I've been re-evaluating my beliefs and moral positions and I'm finding it harder and harder to justify eating meat and using animal by-products. I'm torn between just living with being an morally inconsistent agent or transitioning to vegetarianism/veganism.
Anyone have tips/resources that were helpful for them transitioning from avid meat eating to vegetarianism? I'm not interested in converting my family or making a big deal out of it to anyone else, so I'd probably be cooking for myself a lot, meaning the easier the better. 4/30/2014 12:37:47 AM |

^^ My main tip is to not try to replace the meat with "imitation" meats. You eat a veggie-patty burger expecting a hamburger and it's the worst damn thing in the world. You eat a veggie-patty burger a veggie-patty and it's really quite fine. Good "replacement" meat products are few and far between. The faux-sausages I've had have generally just been absolutely terrible.
For the most part, I've found it best to just stop thinking about meat, stop trying to replace meat, and just eat a lot of good veggies. Most restaurants have a couple of really good vegetarian meals (not too many, but hey, it makes your choice easier). Vegetarian burritos, hibachi, pizza, etc, are all damn good. Get enough veggies on there and you won't even notice there's no meat. (Well, maybe not really, but close enough.)
My cooking at home is pretty close to 100% vegan and I really don't go out of my way to do it. Chop up some bell peppers, onions, zucchini, carrots, whatever else I have in the fridge, sauté it for a few minutes, and slap some tomato sauce on it for pasta sauce, or mix in some salsa and make burritos, or throw in some teriyaki and call it stir fry. Quick and easy. 5/1/2014 8:45:07 PM |

^ yep. I think the best way (and healthiest way since a lot of those substitutes aren't very healthy) to enjoy eating as a vegetarian is stop thinking about "replacements" and just make good vegetarian meals.
