FWIW, my friend purchased a hi-point 9mm a few years ago and has never had one mechanical issue with it. and he's a damn good shot with it too. the only bad things he noted were: 1) ugly 2) grip is pretty thick) 3) grip is somewhat slick

Now, I'd never recommend purchasing one, but I feel it's fair to hear all sides of a story, than just the bad one.

I took my CCW class yesterday, put all the rounds in the 9/10 rings. Charlies class is good, relaxed and informative atmosphere. Got confused on the written test a couple times because of how much I have been studying the new bill so I had to stop and think a couple times if it was a current or future law. 100% on that though. Definitely recommend.

so far I haven't been able to find the regulations outlining the range qualification part of the class. not really worried about it, I was just kind of annoyed yesterday.

what are you guys using for safes? I need recommendations for a good long gun safe. doesn't have to be huge... just big enough for a shotgun, maybe an AR, and with a shelf for pistols and ammo

get a Drake safe. they are 1/4" steel all around, not just the door. guy makes them in Roxboro. you'll be supporting a somewhat local dude, if you're into that stuff. they are excellent safes and i'll be getting one as soon as i move to a house it'll fit in.

buy the biggest safe you can afford, not what you think you will need room for. you'll end up using a shelf or two for family heirlooms, documents, and other things you don't plan on. You'll also end up adding firearms to your collection as the years go by, and the safe will last forever.

I have a liberty safe that is well built, but I think the dials inside have gotten jarred 1-2 digits off from being moved a couple of times. I plan on replacing it with a digital keypad lock at some point.

Get a walther P22 if you want the interchangable grips, or snag a Ruger Mk III or 22/45 if you want a heavier gun. The Rugers seem to have cheaper magazines, but are larger, the Walthers are a good training gun as they have the same controls as the Walther 380/9mm/40 etc guns do, thus its an easy, feels the same type transition to a larger gun later.

Will second the MkIII and 22/45. I got my 22/45 at the beginning of the year and absolutely love it. No problems yet other than a few instances of dead ammo not firing(bulk Remington).

I have around 3000 rounds through it so far and I still love it!

Taurus 809...worthwhile, or not?

I'm itching to buy a gun and I've decided that I want a 9mm pistol, just because I want one. I don't have a lot of personal knowledge to draw from as far a semi-auto pistols go. Not gonna carry concealed. Money matters, but not too much.

The PT series is made very well for what they cost, and I put many, many rounds through a 24/7 Pro and a Millenium Pro without any issues. They are very well built in my experience and have all the ergonomic features one would need in a gun that sees pretty frequent use.

My only negative opinion of Taurus in general stems from one issue that was badly mishandled and left me with a really cool looking paperweight for the better part of a year. I loaned the 24/7 out once and the person broke a plastic firing pin spring carrier while cleaning it. Should have been NBD, like a $5 part they just mail to me, but it took their CS over 6 months to locate and send me a replacement, and even that involved quite a bit of confusion and runaround.

Even if you take the class, the sheriffs office takes 30 to 90 days to get it to you. You will not have a CC permit by August. I just turned in my paperwork today and counting on receiving it sometime in October.

I've had a few PMs today asking about the class so I'll go ahead and post it here. My next classes will be this Saturday, July 16th and then Sunday, August 7th. After that, the range will be closed for a month. I normally charge $70/person but am still offering $60 to ncsu/tww people. Classes start at 10am and run until around 7:30pm. I don't know much about the 809, but I love my 24/7... it was the first pistol I ever bought, and still one of my go to pistols (and a favorite of most people I bring out just learning to fire a gun- that and my ruger 22/45)

I have heard some bad stuff about their customer service, but also some good stuff. Just take care of it, and it won't be a big deal. The only thing I would change on mine is get a custom guide rod made for it (it is plastic stock, and some companies can make you a metal one for cheap).

all said and done, it is great bang for the buck (no pun intended), and while not the most popular brand, a solid brand IMO. Hell, the 24/7 apparently narrowly lost out for a military contract to be one of the main service carry weapons - which is the reason it was made in the first place

summary:
he was accustomed to a thumb-release retention holster + glock, but he was wearing a blackhawk serpa (index finger-release retention) + kimber 1911

he says he tried releasing the gun with his thumb but ended up taking the gun off "safe", he then pressed the proper release and pulled the gun out, and (somehow) ended up pulling the trigger

doesn't the retention on a serpa require your finger to be up on the slide in order to get the gun free?

Eventually they just ordered more 92s.

From a regular Army standpoint, you only really see pistols in the hands of support personnel and gunners assigned to the M240.

In SOCOM you have several other options to choose from, so they weren't too worried about the final result.

Also ^^The SERPA is poorly designed and many instructors won't allow them in their class. Unfortunately it is priced as such that many beginners have them, but their mechanics work on a much more advanced level than most novices are prepared for thus: negligent discharges.

Buddy of mine got hit with a 9mm ricochet today while at PDHSC. Hit him in the shoulder and will probably leave a helluva bruise.

Anywho, looks like I've FINALLY got my .40 reload recipe down.

5 shots- 7 yards
5 shots - 15 yards
5 shots - 25 yards





The 3 outliers are definitely human error. I made two of them at the 15 yard line (one I pulled the trigger and the other I anticipated recoil). I can't explain the lefty, but I'm sure it was me. The other 12 shots make for a very nice group.
