^The worst part is that Mexico has to play South Africa to open the World Cup. It's bad enough when one of those teams is playing alone.

word. i have a feeling there are gonna be a lot of ties at the end of this...usually 1 and 2 arent as tough to pick in soccer. then you dont have too many rounds to guide 16 teams from there. and the odds of picking the total number of goals varies on what team you have but i would say people would range their tiebreaker goals between 10-20...

As cool as it would be to have the World Cup local...I hope to God they don't chose the USA...that has FAIL written all over it.

not to mention the host cities are so scattered across a massive country. The host cities need to be centralized to one area like Mid-atlantic, West, north east....not all.

You do realize we hosted the highest-attended-to-date and what's regarded as one of the most successful world cups of all time 16 years ago, right?

What exactly would have FAIL written over one in 8 or 12 more years? The bigger and better stadiums? The impressive infrastructure? Low cost/ease of travel for visiting fans? Greater possibility for more sponsorship revenue than other host countries? Moderate weather in the summer?

So again, I ask, was that a serious post?

I want what you're smoking and I"m sure many others will as well.

Please explain to me how this is true. Nothing says "ease of travel" like going from New York to Los Angeles, or being a car centric nation with some of the worst urban sprawl and poorest public transportation among industrialized nations.

Having the World Cup spread across the entire United States is like having Europe as the host. I am also not a fan of countries that do not give a shit about the sport hosting, even though selfishly I will obviously enjoy it because I will have a chance to attend some matches.

they play in NFL stadiums jackass

^ just because Americans don't give a shit doesn't mean the millions of immigrants already in the US don't give a shit too

and I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's a hell of alot cheaper/easier to find flights into the US than into somewhere like South Africa

this...and so many more reasons.

Lets not forget the giant target painted on the USA. Security is already air tight for the World Cup...just imagine what hell it would be when DHS throws its 2 cents in

Also, there were lots of games where you could literally go to the stadium the day of and buy tickets at the window in 94. Not to mention what little television coverage it gets already.

From South America, perhaps. From Europe and Asia, not really.

I personally still kind of hope the USA wins the bid, but it's for purely selfish reasons like I mentioned above. Taking away my personal bias as an American, I would be more prone to support England, Portugal and Spain, or Belgium and the Netherlands. When the World Cup is in the US, it's just another event going on and will have little or no effect on the daily lives of most people. When it is in many other countries, the entire world seems to stop in that country for 4 weeks, and there is pretty much nothing else on the brain but the World Cup.

I think you underestimate how big the World Cup would be domestically in 8-12 years. There are a lot more people who appreciate soccer but don't follow it at all than ever before. If we could get those people into the stadiums to experience an actual World Cup game that passing interest could easily develop into something more.

that's nice and all, but it has nothing to do with hosting a successful World Cup. The only thing that matters is money and FIFA knows we can give them more than any other bid could

Why are both of you ignoring the fact we've already hosted a World Cup successfully and set attendance records that still stand and will probably only be beaten by us in the future? It was before we had soccer-only programming on television, before every single game of the tournament was shown live on television, before we even had our own domestic league, and before we had accomplished anything at all as a country internationally.

We've already proven we can host one and for the next bid, we'll have bigger and better stadiums than we did before - find me a country that has 10-12 quality stadiums with capacity like we have. Your little list of stadia means jack shit because we're not talking about a World vs. US bid - who gives a fuck about a stadium in North Korea or India because they have no chance at hosting?

I'm not trying to tell you that if you support another bid you're dead wrong (I actually would like to see England get 2018 as well). I'm arguing that saying a US bid has "FAIL written all over it" is just ridiculous

Germany 2006 has been the most successful world cup to date...fyi.

Just admit like the rest of us that having the world cup in the USA is a good idea purely for selfish reasons.

I didn't say the US WOULDN'T win the bid. I don't really give a shit how much money FIFA can put in their coffers; as a fan that means nothing to me.
