He has won everywhere he has been although he did not have a great year this year. But come on he was coaching at Depaul and did beat Wake Forset and Syracuse at the end of the year. I think he would be a good choice. 4/3/2006 3:43:04 PM |

Is Rick Barnes really *that* good?
He wasn't all that at Clemson, and without 3-4 future NBA picks on his Texas squad (and having a huge monopoly of recruiting within Texas since he gets all the 4 & 5 star players from Texas), would he be that impressive?
Can't say I like Barnes all that much... 4/3/2006 4:20:17 PM |

Quote : | "He is a native of Long Beach, California and a 1968 graduate of Cal State Long Beach, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education. Montgomery continued his education at Colorado State University. He received his Masters Degree from Colorado State in physical education in 1976" |

keep in mind that even the great coaches have difficulty making it in the tournament. Roy williams went 8 years at Kansas without making past the sweet 16 except for one of those years when he went to the elite 8. And in 3 of those years he only made it to the second round 4/3/2006 4:25:12 PM |

Barnes has taken 3 programs to top 10 rankings.
His first year at Clemson they were labeled preseason as "The worst team in ACC history". They didn't have a single player on the roster taller than 6'6". He took them to the NIT, and I believe the NCAA's by his 3rd year.
He's done an exceptional job wherever he's gone. Not sure he's my #1... he's the logical fit, but I don't think he's that "elite" coach like a Calipari would be. However, if we were looking to Calipari, he may leave in 2-3 years.
Barnes would be a great hire. His programs are always good 4/3/2006 4:26:27 PM |

^^^because he fucking won at STANFORD
He doesnt have a great tournament resume, but it was said earlier....if you can win at stanford where your recruits actually have to be accepted to the school, you can probably win anywhere(in college).

Updated coaching search...becuase I'm nice
Quote : | "After posting our story that listed several potential coaching candidates, we realized that one coach left off certainly makes a lot of sense: Mike Montgomery.
Currently the head coach of the NBA's Golden State Warriors, Montgomery made his mark at Stanford, where he turned the Pac-10 school into a west coast power. His recruiting was limited due to Stanford's high academic standards, but all Montgomery did was win ballgames and is regarded as one of the best X's and O's coaches in the business.
Montgomery compiled an impressive 547-244 (.692) overall record in 18 years at Stanford (1986-2004) and eight seasons at the University of Montana (1978-1986). He boasts an even more impressive 25 winning seasons in his 26 years as a head coach at both Stanford and Montana.
His teams made it 18 teams into postseason play in the last 20 years (1985-04), 12 times advancing to the NCAA Tournament (1988-89, 1991-92, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04 seasons), six times his teams received bids to the NIT (1984-85, 1985-86, 1987-88, 1989-90, 1990-91, 1993-94), and his Cardinal team won it all in the 1991 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). During the 1997-98 season, Stanford advanced to the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio.
We're hearing that he is high on Lee Fowler's list of potential candidates, and may have actually been suggested by former AD Les Robinson. Montgomery underachieved this season with Golden State and might be looking to head back to the college ranks. However, his age (59) should certainly be a concern and he will likely be considered a short-term fix if he is chosen as head coach.
As it stands now, Rick Barnes is the No. 1 target, and all media outlets are assuming the same thing, Barnes won't come to NC State. However, we believe a financial package is being put together that will certainly catch Barnes' attention. Currently he makes 1.3 million at Texas, and we're hearing NC State will make a competive offer to try to land the Hickory native. Texas has the resources to match nearly any offer, but at that point Barnes will likely choose where he feels would be the best fit.
One thing to consider is that there are rumors going around that LaMarcus Aldridge, Daniel Gibson, and PJ Tucker could all go pro. Should that happen, Texas would have lost all 5 starters from last season.
If Barnes turns down an eventual offer from NC State, we wouldn't be surprised if he recommends Frank Haith, an ex-Barnes assistant, for the job. The Miami head coach is building a rising program in Florida, and he is an outstanding recruiter. He has recruited six McDonald's All-American's including Rodney Rodgers (Wake Forest, 1990), Jerald Brown (Texas A&M, 1995), Brad Buckman (Texas, 2002), LaMarcus Alridge (Texas, 2004), Daniel Gibson (Texas, 2004) and Michael Williams (Texas, 2004).
He is lobbying HARD for the job and has indicated he would accept the position if offered. We have heard there has been some unofficial contact with Haith to gauge his interest, and it should be known that he is very passionate about the job. Haith grew up a huge NC State fan, and would be a 'high-reward' hire. Should he succeed, don't expect him to go anywhere else because NC State is where he wants to be, based on everything we've heard.
With that being said, Haith should be considered a 'B-tier' coach at this point, meaning coaches such as Barnes, Calipari, Wright, or possibly Montgomery would have to say no before Haith received heavy consideration.
We will be posting daily updates, so stay tuned for more!" |

I'm pretty sure Stanford athletes have to be accepted at Stanford to play sports... I don't think they allow academic exceptions.
The only reason they win the directors cup every year is becuase they have about 30 more bullshit sports teams that no other school in the nation has
