Not sure what thread fit this best, but I respect Ron Paul for speaking his mind

Quote :
"(CNN) – Dick Cheney is taking criticism from at least one member of his own party over the former vice president's recent and persistent criticisms of the Obama administration's handling of national security issues.

Ron Paul, the Texas congressman and upstart 2008 presidential candidate, told CNN's Larry King Monday night Cheney is in no place to criticize Obama's handling of the war on terrorism.

"I think he had his eight years, and he's caused a lot of trouble for our country and perpetuated a war in Iraq unnecessary and wrong-headed," said Paul. "I would say it would be best he not be so critical right now."

Paul was a constant critic of the Iraq war during his unsuccessful presidential run. While he is currently not seeking a higher office, his son, Rand, is seeking the Republican nomination for Senate in Kentucky.

Paul's comments come several days after Cheney released a tough-worded statement criticizing the president's response to the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day.

"He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won't be at war," Cheney said in the statement. "He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of 9/11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won't be at war. He seems to think if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core al Qaeda trained terrorists still there, we won't be at war."'"

GOP poised for comeback in midterm elections
January 1, 2010

Quote :
"Reporting from Roswell, N.M. - After losing the White House and nearly 70 congressional seats in the last two elections, Republicans are poised for a strong comeback in 2010, with significant gains likely in the House and a good chance of boosting their numbers in the Senate and statehouses across the country.

The results could hamper President Obama's legislative efforts as he prepares to seek reelection and reshape the political landscape for a decade beyond, as lawmakers redraw congressional and state political boundaries to reflect the next census."

Remember when the OP was crowing about "GOP losses" or some such? I mean, wow, in less than five months the Democrats probably have blown it. New record?

Quote :
"GOP House Candidate: Fight Against Democrats Bigger Than Fight Against Terrorism
Eric Kleefeld | January 4, 2010, 1:10PM

Allen Quist, a Republican candidate seeking the nomination to go up against Rep. Tim Walz (D-MN), has made a serious pronouncement: That the political battle against the Democrats is the defining fight of this generation, even greater than the fight against terrorism.

"Now why am I doing this? I don't need to be in lights, I don't need to speak, I don't need to be before a TV camera, I don't need to be in the paper. I have been there, I have done all that. I don't need to be there," said Quist, a former state Representative who ran for governor twice in the 1990's, and even won the state party convention's endorsement in the 1994 primary against the incumbent moderate GOP governor.

"It's because I, like you, have seen that our country is being destroyed. I mean, this is -- every generation has had to fight the fight for freedom. This is our fight. And this is our time. This is it. Terrorism, yes -- but that's not the big battle. The big battle is in D.C., with the radicals. They aren't liberals, they're radicals. Obama, Pelosi, Walz -- they're not liberals, they're radicals. They are destroying our country. And people all over are figuring that out."

Quist does not have a clear road to the nomination, as he faces a convention/primary battle with state Rep. Randy Demmer. It will be interesting to see whether this stark Tea Party-style rhetoric will be an aid or hindrance to Quist's chances."

Nice to know that the GOP has their priorities in order. It is rather inflammatory language when you consider what they would want to do to terrorists, then consider that they think of President Obama as a radical & a bigger threat than terrorism.

"RNC tries to calm fundraising fears

Following a disclosure report showing the Republican National Committee burning through cash, the RNC is trying to reassure committee members and donors that the RNC is in a “great position” heading into 2010.

RNC Chairman Michael Steele assumed leadership of the committee with $22.8 million in cash on hand and no debt. At the end of 2009, a nonelection year, the committee had $8.7 million in the bank.

The total is the lowest the committee has had coming into an election year this decade, but RNC chief of staff Ken McKay sought to temper concern late Thursday in a memo to committee members."

Just because you keep repeating it doesn't make it true.

I saw a report on TV yesterday where they interviewed democrats voting for Brown, and THOSE people were claiming their reason was that Obama wasn't bringing the change he promised.

So is Obama TOO radical or is Obama not radical enough?

I know nothing is going to stop the right from trying to spin this as a national rebuke of Obama, because that's probably the best thing for them to do. BUt the reality is that local issues drove this election, massachusans (?) still support Obama at 60% rate, and Coakley was a terrible candidate who ran a terrible campaign.

That's the real problem Obama is having. He promised to rule as a moderate, with a wink to the far-left. But he has let both groups down. The Left sees that Gitmo is still going, The Patriot Act still exists, more war troops are heading for Afghanistan.
And Moderates see the ballooning deficits, gov't take-overs of private industries, and secret non-transparent meetings that leave out the GOP.

November approaches.. Like Clinton did after the GOP take-over in 1994, can Obama bring himself to declare that the era of Humongus Government is over?

Because they're all smart, obviously.

Most people seem pretty ignorant on the subject of history and government. We're taught about it in school, but when you're a kid you can't see the importance of those subjects so you don't really learn anything. Education in those areas is crutial, because without a solid background in history, you can't possibly understand the consequences of the policies that you vote for. What we have now is an short-sighted population that will buy whatever ridiculous legislation their party leaders cook up while blindly opposing any legislation that that the other party introduces.

Oh, indeed. But whose history are we talking about? You can't say a singular "history" any more than you can speak of a singular "literature".

As for that poll, I read something elsewhere about it (538? not sure) that said that some of the groupings for that poll were ridiculously small. I think the 18-29 grouping had about 150 people in it. Also, it's self-IDed Republicans, and this is at a time when most conservatives identify as independent.

Upon assuming office, Johnson "will become the first permanent Administrator of the General Services Administration in nearly two years."

Earlier in 2009, Johnson was unanimously approved by members of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. But a single senator, Republican Kit Bond from Missouri, has used his symbolic 'privilege' to hold up consideration of Johnson's nomination since last summer. The delay was meant to pressure GSA administrators to approve a $175 million federal building project in Kansas City."

"Report: Shelby Blocks All Obama Nominations In The Senate Over AL Earmarks

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) has put an extraordinary "blanket hold" on at least 70 nominations President Obama has sent to the Senate, CongressDaily (sub. req.) reports. The hold means no nominations can move forward unless Senate Democrats can secure a 60-member cloture vote to break it, or until Shelby lifts the hold.

"While holds are frequent," CongressDaily's Dan Friedman and Megan Scully report, "Senate aides said a blanket hold represents a far more aggressive use of the power than is normal."

Shelby has been tight-lipped about the holds, offering only an unnamed spokesperson to reporters today to explain them. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid broke the news of the blanket hold this afternoon after Shelby announced it to him in a letter sent today. Reid aides told CongressDaily the hold extends to "all executive nominations on the Senate calendar."

According to the report, Shelby is holding Obama's nominees hostage until a pair of lucrative programs that would send billions in taxpayer dollars to his home state get back on track. CongressDaily laid out the programs Shelby wants to move forward or else:

- A $40 billion contract to build air-to-air refueling tankers. From the report: "Northrop/EADS team would build the planes in Mobile, Ala., but has threatened to pull out of the competition unless the Air Force makes changes to a draft request for proposals."

- An improvised explosive device testing lab for the FBI. From CongressDaily: "[Shelby] is frustrated that the Obama administration won't build" the center, which Shelby earmarked $45 million for in 2008. The center is due to be based "at the Army's Redstone Arsenal."

Though a Shelby spokesperson would not confirm that these programs were behind the blanket hold, the Senator expressed his frustration about the progress on both through a spokesperson earlier in the day, the magazine reports.

Back in Alabama, the Mobile Press-Register picked up the story early this afternoon. The paper confirmed Reid's claim of a blanket hold, and reported that a Shelby spokesperson "did not immediately respond to phone and e-mail messages seeking confirmation of the senator's action or his reason for doing so."

A San Diego State University professor and "Congressional expert" told the paper "he knew of no previous use of a blanket hold" in recent history."

Tim Pawlenty offers a stinging critique of GOP
Quote :
"In the upcoming issue of Esquire magazine, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) offers a harsh rebuke of his own party's actions in recent years, arguing that the GOP "blew it" when they had the chance to govern the country.

"The marketplace measurement in politics is something called an election," said Pawlenty in a lengthy interview appearing in the magazine's March issue. "And in 2006 and 2008, the marketplace was telling the Republicans 'We prefer the products and services of your competitors.'"

Pawlenty, who is retiring this fall after his second term as governor of Minnesota to explore a run for president, ascribed the electoral defeats of Republicans in recent elections to "a whole bunch of corruption and personal scandals that weren't compatible with the principles it claimed to stand for."

"We got fired for a reason," he added. (You can read the full transcript of Tpaw's interview with Esquire here.)

Pawlenty's critique of his own party is one of the first attempts by a likely 2012 Republican presidential candidate to gain distance from the personalities and policies of the Bush Administration. "
