If they pull off a win next week, I'll donate my balls to science and eat a shoe.

Well I thought NCSU had the dumbest fanbase on the planet, but TENN raised the bet. When you're down 6 and you have your opponent pinned deep with less than 2 to play, let them punt inside their 5 rather than let them have a free kick from the 20. You need a TD either way, and you're only going to have one possession, might as well let them punt deep in their end zone rather than let them have a FREE KICK FROM THE 20. Fans cheering at the safety, brilliant. I always thought Bellichick was going through the motions a couple years ago when he intentionally took that safety, but conquering grammar school math is quite the accomplishment apparently. No worries TENN, Florida won't cover the inevitable 25 point spread.

Probably not, but I never cheer when my team's chances of winning a game are diminished, do you? I have a firm grasp of second grade arithmetic, and clearly the TENN fans do not. Now, I wouldn't put them on our level just yet, not until their fans start the wave/creating noise when we're on offense, but nonetheless, common sense was miles away from Neyland Stadium. If I need a touchdown and I've got one possession with under two to play, and my opponent can either kick the ball off freely from the 20, or punt from the back of their own endzone with under 2 to play, which would I prefer being the trailing team?????? Please tell me people understand being down 4 and 6 is essentially identical in that situation.

Yep, and if they'd let Prince gain another 18 inches, UCLA would have been punting from the back of their end zone with a punt block on instead of a FREE kick from the 20, which would you prefer if you trailed by 6???? The UCLA coaching staff should have taken a safety on that play anyway, no reason to throw a pass (risk an INT) or even punt inside the five, but they were bailed out by an even more inept TENN defense/coaching staff that didn't pass basic arithmetic. Bellichick really must be a genius since he passed grammar school math. But, as I mentioned earlier, TENN's fans are dumb, but not nearly as dumb as NCSU's fans being loud on offense, but tonight they inched closer.

Sure, I just don't cheer when my team's chances of winning decrease, it's lonely a the top (i.e. mastering basic arithmetic). I guess it's on the TENN coaching staff more than anything. And yes, when Bellichick took that safety several years ago, he was certainly a "dumbass." That's sort of the reputation he's built up, you know, being inept and everything with his 3 rings.

lol

the jokes on you dumbass. its pretty obvious that UCLA would take the safety on 4th down, the crowd was cheering that they saved 40 seconds by doing it on 3rd

shit man, UCLA even challenged if it was a safety so that they could run off more time before having to take the safety.

Excessive retardation, NCSUMEB, 15 yard penalty, poster has been ejected from this thread...

There is no fucking way they would have punted on fourth down, it'd be snapped into the 43rd row.

And wtf was up with the Reviews at the end of the game? 10 minutes to review the fumble by UCLA, 8 seconds to review the safety? That phantom offsides call was some bullshit, would have been Moore's 6th pick in two games, haha.

Well, I sure wouldn't want my QB running the ball taking hits in the endzone up by less than 7, Qb's do tend to fumble moreso than a running back. Why didn't UCLA just run the ball up the middle on that last offensive play, instead of having your QB run for his life risking a fumble? I'm not exactly sold UCLA's coaching staff made all the right decisions, but the name calling in this thread is going to make me cry for sure but if one of you could answer without hurting my feelings, that would be great.

i like the 3rd and ten play call. roll the qb out to the wide side, gives him plenty of room to run the ball out of the end zone if the pass isn't there. obviously didn't work out as expected, but the Tenn defense played it pretty well too.

Yea, I knew eventually someone would take my argument and translate it into me undermining Chow and his career. If I were a UCLA fan, and my Qb is in the end zone and we're up 6 late in the 4th running around and getting drilled to the point where he comes up spitting blood, I'd question the play call, no I'm not questioning Norm Chow's entire body of work over 3 decades, but nice leap there, I knew it was coming. I'd just rather my RB carry the ball than my QB from a fumble standpoint.

Well shit, at least something good came out of this fucking weekend:

Quote :
"Tennessee picked up two huge commitments on Sunday when defensive ends Corey Miller and Brandon Willis from Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., pledged to play for the Vols.

Miller, a 6-foot-4, 227-pounder, was committed to Florida State but decided against that commitment and said he’d play for UT. Miller is ranked No. 3 at defensive end, 28th overall by Rivals.com. The 6-4, 250-pound Willis was considering several schools. He is ranked No. 6 as a defensive end, 38th overall."

god damn, the #3 and #6 DE in the country were both on the same HS squad?

Quote :
"We take this break from your local Big Orange production of agony to bring you this news — today was perhaps the biggest recruiting day in the history of Tennessee football. This is not hyperbole.

I know. I can’t believe it, either.

But after the Vols fell 1 yard shy of the UCLA Bruins in a 19-15 shocking heartbreaker, Scout.com broke the news that top defensive end prospects Brandon Willis and Corey Miller of powerhouse Byrnes (S.C.) High School and big, physical wide receiver Demarco Cobbs all committed to Tennessee this weekend.

That’s three of the nation’s top 120 players according to both services.

“They are just a quarterback away,” Willis told Rivals.com. Truer words have never been spoken.

While there is a lot of work to be done on the current Vols roster, this is huge news. That means recruits are still buying in to what Lane Kiffin and the new coaching staff is trying to build in Knoxville. It’s going to take time — and we all need to remember that sometimes — but days like this go a long, long way in building a program. Essentially, this is what Nick Saban did at Alabama (and before you Crimson guys start your crowing, I’m not comparing Kiffin and Saban): Despite the struggles of his first season, Saban got plenty of great players to take leaps of faith, and that’s one of the main reasons why the Tide are where they are right now. Well, that, and Saban is a great coach.

We’re not sure about that yet with Kiffin, but we know that he’s a terrific recruiter. And today is a clear indication of that. Willis, Miller and Cobbs make it 21 commits for UT in this year’s class, and this trio assures the Vols that they’ll jump into the Rivals.com top five.

Here is a breakdown of the haul…

* Miller seems the jewel of the bunch. He’s a freakish talent at 6-foot-4, 227-pound defensive end is the No. 28-ranked player in the country per Rivals.com and the No. 3 weakside defensive end in the country. He has offers from Georgia, Florida State, Cal, Miami, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas A&M, among others. He’d committed to Florida State, but while visiting Knoxville with Byrnes teammate Willis, they knew while sitting in Neyland Stadium that Knoxville was the place for them.

According to the Rivals.com evaluation:

On the Hoof: Has a tall, lean frame with the ability to gain another 25 pounds. Has the appearance of a huge outside linebacker or an averaged-sized weakside defensive end.
Needs Improvement: Size and strength are the key for his future development as a defensive end. The offensive tackles at the next level are much bigger and stronger than what he faces in high school.
Most Impressive: This pure defensive end is very explosive of the ball and possesses above-average athleticism. He may be athletic enough to play linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
Conclusion: Is athletic enough to play coverage teams early at the next level, and physically ready to perhaps get reps on passing situations as a freshman. Miller should develop into an all-league performer before his college career is over.

* Willis is a potential star as well. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound four-star strongside defensive end and Miller’s teammate was the MVP of the Tennessee lineman camp back in the summer and got a good vibe from Coach Ed Orgeron and the coaches and campus then. This weekend’s atmosphere just clarified that. Willis is the No. 38-ranked player overall in this year’s class by Rivals.com, and he is the No. 6-ranked DE in the rankings. He had offers from Alabama, Clemson, South Carolina, Cal, UCLA, Florida State, North Carolina and Texas A&M, among others.

According to the Rivals.com evaluation:

On the Hoof: Willis has a very thick and developed lower body with an undersized upper body that can hold another 20 pounds.
Needs Improvement: Along with much-needed upper body muscle mass, he needs to work on getting off the snap of the ball quicker.
Most Impressive: He is an extremely hard worker that plays every snap at 110 percent and he is very coachable. Willis also does not lack confidence and is self motivated to be great.
Conclusion: May see some early playing time as a strongside defensive end until he physically matures. Once he fills out, he will definitely play defensive tackle and prove to be a run-stopping machine.

* Finally, there’s Cobbs, who unless Kenny Stills — who loved his trip to Knoxville, too — decides to come to Knoxville, may prove to be the final cog of a UT receivers recruiting class that includes Markeith Ambles, Matt Milton, Ted Meline (who may play DB) and Delvin Jones (who could play TE). Cobbs is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound receiving stud who continues the tradition of UT plucking prime talent out of the Sooner State — joining Robert Meachem, Chase Nelson, Gerald Jones and David Oku, among others. Cobbs had offers from Alabama, Oklahoma, Arizona, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Texas, USC and Texas A&M. The four-star player is the No. 120-ranked player overall by Rivals.com and he’s the No. 1 player in Oklahoma and No. 8 overall receiver.Though there isn’t a Rivals evaluation I’ll tell you that he is a big, physical receiver with 40 times in the the 4.6 range. Everybody in the country wanted him, so that should tell you something, though he simply isn’t a burner. Whether he’ll grow into a beast linebacker or become one of those physical receivers that Kiffin and crew love, he is a stud talent for the Vols, who all of a sudden are the hottest recruiting team in the country.

This is where it starts. Nothing can make me feel good after yesterday’s performance, but Kiffin and Orgeron and the boys can recruit, and the talent is absolutely going to be there in Knoxville for the years to come. This tells me that the staff is getting the recruits to look beyond this season and into the future. It tells me that they can see that all this team needs right now is a quarterback to be successful, and now that Tyler Bray is onboard, he may be that guy. Another question that begs asking is does this make the Vols a player again with the No. 6 overall player and second-ranked running back in the country, Marcus Lattimore? He has offers from everybody including Alabama, Auburn, North Carolina, South Carolina, Penn State, Florida State, Oregon, and others.

Regardless, what a day for the blue-chippers. What a day. Nice way to get a dreadful weekend closed out and a nice way to give us some positivity heading into a week where there probably won’t be much."

Byrnes is absolutely loaded. They also have Marcus Lattimore, the #1 RB.

I'm curious if Willis and Miller still plan on taking more OVs. If so, this isn't over til Signing Day. Miller has already shown his mind can be changed. So many kids are just making reservations rather than commitments these days.

"10. What's the connection between Crompton and UCLA? Gangster rap.

Last week UT asked a site selling Crompton t-shirts,www. cityofcrompton.com in the style of the Compton logo, to stop selling the shirts to protect Crompton's eligibily.

Now I'm wondering if Vol fans are going to demand the site go back up in an effort to end Crompton's eligibility.

11. Every time Crompton entered the field in the second half, UCLA's fans cheered loudly.

I've never seen this before.

Ever.

A road crowd cheering the reinsertion of a quarterback because they realize he's their secret weapon.

After the game I talked to several of Crompton's teammates, past and present. I asked them how this could keep happening. All of them were floored, all of them said he's a stud in practice. Then I asked if they could name another player at any position who played that well in practice and that poorly in games.

They couldn't think of a single one. "

man this is going to be UGLY

Quote :
"

Tennessee sent out a center who couldn't snap in practice.

On his left was a guard who spent time on the sideline in a walking boot and on the right was another who injured his ankle in the first half against UCLA.

The injuries were lined up in the heart of the UT offensive line in front of a surefire pro on the other side of the ball, and the Vols were nearly helpless to slow him down - and that was just one star.

UT really isn't much healthier up front now, but it could use some rapid healing with about 10 more NFL prospects looming Saturday at No. 1 Florida (TV: WVLT, 3:30 p.m.).

"It's a big concern," Vols coach Lane Kiffin said. "We're going to push our guys through practice and find out who can make it and not wait until Saturday to find out, but we're pretty banged up there.

"As you guys have known, we're not very deep up there and there are not a lot of answers to go to. We've got to get better with what we have."

At the moment, the Vols can't be entirely sure what exactly they do have heading to The Swamp.

Center Cody Sullins was limited last week in practice, then took a pregame shot and played through the pain of a hand injury. Left guard Vladimir Richard was held out of nearly every drill to protect his aching Achilles' tendon, though he also tried to play before giving way to Cory Sullins.

Throw in Jacques McClendon's early ankle sprain and all the defenders packed at the line of scrimmage to stop the run and it wasn't much of a surprise the Vols couldn't get the critical yards it needed or protect the quarterback. UT obviously needs its starters at full speed against a far more talented Florida defense, but it might have to use them even if they aren't.

"There's not a lot of options," Kiffin said. "The other Sullins (Cory) is there and he played late in the game for us after Vlad just couldn't go anymore. Cody Pope is in there as well, but there aren't a lot of answers to go to. We've just got to continue to work with what he have.

"We were tired up front (late in the game), and a championship team understands drives like that are going to happen and you have to win them."

The Vols were at least able to sustain their second-half drives, even if they didn't finish them the way they wanted.

On consecutive possessions UT ran 30 plays, controlled the ball for more than 14 minutes and gained 122 yards despite its well-documented struggles in the passing game - a product of the gritty performance by the offensive line. But the first drive only yielded a field goal, and the second ended near the goal line after the Vols couldn't get 3 yards with two chances on the ground.

"You do take it personal," Cody Sullins said. "It's a pride thing, and we're disappointed. We should have put the ball in the end zone right there, and it's a tough one to swallow.

"I think we all communicated well out there, we all played well and I don't think there was any confusion for us. It was just one of those things when you're battling injuries you have to work your butt off in the training room to get back, and I think everything was calm out there on the field and there wasn't any confusion on our part. We did our job and I think executed pretty well."

Their job is only going to get more difficult, and the Vols will have to execute even better against the Gators.

It would clearly help if they could get everybody between the tackles healthy.

"All three guys were banged up inside and that showed during the game," Kiffin said. " . . . The offensive line played fabulous in the first game - second game, we did not play very well up front.

"I said the best position group the first week was the offensive line. (Last) week it was the worst position group."

Now UT just has to figure out who exactly will be in that group this week.
