Perhaps I shall show up. It is fun to watch with other people, and a noon kickoff for a game like this is rare.

I was in NYC last weekend and watched the Arsenal Portsmouth game at Nevada Smith's and it was a fucking blast. There were around 50 or so Arsenal fans in there all singing and chanting.

nice. i doubt it will get that rowdy...it would be cool/scary if it ever did get crazy in ruckus for a soccer match.

I might after the spurs game finishes up. I don't usually watch with people who "like" soccer.

That Burnley fan they just mentioned (Dave Burnley, changed his last name) is INSANE.

He has been to every Burnley match since April 10, 1974. And I mean EVERY. Home and away, including friendlies. For example, he came to Cary when Burnley came over to play the Railhawks last summer.

Here is the last match he missed, 35 years ago:

Quote :
"Burnley was originally scheduled to play at Newcastle on Dec. 1, 1973. But it was postponed because there was a miner’s strike, which meant no night games because there wasn’t coal to supply electricity. There was also a train strike, which hampered travel. And it was the worst winter England had seen in more than a decade, so matches were postponed throughout the season.

The match was rescheduled to April 10, 1974, though few knew about it. Dave worked the phones in earnest, but no one could tell him when the match would be played. The afternoon of April 10, he finally found out it was on when he called Newcastle.

“In a panic — I hadn’t missed a game for five years then, since Jan. 16, 1969 when we played [Queens Park Rangers] at home — so me only other route was to try to scramble a helicopter,” Dave said.

He got on the phone and was told that it would take 30 minutes to get clearance for takeoff. He was then told that the soonest the chopper could touch down in Newcastle would by at 9:15 p.m. The match would end shortly after 9.

“I didn’t even inquire about the price,” he said, the dejection still evident in the retelling of this tale 34 years later. “That was the end of it. I went upstairs, and as a grown man, I cried me eyes out. And we won that game 2-1 on a Wednesday night, and my mother said, ‘Burnley have won! Burnley have won!’ And we saw it come up on the news. I shouldn’t do it, but I threw my slipper at it. I pledged from that day, April 10, 1974, to make sure I go to every game no matter what it takes.” "

the ESPN halftime shows have been ridiculously awkward and shitty

it's like they threw some of their employees on there that have English accents and thought that was enough

^ damn, that is awesome, here's the bio on his website - http://www.daveburnley.co.uk/aboutdave.html

thats cool and all to have that much support for your team, but I figured he was some sort of multi-millionaire executive who could afford to travel that much, this is downright depressing

Quote :
"But Dave’s working career has, by necessity, been shaped by his need to attend Burnley matches, and as the club always came first, he has been forced to change his job and indeed his whole line of work to enable him to continue his attendance record, to such an extent that he has now had more than 100 full time jobs and more than 70 different occupations.
Personal relationships too have suffered for the cause. Many girlfriends have come and gone, each having to accept that his love for Burnley FC surpasses all else. One such relationship resulted in the birth of Dave’s only child, a daughter who was named Clarette in honour of his team. She is now grown up and studying at university.
The financial burden of following the Clarets has also proved great over the years, to the extent that the cost of travel and match attendance has meant Dave still lives at home with his elderly mother."

Any position that would allow him to travel with the team would be a dream job, but he might not like it if he had to "work" during the game.

For all you guys who love soccer (and want all CFB and CBB games but don't want to pay for the packages on TV) but don't have access to ESPN360.

http://extranet.espn.com/espnsynd/private/hub/

Enter ESPN360 through this site. Make sure you sign in with your free myESPN username in the top right when you open the ESPN360 website. Then click remote access and sync it. Works like a charm.

Bundesliga, La Liga, Portuguese league, Serie A and Championship League in England among others...
