^Yeah, I missed the Stars' first goal.
Here's a hit to the head by Matt Cooke on Marc Savard from this afternoon's game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z1vJrIAg-0&feature=player_embedded
That seems pretty much identical to the hit Mike Richards put on David Booth that he didn't get suspended for. For reference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSILVbnofZM
Cooke should and will get suspended for that, especially since he has already been suspended 2 games for doing the same thing to Artem Anisimov earlier this season.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXixraReToU
If the NHL really wants to get rid of these hits, they would have a set policy for when this happens, and not make it a subjective process. In international hockey, there would have been a misconduct penalty called on the ice, and a suspension would be automatic.

In international hockey, hits to the head are illegal.
This is shoulder-first, and totally clean by NHL rules. 3/7/2010 8:00:50 PM |
zsl All American 979 Posts user info edit post |
I'm aware of that, which is why I used it as an example. It SHOULD be illegal in the NHL. It might not prevent people from doing it, but it would make the punishments fair. I'm tired of this prior history bullshit being a part of Campbell's decision making process. Have a set punishment for when this happens, and if a player is a repeat offender, then have a tiered suspension process for each time it happens. That way it's the same for all players.

Quote : | "For days now, Marc Savard has stayed inside his Boston condo, unable to do much beyond eat and sleep. His friends and Bruins' teammates say he exists in a vacuum of silence – no TV, no music – with curtains drawn even in daylight.
They know this from his text messages and brief telephone calls since he was carried off the ice at Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena, his game and life interrupted by a head shot from the Penguins' Matt Cooke.
What the Bruins also suspect is that Mr. Savard, at 32 in the prime of a rebuilt career – from “me” player to team player – is done for the season, the playoffs too. They spoke of that yesterday after practising in Montreal, where Boston head coach Claude Julien registered blunt disappointment. “He's not well. Not well at all.”
That Mr. Savard's career has been jeopardized has sickened many in the NHL, including Mr. Cooke's Pittsburgh teammate Bill Guerin, who said the league should punish headhunters. Mr. Cooke got off scot-free, although the NHL is vowing to draft new legislation to ban blind-side headshots next season. Boston forward and former Penguin Mark Recchi was certain of one thing: “Once again it's a black eye for the NHL.” " |

It was a dirty play... but it was a push to the side where Campbell lost his balance. It probably should have been a minor or double minor penalty, not a major. There definitely shouldn't have been a game misconduct though. Those refs were way overreacting. 3/14/2010 1:27:08 PM |

It was a bullshit game misconduct. The only reason some of you people say otherwise is because it was ovie and you know it.

zsl All American 979 Posts user info edit post |
Bullshit. I don't know if it is worth a suspension or not, but that is the kind of reckless play that pisses me off about Ovechkin. After watching it several times, there's no way you can say it was a push from the side. He was completely behind Campbell and shoved him into the boards FROM THE GOAL LINE. That is one of the most dangerous plays you can make in hockey. When you add Campbell being injured, then this was called perfectly by the referees. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial, especially that fatass Bordreau.
Also, you can't issue a double minor for boarding. It's either a minor or a major, depending on severity. And as far as the game misconduct is concerned:
Quote : | "42.5 Game Misconduct Penalty - When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed." |
So basically, after calling the major, they HAD to call the misconduct because Campbell was injured.

And he'll definitely be suspended, as this is his third game misconduct and that carries an automatic one game ban.
