I agree.... focus on the line.... that will make even an average RB look good (deAngelo / Toefield) and that is the only proven method to helping our slightly above average franchise QB perform well....

should we take an offensive lineman or defensive lineman with our first pick? personally i think it depends on the talent left with our pick...if we can get a beast defensive lineman and a beast offensive lineman i'd prolly pick the beast defensive lineman

I have a mancrush on T Holt the younger. Dude was a kick blocking beast back in the day. He would make some devastating hits too. Man, I loved the football team then.

I will take that pick up of T. Holt. I would not be opposed to taking Morgan if he is there in the 3rd. Be nice to have that depth. But we do have glaring holes on that OL/DL where the beef is.

I think the possibility of getting Morgan hinges to a large degree on whether or not they trade up in the first round to get the top 1 or 2 tackle.

back when they let him climb up the backs of the linemen and jump at the kicker.

they changed that rule now, and I bet we haven't blocked 6 punts since then. I think Holt had that many in his career here.

I like Kevin Smith, the RB out of UCF. He'll make a nice 3rd round pick.

I like either of those guys in the 3rd, possibly Tashard Choice or Peyton Hills from Arkansas in the 4th - he's an RB/FB hybrid

Ray Rice and Chris Johnson both have the same approximate dimensions as D-Will, which mean they don't compliment him as well. Though I don't think there's any way we pass on Johnson if he makes it to us in the 3rd.

Sportsnation mock draft is retarded. It had us drafting Keith Rivers even though Ryan Clady is still on the board.

Decent article....I can't help but agree that it all hinges on the OL.

What? Terrence Holt wasn't playing back in the 40's and 50's. That rule has been around forever. He was just very good at timing his jumps.

And he set the NCAA record for blocked kicks with 7 blocked FG's and 4 blocked punts.

Not exactly. The rules regarding jumping up and blocking kicks were changed the year after Holt left I believe. Previously, one could jump up onto the backs of other players to fall over the Line blocking the kick. Terrence was a master of that on FG attempts. The new rules do not allow that.

That rule change significantly decreased the number of kick blocks.

got a new OL

" The Carolina Panthers have signed unrestricted free agent guard Milford Brown from the St. Louis Rams, the team announced Friday.

Brown, 27, has appeared in 48 games with 43 starts in six seasons with Houston, Arizona and St. Louis. Signed as a free agent by St. Louis during training camp in 2007, he started a career-high 15 games for the Rams last year, making nine starts at left guard, four at right tackle and two at right guard.

Originally selected in the sixth round of the supplemental draft from Florida State by Houston in 2002, Brown (6-5, 330 pounds) saw action in 19 games with 16 starts over four seasons with the Texans. He signed with Arizona as an unrestricted free agent in 2006 and played in 13 games with 12 starts for the Cardinals.

A native of Montgomery, AL, Brown was a two-time first-team Junior College All-American at East Mississippi. He transferred to Florida State prior to his junior year and started all 12 games at guard for the Seminoles in 2001. Milford entered the supplemental draft after the NCAA ruled him ineligible for his senior season because he had exhausted all of his eligibility by enrolling briefly at Alabama State before attending East Mississippi."

Sounds like a nice pick-up. Experience and size. I like that we are beefing up the O-Line through FA.

looks like they're taking the "pick up a bunch of O-linemen and a few are bound to pan out" strategy.

on a related note, it seemed to me that they brought Davidson last year in b/c he ran the zone blocking scheme, which needed quick, athletic O linemen to be successful (which we had at the time).....it seems like they're blowing that approach up, so are they going to force davidson to change his philisophy, or try to incorporate these guys into a zone scheme? Neither makes much sense to me....if they're making him change his approach, he becomes a liability. If they try to force square pegs into round holes, they're not utilizing the best abilities of thier players.

i dont think this has been posted either

The Carolina Panthers have signed guard Toniu Fonoti, the team announced Wednesday. Fonoti, 26, has played in 40 games with 33 starts in five seasons with San Diego, Minnesota and Miami. He was signed by Atlanta last offseason but was released during training camp.

Selected in the second round (39th overall) from Nebraska by San Diego in 2002, Fonoti (6-4, 350 pounds) played in 15 games with 14 starts and earned all-rookie honors from Football Digest. He spent the 2003 season on injured reserve with a foot injury but returned the next year to start 16 games, garnering first-team All-Pro honors from SportsIllustrated.com and being named to USA Today's All-Joe Team.

Fonoti split the 2005 campaign between San Diego and Minnesota. He started the first two games for the Chargers before being traded to the Vikings, where he started one game prior to being placed on injured reserve with a groin injury. In 2006, Fonoti appeared in six games for Miami after being released by Tampa Bay in the final roster cutdown.

you missed the point. we know the rule changed after he left. The point is that it had NOT changed for the 50 years prior and T. Holt still set records for blocked kicks. You can't discount that he set records under the same rules that thousands of players had played on before.

seems like we need a modified zone blocking scheme with a mixture of speed and stregth, cause the problem last year was that our linemen couldnt hold on pass protection

^with the recent moves, it looks like they're moving toward that, if not to an all out power blocking scheme.

why worry about it? best case scenario is that we have a decent OL this year - no way we pull all these new guys together this year for a good OL.

Just hope that our renewed WR corps can consistently bail Jake out when he is pressured quickly.. only that will open up the rungame because I doubt we will be able to run on anyone to start games this year...

Thats what I like to hear...Jake throwing the ball. And it will be a combination of the receiving core actually catching and holding on the ball and the the decent O-line play that will make the running game look good and open it up. Last year, we had one WR that could get open and catch the ball, and no QB, so of course our running game looked like shit. If Jake stays healthy, and the WR's continue to hold on the ball and just be a consistent threat to make first downs, defenses will back up and not stack the line. They knew we were going to run 97% of the time.

Just my rambling thoughts...

no longer continuously going 3 & out will help keep the D fresh as well

Did not think of that...but definitely a good point. Our D would play a whole games worth in the first half. Def keeping out D fresh, will help out.

I'm wondering why, despite the lack of depth at D-line, they're not bringing back Jordan Carsten.

from everything i've heard over the last few months on local sports radio, it sounds like jake's recovery is going well, though slow...but you dont want to rush back from an injury like this...i just know some baseball players with this surgery havent come back the same as before but all ive heard about jake is he could possibly be a little stronger than before...i'm optimistic

The good thing about throwing a football is that the motion is natural to the mechanics of the body

Throwing a baseball is not...your elbow is twisted 90 degrees on every pitch

Thats why so many pitches have arm problems, and for quarterbacks their much less common
