I've witnessed that before, but not on Glenwood. One of them is still on the team.

"The Buffalo Sabres have announced that the team’s 39th season of operation will begin on Friday, October 10 when the Montreal Canadiens visit HSBC Arena.

This will be the seventh time the Sabres have faced the Canadiens in their home opener in franchise history. The team is 4-1-1 all-time in those contests, with the only loss coming in the first ever regular season game in franchise history on October 15, 1970 (3-0 loss).

This season, the NHL has revised its scheduling format. Each team will continue to play an 82-game schedule, but the breakdown of opponents has changed. Each team will play their divisional opponents six times (24 games in total), four games against each non-divisional conference opponent (40 games in total), one game against each of the 15 non-conference opponents and three “at large” games.

Two of the Sabres home “at large” games will be against the past two Stanley Cup Champions. The Sabres will battle the defending champion Detroit Red Wings on Monday, April 6. The 2006-07 champion Anaheim Ducks will head into HSBC Arena on Tuesday, February 24. The remaining “at large” game will see the return of Head Coach Wayne Gretzky and the Phoenix Coyotes in Buffalo on Friday March 6.

The National Hockey League will announce the 2008-2009 regular season schedule at noon on Thursday, July 17."

RALEIGH, NC—The National Hockey League today announced that the Carolina Hurricanes will open their 2008-09 season at the RBC Center on Friday, Oct. 10, against the Southeast Division rival Florida Panthers. The league announced the home openers for each of its 30 member clubs, and is slated to announce each team’s complete 2008-09 schedule on Thursday, July 17.

Along with announcing each team’s opener, the NHL also announced each clubs’s “wildcard” opponents. The Hurricanes will face its divisional opponents – Atlanta, Florida, Tampa Bay and Washington – six times during the season, and its non-divisional conference opponents four times. Carolina will also play every Western Conference team at least once, and will play home-and-home sets with three “wildcard” Western Conference teams – the Anaheim Ducks, Phoenix Coyotes and St. Louis Blues.

For a second there I had forgotten about how we always get screwed over with wildcard opponents. Good to see nothing has changed in 5 years.

i sort of wanted a second shot at detroit if we were going to get tough opponents anyway, (how are these 3 teams going to be?) but we should be playing them at home so i guess it doesn't really matter

on the brightside, we get Gretz in the house. I doubt he will get the ovation he got at the draft a few years ago but having him in the building is special

Not a fan. No back to back games in Canada for a roadtrip. Was hoping for a TOR/OTT/MON swing like early last year, but no dice.

Distinctly different setup at the end of the season than last year. Last year the last 6 or 8 games were all divisional. This year the last 7 games are all out of division, and only 3 of the last 15 are divisional.

5 straight Sunday afternoon home games in November/December? Brilliant fucking idea if the objective is to avoid having any NFL fans come to those games.

to me, i don't really care all that much about the NFL so I love the schedule, more weekend games ftw, especially sunday games.

but it looks like they sort of tried to schedule around at least the panthers playing since they usually play at 1, with most of the games starting at either 3 or 5.

and it looks like we could get a state/canes doubleheader on my birthday on 1/31

"Given that Wallin has two years left on his contract at a relatively affordable $1.875 $1.725 million, and under NHL rules the Canes would have to buy out that contract to give him his release, Lulea would either have to pay $2.4 million to cover the buyout or arrange some sort of loan deal. In short, this all seems pretty unlikely."

Wallin sent an email denying it anyway, so it doesn't matter, but Luke's point there about it seeming unlikely is off base. If it happened, it would be with the approval of both sides. The Canes don't have to buy out anything and there are not any disputes if it's a mutual parting. It wouldn't be a Radulov kind of situation where he gets stolen away.

I think probably JMatt, Roger or Dan will probably be buying those games from me (what with higher ticket prices that I need to recoup). But feel free to wrestle them for it.

"I have obtained photos [front and rear] of most NHL third jerseys for the up-coming season. Here are some other highlights from around the league.

CAROLINA: The Hurricanes will introduce a black third jersey, with red and white trim – different than their customary red home uniform with the black and white trim. Each arm will sport red and white angular stripes. The bottom of the jersey will feature a narrow white stripe and a thicker red one. In between, will be 10 white stars. The club’s red logo on the uniform front is placed within a white triangle, presumably to honor the famed Research Triangle that dominates the Raleigh-Durham area."

Weird. Might be good, might be bad. Better than the flag idea. I guess it'll be one of those "wait until you see it" type deals.

i said it else where, I'll repeat it here:

Quote :
"I've reached the conclusion that the Triangle represents Research Triangle Park, the stars represent the local military presence with fort bragg and camp lejeune. The black color is a throwback to Greensboro Coliseum's black curtains, the insane price tag will be an homage to why we lost hockey for a season, and the downward angled red stripes represent the team's profitability."
