^^^in my experience around Raleigh after/during a snow event there are very few people on the road. Throw in multiple day school closures and rush hour traffic is non-existent, even when the roads are 100% fine.

i too don't care for winter weather events. makes work more stressful (a lot of what we do is weather dependent), fiance has to go into work pretty much no matter what. so it doesn't make for much relaxing time off for either of us.

i'm ok with a smaller snow event, no icy shit. but let it clear out quick. don't let shit get icy and linger for days. i get the appeal of snow days. but it doesn't appeal much to me since it usually doesn't translate to relaxing days off.

Freezing pipes can be managed as long as you're home during the weather event.

^^^high speed winds seem pretty rare in the southeast during a winter (frozen precip) storm. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't even remember the last time that was a thing. Though maybe you have a pretty low threshold for what you consider high speed winds.

^^^Some people in our 'hood had issues with their pipes freezing in the crawlspace.

We shut our vents, let water drip, and insulate the spickets. That seems to do the trick. One of our air handlers is in the crawlspace, and our aux. heat has been running almost constantly, so that probably warms the air up a little but under there.

But having temps reach down into the single digits and highs no warmer than 29, 30, I suspect there isn't much that some folks can do to prevent it.

Neuservrat and petejames made comments about severe weather, which includes hurricanes and other high wind events. Still, 30 to 40mph winds can be common with your typical nor'easter. While it doesn't sound like much, the added surface area of ice covering tree limbs and power lines makes those wind speeds more dangerous than during other storm events.

Yeah I should have specified with the vents closed. I also have an air handler in the crawlspace...I figure it stays decently warm down there, but haven't tested that theory. Wonder if I even need those spigot insulator things...

^I have the same crawlspace setup and my outdoor spigot froze. Luckily I have PEX tubing and caught it soon enough that the frozen part only progressed a little way into the crawlspace (like maybe 6"?).I'm not sure if it would have kept freezing all the way to the primary waterline or not (because it was noticeably warmer under there compared to outside). I was able to just cut the line and add a press fitting ball valve and shut all water off to the spigot.

I'll probably end up going with a frost-free spigot and if we ever have a cold snap like that again will just shut water off to the spigot and drain that part of the line.

i think this last storm was pretty rare; usually when it's that cold it's dry, most of our winter weather storms seem to happen when temps are closer to freezing or hovering right at freezing

i drive a work vehicle and when it snowed a couple weeks back i called out thinking i prob wouldnt get paid that day, 20% of my coworkers decided they would still work. management decided to pay the people who called out and told us not to tell the 20% about it. hah
