Glad the nation was able to see us choke away a lead to Florida while leading for most of the game and just how bad we are when we don't have Russell Wilson in a football game. Plus our women's basketball coach is out due to a reoccurance of breast cancer. Great week for NC State athletics

You guys need to chill out. Ok, so we lost to a ranked Davidson, they have arguably the best player in the NCAA on their team. Marquette, also ranked, lost with a prayer shot with .4 seconds on the clock. This game, a little more disappointing, but think about the attitude that everyone has this year.

A lot of people thought the Davidson game was an upset, I wouldn't think so personally, but a lot did. And at the end of this game the Florida atmosphere was one of an upset. Last year everyone expected to beat the shit out of us, this year people respect us, now all we have to do now is learn to close, which is proving tough without an experienced back court.

The only thing Im worried about now is how Marquette exposed our weaknesses, and now everyone knows the formula to beating NC State is press after a made basket and a high 2-1-2 zone. Im predicting 16 win season.

I actually liked seeing a more agressive Degand because he is so fast, and I hope that he can further develop this season. I thought that the biggest flop was having Calathes matched up with McCauley when state has the lead with less than 10 seconds in the game. Fells should have been on him hard. He had already blocked two of his shots.

There is no way anyone on our team can get through that pick and stay with him. Given that knowledge:

- We switch McCauley AND a third guy has to step into the paint on the weak side to either help McCauley if Calathes goes by him or stop the screener if Calathes passes him the ball (with Fells coming from behind to also make a play).
- Same as above except McCauley blitzes the screen hard. McCauley and Fells get their hands up to stop the pass to the screener.
- We trap Calathes outright.

At the end of the game, it was Fells and McCauley involved in that last two plays. Before that, it was McCauley and Mays/Degand. Mays and Degand were getting abused, so he put Fells on Calathes. The FIRST time fells was on him, they switched, but Fells was able to come in from the help side and block the shot.

Donovan called a TO, and the very next play Calathes ran a backdoor cut to get an easy shot against fells (good coaching).

The second time fells was in the pick and roll, he was not able to recover and help. No third man stepped up to stop Calathes' floater.


In conclusion, we need to change the way we play on-the-ball screens. Blitzing the screen and recover is a good default option if our guys can work as a team to stop the pass to the screener.

I am starting to notice a pattern. All three times we have played a quality opponent we have the lead and get it up to double digits. Then with about 8 minutes to play we lose the lead and it is back in forth until the last minute when we find a way to choke it away.
