^^^^^

It wouldn't matter if the treadmill were going 1,000 mph. The angular acceleration of the wheels + the resistive force of wheel friction would have to equal the thrust of the plane.

If the treadmill is going at a constant speed then the only resistive force is friction, which is negligible until the treadmill is traveling at incredible speed. The only way to hold the plane still is to ACCELERATE the wheels via the treadmill at a TREMENDOUS rate. If someone could get the the following information I can calculate what it would take (angular acceleration of wheels, linear acceleration of treadmill, etc.) to hold the plane still on level ground:

- Number of wheels
- Moment of inertia of each wheel about axis of rotation
- Radius of each wheel
- Thrust generated by engine (either prop. or jet)

You will find this number to be tremendous compared to the actual values of a plane accelerating on a stationary runway (which I can calculate given the mass of the plane in addition to the above information).

Yeah, I imagine that, compared cheap car tires, airplane tires probably have a lot more safety margin built into them relative to what is normal. Otherwise you'd probably hear about a lot more on-runway accidents during rushed landings, inclement weather, etc.

Sort of. I don't think the wheels or bearings are going to like being pushed to 5-10 times the speeds they were engineered for. But yeah, the treadmill force isn't the limiting factor here, it's the landing gear/wheels/tires failing due to excessive rotation. As was pointed out, 2x normal probably isn't going to do anything bad to them during this short test.

from the preview video on youtube, they indicated that to try it with a full sized plane they were going to do something like drag a tarp behind a truck.
Theoretically, this can provide the same effect, but to satisfy the idiots skeptics, it's going to require a prohibitively long tarp....

i know what it is

but the myth isn't plane flies on a tarp....

also, just to be anal, they're not really tracking the speed of the tarp vs the speed of the plane...
