If they're going to do the shootout, I'd prefer a 3 pts for winning regulation or OT, 2 for winning a shootout, 1 for losing shootout, 0 for losing in regulation or OT. Teams are still playing conservatively just to get into the OT sometimes, and this would probably eliminate that. 11/10/2005 2:06:52 PM |

i would approve of a system that allows only a certain amount of standings points per game. I dont like how some games have a worth of 2 points and some 3 11/10/2005 2:58:06 PM |

yeah, a Win is a Win, who cares how you got it. You should get the same number of points no matter how you win 11/10/2005 11:09:34 PM |

I agree that its really confusing about how some games 3 pts are given out and some 2 I wish they would do you win 2pt (OT or reg) you lose nothin that way players would work harder to get the win 11/11/2005 12:10:43 AM |

Let me simplify:
As it stands now:
Win in Regulation, OT, or Shootout: 2 points Loss in OT or Shootout: 1 point Loss in Regulation: 0 points
The way it probably should be:
Win in Regulation: 3 points Win in OT or Shootout: 2 points Loss in OT or Shootout: 1 point Loss in Regulation: 0 points 11/11/2005 12:58:05 AM |

During a normal non-OT game, there are only 2 points up for grabs. Once it crosses into OT, 3 points are now available (2 for winner 1 for loser).11/11/2005 9:36:01 AM |

We've played our share of real teams. And even though Florida is on a 6 game skid, if we don't take them seriously there will be 2 streaks broken tonight. I have no doubt we'll try to dig ourselves into a hole that we seem to enjoy climbing out of.11/11/2005 10:57:53 AM |

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason that there are no games worth 3-point to a single team is to keep that 100-point mark a defining milestone (and avoid having teams with 120+ points). For example, there were 10 teams that reached 100+ points in the 2003-04 season. If a regulation win was worth 3 points, there would have been quite a few teams with over 120 points, and even more teams with over 100 points that wouldn't have reached the playoffs (whereas each team that scored 100+ points made it into the playoffs). Yes, there was no shootout so there's no telling how that would have ended up, but work with me here
This is something that will probably come up in the next CBA talks (this one's only going to be around for 6 years, after all) if fans complain enough.

I would hope that's not the reason. If they tinker with the game itself to produce a (probable) shit-ton of 100+ point scorers (relatively speaking of course) they shouldn't have qualms about a reasonable standing system that may produce more than the 1 - 3 teams that typically reach that 100 pt position.11/11/2005 1:36:50 PM |

3pts for a regulation win would be about as useful as making halfcourt shots in bball worth 4. 11/11/2005 1:40:12 PM |
NCSUAli All American 2554 Posts user info edit post |
Personally, I'm fine with the way it is now. Yes, they brought in the shootout, but that was simply for there to be a defined winner each game, not to add more point value to the game itself...I like it the way it is. Sure, there isn't any incentive to winning in regulation versus OT or SO, but 2 points is 2 points. If you're playing a team in your division/conference, having to go to OT/SO is, in itself, a sort of punishment if you win, seeing that the other team still gets 1 point, with that 1 point potentially coming back and biting the team in its ass later on. 11/11/2005 2:08:34 PM |

You know, a friend of mine was asking me why I never watch Canes games and now, in watching this one, I remember why.
I can't stand that one dude who is beyond homerism for the Canes.

love from si.com, from the top 5 suprises of the NHL this year:
5. The first-place Carolina Hurricanes
This team entered the season with more question marks than the Riddler's costume. Where they found the answers had to surprise even their most ardent fans.
Rookie Cam Ward and Swiss vet Martin Gerber have formed a dependable tandem in goal. The power play has hummed along at a stout 22.4 percent, third-best in the league.
And sophomore center Eric Staal, who just turned 21, was scoring at a Gretzky-like pace of two points per game, and trailed only Peter Forsberg in the Art Ross chase.
Going into Friday's game at Florida, the 'Canes were riding a franchise-record eight-game winning streak. More telling than the wins, however, were the ways they found to get the job done.
In five of those eight games, Carolina trailed by two or more goals before clawing its way to victory with grit and determination. Included in that streak was a 3-2 win over Ottawa on Oct. 24, one of just two Senators defeats thus far.
It's too early ... to declare the Hurricanes as Stanley Cup contenders, especially with so little experience in so many pivotal roles, but Carolina has emerged as a team to watch in 2007 and beyond. 11/12/2005 1:34:56 PM |
