it's like when knuckleballers get 4 strikeouts in an inning because of passed balls
except, you know, immensely more historic

of course Leyland is being classy about it because Major League Baseball would bring the hammer down on him if he wasn't. MLB always protects the umpires.
I think you may now see a major clamoring for expansion of instant replay in MLB. 6/2/2010 9:26:53 PM |

Any league protects their officials, but not completely blindly...I think MLB makes some kind of statement about how Joyce missed the call, but I don't see them changing any stats 6/2/2010 9:32:12 PM |

If you were an ump and there was a controversial call to end a perfect game... wouldn't you in this case, side with the throw? You do that and a bad call makes history for good and not bad. I understand Joyce is human and he made a bad call and feels bad about it, but that's not what this is about. 6/2/2010 9:59:54 PM |

Just more and more evidence that having umpires is a big mistake. They are no longer needed. We have the technology to remove them from the game, and doing so would be a huge improvement. 6/3/2010 12:08:00 AM |

They played a clip of the ump talking to a radio station and maaaaannn did he sound distraught. He said over and over how sorry he was for taking history away from that kid and how he blew it. He sounded really sincere. I kind of feel bad for the guy now. 6/3/2010 12:39:09 AM |

i think MLB's front office should just say fuck it and reverse the call and give the guy the no-hitter. that'll never happen though.

MLB channel guys also talked to a guy that reviews plays for errors/hits/etc and he said no deal. The only thing they would change is if the play was an error they could review it and give an error on the play and make it a no hitter. But he said there was no error on the play. Then Mitch Williams said something smartass about an error on the ump. ha 6/3/2010 12:59:02 AM |

MLB should do something unprecedented and do the right thing here: reverse the call. This is a 100 percent unique situation. I would want them to reverse any blatantly bad call in the ninth inning of a no-hitter/perfect game, but I recognize that's just not doable most of the time. But the thing that makes a possible reversal actually justifiable is that with two outs in the inning and the next batter getting out anyway, it wouldn't change anything. 6/3/2010 1:13:53 AM |
