Since the 8900 has Wifi, I recommend downloading the Blackberry App World application which has links to a ton of other apps

Some I'd recommend are the AP News app, Transclick, Pandora, Google Mobile App, Radio Companion, NFL Mobile Live (might be Sprint exclusive, not sure), and Weatherbug

Word

Does anyone have experience with the wi-fi? I'm pretty excited as I get terrible service at home with any provider. If the call quality is decent, I'll probably end up adding the unlimited option at some point.

To my knowledge, the wifi only affects any data transmitted, like web browsing, email, etc, but doesnt affect phone/radio reception

im looking to get a blackberry and i am pretty close to getting the Curve 8900 but the lack of 3G is scaring me away and holding me up. Is 3G really that important? I am not a huge cell phone fanatic type person, but speed/quality is important. I have no patience.

Go 'head and get the 8900 or spend more $$$ and get the Bold, which has 3g?

I mean, do you do any web browsing? 3G really makes a big difference.

Are you going to be doing a lot of web browsing? Do you live in a 3G zone?

For me, the answer was no to both questions, so I went with the 8900.

i live in cary

i occasionally check MLB scores, i occasionally check e-mail, i occasionally check NCAA Football and Basketball scores....

that's about all the web browsing i do on a phone. e-mail and score updates.

You could easily live without 3G.

I've had my 8900 for almost 24 hours now, I live in bumfuck and the browsing speed has been just fine with the default browser. I downloaded the Bolt Browser and Opera Mini, Bolt is super fast and the pages are more readable, but I'm not crazy about the way it renders a lot of pages.

Other apps I've been playing with:

Google Mobile app / GMail / Google Maps are all awesome.
Slacker is great but the audio quality is sometime pretty shitty.
The Radio Companion app is maybe my favorite so far. It allows you to listen to streaming radio and view playlists. It lists WKNC as playable but it won't load for some reason. Most every other station is perfect with no buffering issues.
ScoreMobile that I mentioned above is excellent.
Facebook app seems pointless when the mobile Facebook site works great. I also noticed that Facebook syncs with my contact list to display contact pictures and work information, but it doesn't recognize some of my contacts.
Weatherbug and Viigo are sort of disappointing.

there are a ton of weather apps...i had one i liked but you couldnt change the temps from celsius to fahrenheit...the thing i like about weatherbug is having a home screen icon with the current temp, and the daily high and low, just from scrolling over it

Yeah, I like that. Sometimes it's pretty slow to update, though. I have to manually refresh the app to get the icon data to update.

[Edited on June 14, 2009 at 10:19 PM. Reason : the hover info on ScoreMobile is awesome too]

not sure what you did to fix it, but jvm/uncaught exception errors generally require a wipe/reinstall. that's the easiest way to do it anyway, assuming you have desktop manager installed and actually use it.

I wouldn't think it'd take that long unless you have your phone absolutely loaded down with crap since a blackberry runs through everything while it's booting.

if you were forced to get a blackberry on sprint which one would it be and why - i'll be getting one for work in 2 weeks but i'm not sure if i'll have a say in which one or not yet - if i do i want to have an answer

alternatively - has anyone used blackberry connect on windows mobile - is it basically the exact same as having a blackberry (as far as messaging goes)

anybody tried the Y! Fan Professional app? They had it on BlackBerry App World but I don't see it now

Supposed to be able to manage all your Yahoo! fantasy sports teams...I'm having some kind of issue behind a firewall though...but supposedly theres going to be a new release in the next week or so that allows you to bypass a firewall and go through the regular BB browser...app looked cool though...change your lineups, add/drop players, trade players, and if you bought stat tracker you can get up to the minute stats of your players

^^^ The 8330 is probably your best option. Less bulky and has a camera. If they use direct connect there's the 8350i that comes with wifi and everything. Too bad they're not waiting til later this summer. The tour(replacement for 8830 world edition) will be coming out and it's supposed to be pretty nice.

Anybody think Ill have trouble walking into a Verizon store on the 13th, and nabbing one of these? Or is it the type of popular device that might get sold out?

The demand will probably be fairly high but I doubt there will be a shortage. There was a lot of hype around the device on internet forums so it should sell well.

I would go early to the verizon stores, worst case order it online before dark and get free overnight shipping for the next day, you will get it a little after lunch.

i just bumped the messenger thread in chit chat

anyone else using messenger 5.0? it got leaked over the weekend. i've been running it on a curve 8310. i don't like how "big" it is; there's less lines of chat on the screen at a time. the barcode thing is neat, although i don't really need it. i guess we'll have to wait to see how the promixity feature works in a final version

Installed the 5.0.0.140 leak for the storm and it seems pretty good. The facebook app doesn't work and it seems that message alerts don't work with 3rd party themes. 5.0 now has tabbed browsing with the stock BB browser and the animations for opening/closing apps are pretty nice. Also looks like the storm 2 is nearing production and should be released around november.

just got a tour at work, can definitely recognize more fluid functionality to the UI i assume due to more processing power....much higher screen resolution and brighter colors. probably kills the battery quicker but so far it's not terrible, only marginally worse than my curve, which is my personal phone

i still am not sold on the storm, which my brother has and ive played with on occasion. maybe storm 2 will get me to switch. im due for an upgrade on the curve in oct

does anyone know how to make my pin messages make a beep sound when my ring profile is set to normal on my curve? all mine does is flash the new message light, no sound

but if its on vibrate, it will vibrate the phone like any other new message

Should be able to select ringtones/alerts from the sound profile and change it there.

And I've grown to like the storm especially with the newer OS's. I don't think I could go back to a pure resistive or capacitive touch screen.

^^In Messages / Options / General Options, set "Make PIN Messages Level 1" to Yes. Then edit your Profile, and select the desired sound for Level 1 Messages, both In and Out of Holster.
