Harrow's 3PT% is going to shoot up. Not saying he'll be a threat to consistently hit 3s this season, but he'll make them when he's open now. He's getting more comfortable out there, and isn't rushing as much. 1/19/2011 9:56:59 PM |

Harrow played very, very well. Lorenzo Brown really disappointed me though. He's been a no show for a long while. I feel like Tyler Harris coming in next year is gonna pay big dividends though. No one outside of Wood can really knock down the 3 well. Hopefully when we hire a great mid-major coach or assistant off of a team like Duke in the offseason we'll pick up the defense. I know the game could've been pretty close if we'd shot better, but our defense left a lot to be desired. 1/19/2011 10:11:39 PM |

So you thought our defensive effort was acceptable tonight?
It wasn't a pace issue, it's that we can't stop dribble penetration to save our lives. Our transition defense is terrible. We drift away from 3 point shooters leaving wide open 3's. We can't figure out how to fight through screens. Our team is completely lost on the defensive end of the floor. It picked up in the 2nd half and we looked decent, but the first half was pitiful.
Duke shot 51% for the game.1/19/2011 10:22:26 PM |

thought State played pretty well but they had a ton of defensive lapses that led to easy buckets. also Nolan Smith is really impressive to watch in person, super quick and great ball control. Harrow looked great in the second half. he's gonna be a good one.

We were trying to force tempo. Someone was going to have to miss an open shot for that to happen. That is Dukes end game strategy spread the floor and milk the clock it works like a charm if they can hit the open shots that are available when a team tries to double.1/19/2011 10:43:52 PM |

Considering that we let FSU shot 80% or whatever in the 2nd half of the game on Sat, I fully expect Duke to shoot 50%+ from the field and drop 90+ pts on our shitty defense.
Duke = 92 State = 76
State will keep it close for the first 8-10 minutes, Duke will get a run going, go into the half with a 9-10 point lead. Coming out of the half, K's coaching dominance will take hold, Duke will build the lead to 20+ and then cruise to a victory. Harrow will make a bunch of garbage baskets at the end to make the score less embarrassing. " |
My post from page 1. I need to start putting money on these games. Our biggest problem remains the defense. We suck at some many things on defense, it is mind boggling. At least we aren't WF.
I was pretty happy that we came back in the 2nd half, but we absolutely cannot get a defensive stop when we need one.

We do this every year against Duke, except we usually pull out a W.
We show that we do in fact have talent and can do well when we give effort.

Points allowed is pretty important when it comes to D. And over 90 is a lot of points. Also there were a lot of wide open duke shooters tonight. And they managed to run there O and get very easy shots. Compared to our players working very hard to end up taking a not so easy shot.
State needs to figure how to produce plays that provide high probability shots. I saw a lot of 1 state player going up against 2 to 3 duke players in the post. Not a very easy shot. 1/19/2011 10:59:01 PM |

Not really. Especially when it's just a number out of context.
Duke hit their season averages for offensive efficiency and possessions right on the nose tonight. The former is the important stat when talking about our defense, the latter is what creates a high scoring game -- Duke is one of the fastest teams in the country, they're going to play a lot of high-scoring games.]1/19/2011 11:17:18 PM |

^^ I guess Duke sucked on defense too then, since only one other team has put up more points on them than us this year.

I'll man up and say no, I actually didn't know that, and it does put things more in perspective.
Watching this game (first half, in particular), it just appeared that we are always a step slower and basically have problems moving our feet. I don't know how many times I watched Nolan drive around the defender and right down the lane. He's a good player and does that to many people, but to me, it seems like he was able to do with more ease against us. Granted, a lot of that is due to our youth. Javi is the only upperclassman that noticeably is terrible on D....
I thought our defense in the 2nd half was much better. I just remember seeing a ton of WTF defensive plays in the first half...and not all of them were from our young guys.

On my phone since my computer shut the bed, so I gotta be brief.
1) I had awesome seats 2) Sitting so close to the Duke bench nearly made me cry when I realized what it's like in game when you have not just a good coach, but good coaches. 3) I know there wasn't a ton to be excited about or whatever, but our fans give in way too easily. 4) Harrow is straight up beastin'.

Its obvious we are really undersized at the center and forward positions...Leslie is a beast but he cant do it all on his own. We really need a legit 7 footer to play on a competitive level.
You can tell Harrow and Leslie have extreme talents...Zo went missing this game and I think since he injured his ankle he hasnt been the same. He lets ppl go on defense and just pulls a Cortney Fells at times on offense.
Really impressed with Wood, Leslie, Harrow and Smith but we need a TALL big man.
Coach K did an amazing job and Smith gets better every year.
thank GOD Javi didnt come in the 2nd half for anything. I hope Leslie sticks around and we can develop downlow. Smith is good but he is way too small to be an ACC center. 1/20/2011 1:17:00 AM |

Finally watched it.
I think we played pretty well. The lineups in the first half killed us (as did foul trouble). We found the right lineup in the second half --
Harrow Wood Leslie Howell Tracy
Their bench players destroyed ours. Lo Brown was terrible again. I wonder how he keeps getting the start. Severe game time performance anxiety. Leslie at the 3 gives him a smaller guy to defend, and Wood is a decent defender at the 2. They couldn't stop Harrow. Once he gets stronger, Harrow will be as good or better than Nolan Smith.
Duke beat us in the details, which is what you expect to happen. They finished their point blank shots, made their FTs, played a few more screens correctly, caught us napping in transition. It just takes 4 or 5 plays to account for the difference in the final score.
Duke values every possession and is very efficient. We aren't there yet.
I really like Leslie. He plays hard all the time. He is really raw, but at least he is trying. Javi, Painter, Brown, and Williams didn't help us at all. It's really hard to win a game when the other team can rely on 9 players and we can only rely on 5, 2 of whom are true freshmen.
I don't know what it is about Duke that draws out our best play.
^ Taller big men would be nice, but we need more shooters, first. Duke took a risk by sticking so many guys in the paint because we didn't have any shooters. The plumlees could just go up for blocks and could count on someone rotating down. The correct play for us against that would be to kick it out, but we only have wood as an option. Shooters create spacing that creates dunks for our bigs, regardless of the bigs' heights.
