Couple of nuggets from watching ESPN last night: They talked about it on PTI and Wilbon made the case for LOIC. It was also a topic on The Experts on ESPNU and most of those clowns talked about UNC this year...then Forde chimed in with something like "he better win a lot of games this year. mushroom cloud, its over at the end of the year." (actually used the words "mushroom cloud") 10/13/2010 9:05:35 AM |

For the record, I think rallydurham has gone off the deep end with the trolling, but people need to stop being so naive about college athletics. Players get paid. Players take improper benefits. Schools and agents are willing to give it to them. The clean programs are the programs that don't get caught.
I try not to speculate on certain players beyond what I've seen with my own two eyes because you never know, but chances are any big-time recruit has taken benefits. You just have to hope everyone within your institutional family is kept happy and doesn't rat.

It was definitely an early 90s Maxima. I have a clear memory of that night and handing out donuts to everyone. A crowd gathered at the Weisiger-Brown building, and then the student body president, Tony Caravano, came up to my roommate and asked him for help transporting some Krispy Kreme donuts back. We went to the Krispy Kreme and told them we needed X amount of donuts to take to the fans waiting on the team to return. The manager told us to go around back. We went around back and he said, "don't worry about paying anything. This is for the fans." The SBP told him that he greatly appreciated it and he would mention the store to all the fans before handing them out. We loaded up the two cars with what had to be 1000 or more donuts. After handing out the donuts it took about another hour for the team to arrive. 30 minutes before someone yelled out, "they're at the airport." The look on the players faces when they arrived was awesome. They were so surprised. After they went into the W-B building the crowd started chanting for Julius Hodge, but he wasn't coming out. Someone saw him sneak out the side of the building and yelled "he's over here." Then the crowd rushed over and surrounded his beat up Maxima and demanded a speech before he left. My roommate handed him a megaphone. After his speech the crowd began chanting "FOUR MORE YEARS!"
That was one of the biggest athletics highlights and just one of my fondest memories from my time at State. 10/13/2010 10:04:38 AM |

From HD's top three games of Week 7:
Quote : | "2. North Carolina at Virginia: Virginia has won four straight and UNC hasn't won in Charlottesville since 1981, losing 14 straight times. North Carolina holds a 56-54-4 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1892 but the two schools differ on the series record. Why? Because of the game in 1956 that North Carolina forfeited for using an ineligible player. You know what they say, history repeats itself. " |

Erik Highsmith on player responsibility Paige-Moss thoughts on dismissed teammates UNC teammates react to losing Austin, Little and Quinn Print this story E-mail Blogpost

commentsPOST VIEW Marvin Austin, Greg Little and Robert Quinn have all played their last down of Carolina football.
On Tuesday several of their "former" teammates commented on the dismissals and the loss of the three talented players. Some of the views seemed pretty straight laced, like Erik Highsmith's.
"Off the field we're individuals so you gotta take care of business and do it smart. Don't do anything stupid," Highsmith said. "It's their fault, but I wish it never happened. But it's their responsibility and they gotta face the consequences."
Well said. No excuses. Blame no one but yourself for taking gifts.
Those guys clearly didn't handle their business, and they provided false information about it. Better yet, let's call it what it is. They "lied" about it.
Donte Paige-Moss' comments made me raise my eye brow. And now I'm thinking that on top of all the new policies concerning agent contact, media training might be another thing to look at.
Paige-Moss was asked by WRAL's Jason Jennings if he thought Austin, Little and Quinn may have put themselves before the team.
"But who doesn't? We're human," Paige-Moss said. "All of us have selfish mindsets sometimes. They got caught. If 10 people who rob a bank, the only person that get in trouble is the person who get caught."
Ehhhh??
Immediately it sounds like he's saying there are others on the team that were in the wrong but just didn't get caught. I don't think he meant it that way, but it sounded that way.
Does he mean that there are a lot of other cheaters around the nation that just haven't been pegged yet? That's still not something I would want to highlight right now. All I took from it is that 1) Everyone's selfish sometimes, and 2) You're only in trouble if you get caught.
This was a perfect chance to answer the final questions about your "banned" teammates, say something like 'They screwed up, they messed up, it's unfortunate', and then move on. What you don't want to do is bring up a bank robber analogy.
Sure, we can all be a little selfish sometimes. But for a lot of us selfishness comes in not sharing a large pizza, hogging the XBox or not donating enough to charity.
The selfishness we're talking about with Quinn, Little and Austin was a clear case of guys knowingly breaking the rules of their sport. These guys combined to accept anywhere from $20,000 to $23,000 worth of lavish jewelry, travel and other benefits.
Paige-Moss is just a sophomore in college and he may have been confused in trying to get his point out. I don't know him, he may be a great guy. He just picked a bad analogy at a really bad time.
I'd tell him to pop in a good bank robber movie, like Public Enemies or Point Break. Everyone eventually gets caught.....that or they get shot.
Just listen to how Highsmith did it and choose your words carefully next time." |

i think for most head coaches they have plausible deniability aka the Mob.
I think certain head coaches its just understood "i'm not gonna ask you how you got player X or keep player Y etc. but damn if it isn't beautiful"
I guarantee you that whatever this Josh Luchs dude says, the coaches know it better than anyone i.e. how it all works. the thing is when they ask Blake how did Butch monitor you and they ask Butch "how do you monitor your coaches?", the NCAA can determine how much "atmosphere of Compliance" is intended to be established. 10/13/2010 2:08:43 PM |

I dont think he was taking money. I figured it was one of those circumstances where he got a loan and/or financing from a car dealership based on the fact that they knew he would get a big paycheck in a couple months and would easily be able to pay it back. I have no idea if thats really what happened, or if its even "ncaa legal" to do something like that, but I figured thats a little loophole players could use in the weeks/months leading up to the draft10/13/2010 2:44:03 PM |
