Quote : | "You do not foul. We got the ball with five seconds on the clock. You do call the timeout." |
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.....
There was a five second differential,AT THE MOST, between the game clock and the shot clock. You KNEW Duke was going to shoot the ball with two seconds, AT THE MOST, left on the shot clock. So when the shot is missed (hopefully) we have six seconds, again AT THE MOST, to do the following two scenarios:
1st scenario:
- rebound the ball and fight off opposing team's rebounders - outlet the ball to someone - dribble all the way up the court - somehow get up a contested 3-point shot
2nd scenario:
- rebound the ball and fight off opposing team's rebounders - call timeout - inbound the ball against Duke's tough man-to-man D (it wouldn't be like the Wake game where we got to throw the ball half-court unguarded and then dribble to the 3-point line ungaurded)
That's assuming we have 6 seconds once we grab the rebound. But we actually had about four seconds and got off a 30-footer from one of our big men. That was really AWESOME.
Instead we could have fouled them with 40 seconds left on the clock and hope they missed one or two foul shots...and even if they make both of them...we still have 35 seconds to get of a good three point shot instead of a contested HEAVE. When you are down a point or two and don't have enough time...YOU EXTEND THE GAME BY FOULING. Coaching 101. Anyone who disagrees is basically retarded when it comes to basketball. - then probably get off a contested three point shot

Quote : | "YOU DO NOT FOUL BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT OVERTIME TO HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN OR EXTEND THE GAME." |
Seriously...we didn't have five seconds to get up the court and get a shot. We had four, maybe three and a half seconds. When the shot went up there was six seconds left. It took us over a second to rebound and come down with the ball.

carry on.
my request: no more johnson PLEASE. we saw tonight that fergie can take the ball up the court just fine (against duke's scrappy D, no less). let him do it for a few minutes while javi rests from now on.

It sucked that for 3 days I'd been looking for tickets with no luck whatsoever that I have to go out to the RBC center and flag people down to get into a game I just about see more Duke fans Cameron REJECTS sitting comfortably on the lower level (and you guessed it, in the fucking student section) than I do state fans.
Seriously, it's disappointing. I bet tailsock was at this game and paid less for tickets than I did.

Quote : | " RALEIGH, N.C. - Duke faced another deep deficit and was staring at yet another road loss, but these Blue Devils had an even bigger problem: They weren't following the instructions of their Hall of Fame coach. ADVERTISEMENT
So during some late breaks, Mike Krzyzewski turned control of the huddle over to the players, and that strategy led to his latest milestone victory.
DeMarcus Nelson capped a remarkable late rally by making two free throws with 1:01 remaining to lift No. 7 Duke past North Carolina State 87-86 on Saturday and give Coach K his 800th career win.
"He kind of let us decide what we were going to do with the game," guard Jon Scheyer said, "because for a lot of it, we weren't doing the things that (the coaches) told us to do."
Nelson and Scheyer both scored 19 points for the Blue Devils (25-3, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who used a game-closing 14-5 run to take their only lead of the half, win their third straight and snap a two-game losing streak away from Cameron Indoor Stadium.
"For a couple of late timeouts, I let anyone who would actually want to talk — and say something that somebody would listen to — run the huddle," Krzyzewski said. "Teams become really good when they talk to each other. What happens is, they take ownership. We never took ownership of this game until late in the second half."
Ben McCauley scored 19 points for N.C. State (15-14, 4-11), and he made one of two free throws with 1:11 remaining to put the Wolfpack up 86-85. He fouled Nelson 10 seconds later, and the Duke captain — a 45 percent free throw shooter in his previous six games — knocked down both.
"If I would have made that, we're in overtime right now," McCauley said.
Instead, he turned it over on N.C. State's next possession with 40 seconds remaining, and Duke ran down the clock, with Scheyer missing a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left. Courtney Fells got the rebound and pushed the ball to McCauley, whose 3 from about 30 feet bounced off the glass as time expired.
"I tried getting as close as I could, and it really wasn't even a shot — I just threw it up and hoped and prayed that it went in. Unfortunately, it didn't," said McCauley, who as the buzzer sounded collapsed to the court with his jersey pulled over his head.
Greg Paulus scored 15 points and hit two 3s during Duke's frenetic comeback, sparking the burst by connecting from the top of the key with 3:52 remaining to make it 81-76. The Blue Devils hit five 3-pointers in the final 7 1/2 minutes.
"N.C. State really outplayed us the whole game except for the last 8 minutes," Nelson said. "Everything was going for them, but the thing about it is, we pulled together as a team. ... It just clicked for us — in the last 8 minutes, we started making the plays that we needed to win."
Kyle Singler and Gerald Henderson had 12 points apiece for the Blue Devils, who made Krzyzewski the sixth Division I men's coach to reach the milestone. Coach K did it in his 1,064th game — only Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith did it in fewer games — and is 800-264 in his 33rd season.
"It is hard to put it in perspective because ... you're coaching this team, and it's more important what this team is doing than what you've done with other teams," Krzyzewski said.
This one might have been one of his most improbable victories, if only because N.C. State — with coach Sidney Lowe sporting the same candy-apple red blazer that was the rage of last year's run to the ACC championship game — put forth its most inspired effort of an otherwise disappointing season.
Still, it wasn't enough to prevent its seventh straight loss and avoid becoming the first team this season with 11 conference losses.
"We've been saying this all year — if we come out and play like that, we can play with anyone," Lowe said. "We need more guys to be ready to play. We need guys to be unselfish. We did all of that today, and it was great to see that if we can do that against the top teams in the country, we should be able to do it against anyone. ... We have to judge ourselves and play a certain way ourselves, and not up to the opponent."
Freshman Javier Gonzalez added a season-high 18 points and fellow rookie Tracy Smith had a season-high 14 in his first start for the Wolfpack, who led most of the game. They took a 70-57 lead on McCauley's jumper with 12:41 remaining and for a time maintained it by making 22 of their first 23 foul shots.
But down the stretch, they went 3-of-6 over the final 2 1/2 minutes, with Gonzalez going 2-of-4." |

Quote : | "Coach K Gets 800th Win in Comeback Against NC State While Wife Yells at Officials
Duke will probably be playing the first weekend on the NCAA tournament in Raleigh's RBC Center. Good thing that the NC State Wolfpack won't be there. Duke needed a wild comeback to beat the lowly Pack, 87-86, and keep pace for with North Carolina atop the ACC standings.
The win gave Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski his 800th career victory. 727 of those wins have come at Duke, where he has won three national championships, 11 ACC regular season titles and been to ten Final Fours.
In this game, Duke did what they always do to pull this one out: get after it on defense, gun threes (they shot 28 of them and 29 from inside the arc) and got to the foul line (37 times). They also got an assist from Coach K's wife who yelled at the officials that they sent the wrong NC State player to the free throw line (the officials met and changed the call). Ah, the couple who berates officials together, stays together.
NC State had a 70-57 lead seven minutes into the second half but lost focus defensively. Jon Scheyer hit a three to start the comeback. Greg Paulus hit one. Then DeMarcus Nelson. Then Paulus hit another one. Then Nelson. Then Paulus. In all, Duke hit 13-of-28 from deep.
For the Wolfpack, this loss has to hurt. State had lost six games in a row and been accused of mailing it in of late. They had led for most of this game and seemed to have control late. Give credit to them for bringing it this afternoon as their coach, Sidney Lowe, has been dealing with his mother being in the hospital after suffering a heart attack.
It was also senior day in Raleigh, where Gavin Grant was honored in what was probably his final game at home.
Still, State is now 4-11 (two more losses than anyone else in the conference) and has a week off the stew about this before a showdown at Wake Forest." |

reasons we lost:
1.refs 2.letting duke shoot too many 3s 3.duke shooting the 3pt and ft game of their lives 4.johnson played 7 minutes 5.fells foul trouble 6.grant and costner not showing up at all really
reasons we were in it:
1.javi playing like an all american (where has this been?) 2.furgie playing some point guard and bringing the ball up vs dukes press with ease(backup pg anyone?) 3.tracy and ben being absolute beasts (expected vs duke but where was hickson?) 3/1/2008 8:46:15 PM |
