Thanks for the input. I've taken some of those ideas and some measurements to update my designs.

I've done preliminary designs for all 4 bedroom closets (master large WIC, master small WIC, bedroom #2 RIC, and bedroom #3 RIC).

Overall, I like my two RIC designs. I don't care much for my large master WIC design, but I'm not sure what do do. I also like my small master WIC design, but I don't know if that's what I should going for or not. I'll be using mostly adjustable shelving with basic shelf standards.

I'd appreciate any input on these. I looked at ikea's website and didn't see much that I cared for, and I'm looking forward to actually building these anyways. Also, instead of bombing this thread with tons of pictures, I'll just show 1-3 and post a link to my gallery for the rest.

true, didn't think about that. It should be easy enough to provide full height space in one half of each of the other 2 closets (just remove the lower shelving).

I've estimated the closet dimensions at:

Large Master: 8'x4.5'
Small Master: 5'x3'
Bed #2: 7'x2'
Bed #3: 5'x2'

Well, this wasn't totally DIY. My mom's [longtime, like 10-years] boyfriend helped me with it. Well, more correctly, I helped him. I dug a lot of it out, mixed mortar, did some of the stone grouting, and cut a lot of the stones. He laid all the bricks and placed the stones.

yeah, i cut it to look like NC. It was already in the right general shape, so I cut it to finish it out. It's centered in the patio, in front of the fire pit. I doubt many people would notice it unless I pointed it out (even though it's probably >3' across).

wdprice3, in the small master, i would shorten the unit on the back wall and put in another high bar along the left wall to use up the empty space in the corner (L-shaped unit).

I would also stay away from drawers because they are expensive to build and they are less efficient storage (unless you are looking to get away from a dresser/chest-of-drawers in your bedroom).

FYI, I use about 10' of closet rod and my wife uses about 19'. Only 3' of our closet is full length hanging items (but when you need it, you need it).

Another idea is to build 12"x12" cubes instead of long shelves. That way you can buy bins that fit in the cubes and give you drawers for less $.

^thanks. I'll see how a high rod on the left looks. I'll also change the 2 other bedroom closets to have a high rod on one side of each closet. The builder is providing those wire shelves, which give you lots of rod space; however, my configuration has only about 3' less rod length (all combined) than what the wire shelves are providing.

I was hoping to use drawers/shelves in the closets to take the place of a dresser in the bedroom. However, I didn't know that they were expensive to build. I'll look into decreasing the number of drawers and just doing shelves. Also, most of the higher shelves will be adjustable.

I want to keep some drawers in the large master for clothes and the installation of a small safe (so it's not visible).

What's the best way to handle non-square fence corners?

I was planning 4x4 posts @ 8"OC buried 2' for normal runs. For corners and gate posts I was going to bury 4' (no concrete footers, may over-excavate and add 6" of gravel).

Should I double up corner posts so a post is aligned in each direction, or just miter the rails?

house of lights on yonkers has a ton of lights to choose from but many are way expensive (2800$ for a light?!). I bought these because they were discontinued and vinyl to match my trim. They're designed for the beach and never show signs of age

It is in much better condition than it looks, but it is still shitty. The fence around the property is even worse. Fence is my next project, then the carport. The fence won't be a cheap project though, considering it surrounds about 5 acres.

I spent some time tinkering around in my new garage this past Sunday. We just moved a couple weeks ago, so excuse the mess and general chaos. I built a few little projects to help me get organized and more functional in my new found space. Nothing very impressive, but I was productive and thought I'd share.

With some scrap laying around, I built a little mobile workbench/compound miter saw stand...



Work was throwing away some 18" x 24" heavy duty plastic bins, so I turned them into drawers:



We're doing lots of painting and my wife is pretty crafty, so we have lots of painting supplies. I built this 4' x 4' cabinet to hang in the shed and we'll have 3 shelves for gallon cans and two for quarts and samples. Instead of making the doors panels, I framed them and now the door on the right can store a ton of spray paint cans and the door on the left will eventually be for rollers, trays, brushes, etc. I still have to install some dowels in the spray paint door so that they don't fall out if you open the door quickly.

rewiring and networking the whole house. done a few runs and test them. will need to go ahead cut my power and swap my panel to do much work on the power. plan to have a dedicated breaker for my computer/network closet and another for my home theater. the rest will just be adding outlets and replacing ancient ones with aluminum wiring and no ground

I'm just curious as to why you're choosing aluminum wiring. Is it simply cost or another factor? I'm also confused as to what you mean by "no ground." This is residential, using NM cable (Romex) and plastic boxes, right?

well, I discovered a trick when trying to figure out how to do interior walls

cut a hole for your box (not too high up on the wall)
take a 4 foot bit and stick it in the hole in the box until you hit the floor board
drill down to your basement/crawl space
go under house and find the hole
push bit out and widen hole to the appropriate size (with an auger bit in my case)
push the bit back into the hole
tape your wire to the bit
go back upstairs and pull the bit back with the wire taped to it

I finally got around to hanging my homemade paint cabinet. It turned out really nicely, I think. I still have to run some dowels in the spraypaint doors and do the brush/roller/tool organizers on the left door, but you get the idea...

Now I present to you: my $30, 3-hour workbench. Well, the $30 doesn't include the cost of the kreg pocket hole screws. It's 6' x 2' and solid as hell. I designed it to use only 1 sheet of plywood and (5) 8' 2x4's.

I climbed up and stood on it after I was done and it didn't so much as creak. I used pocket holes for everything b/c I got a Kreg jig with all my birthday Lowe's gift certs. The way I built this, the top is replaceable very easily (as is the shelf) and you can't see a single fastener.

I finished my entire upstairs, about 1100 sq. feet. I promised I would post before and after pics like 2 years ago. Finally went through and took the pics. Started Jan 09, finished November 2010 (For the most part). These after pics were taken a couple of weeks ago though.

There is room behind almost all of the walls that are accessed using those short doors you see in the pics. I also need to state that I had a lot of help with this from family and friends so it was more of a do it with family and friends project. Gotta work on that name, doesn't sound right.
