source, know why this is. Our source believes that the Release 6 certification may happen within a "month or two," which would explain why some AT&T sales reps in live HSPA+ areas are telling customers that the "4G network" isn't live yet.
You can form your own conclusions as to why AT&T might be imposing this arbitrary limitation, but we do know that "enhanced" backhaul figures prominently into the company's 4G story; there may be concerns that flipping on HSUPA for everyone right now would overwhelm its legacy infrastructure. At any rate, it sounds like this could all be solved soon through a combination of network changes and possibly firmware updates for individual devices, so let's keep our fingers crossed." |

how much of a battery drain is using WiFi? Not just having it searching all the time, but actually being connected
reason I ask, I couldn't do much of anything multimedia wise on my Blackberry without wifi (no Pandora, videos, etc) but I can do all that stuff now over the 3G network so I haven't even used the Wifi much at all 2/24/2011 5:27:11 PM |

interesting...cause i figure in general 3G SHOULD use less battery than WiFi, but I have noticed the 3G coverage going in and out sometimes, so I guess if ANY service is constantly looking for a connection it will drain the battery faster 2/24/2011 5:39:34 PM |

Turn off network discovery in WiFi settings and if you're still noticing a huge drain then toggle it on when you're in range of an AP and turn it off when you're not. 3G, especially if you're in spotty coverage will always have a larger drain than the wifi radio.
At one point, when I first bought Tasker I started to set it up to poll my location every once in a while to do this all automatically, but I never finished. I mainly just used it for If Google Maps open then GPS on else turn off. 2/24/2011 5:47:45 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148446 Posts user info edit post |
so when you turn on wireless for data, it basically turns off 3G for data, but keeps 1G on for phone calls? 2/24/2011 6:19:14 PM |

Someone more knowledgeable can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the general theory is that when actually transferring data over the 3G network it requires a significant increase in power from the cell radio than if it were just sitting idle. While the wifi radio is much more efficient when transferring and often times requires a fraction of the time to sync your accounts and pull up pages.
An argument could possibly be made against constant 5 bar 3G coverage vs shoddy 802.11b coverage. Whether or not the wifi chipsets actually beef up transmission power to combat weak signals I do not know.
tl;dr Turn on WiFi when available for extended periods of time to save battery, but disabling 3G is not necessary.
ttl;dr see above post.

1) I don't know how to entirely clear the custom dictionary. 2) I don't give a fuck that 'duck' was hidden after i manually typed 'fuck' so stop showing that popup. 3) Why can't I toggle that anyway, maybe sometimes i want to just type without having to remove tge, yoi and og from my dictionary when my fingers slip.
