I've just heard the one song that Pitchfork has up for DIIV, and I had no interest in listening any further but if I can find a stream I'll check it out some more.

That Ty Segall Slaughterhouse album is pretty terrible. Jesus, where do I begin:

I listened to this thing about 5-6 times all the way through to see if it would grow on me. Hell no; it's just bad. Though I'm not really familiar with his stuff as much as people really into that genre, the songs from the White Fence collab he did earlier this year seemed appealing. I had to check this out because of the Pitchfork hype if nothing else.

The album is really less than 30 minutes long if you consider the last "song" should be on Metal Machine Music or something. It's hard to not fathom 'who in the hell would waste a stylus on playing this shit out for the 12 minutes it goes on for'? Overall, the album is thrown together, boring, none of the songs go anywhere (no hooks, no display of creativity) and most importantly it just sounds highly contrived and stressed. It seems like this album was put together and recorded by that one kid who could never fit into a certain scene (in this case, the garage rock scene) so he just tries too damned hard by screaming and getting drunk. The "cover" of Diddy Wah Diddy is just terrible and Segall does exactly that; gets drunk, screams and curses for a while, and that's it.

If I had to say anything positive about the album, it's the cover. Don't waste your near-$20 for this piece of crap, even if the cover is interesting. There's (to me) so many other great garage rock records out there right now. Hell, I would recommend Gross Ghost's recent album over this one, if based solely on the fact they're local and you should be supporting local music...

I bought Slaughterhouse, but haven't listened to it yet. That particular incarnation of his band is super fucking heavy, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Even if you hated this one, you should check out Melted and Goodbye Bread. The latter is especially hooky.

FYI: Amazon with a gold box deal of 1.99 MP3 album downloads. Of Monsters and Men, Beach House, the Black Keys to name a few.

Figure I couldn't go wrong with a few new tunes on the iPod for the long runs.

^^ It's got a huge Peter Gabriel vibe. Pretty cool.

Also, Slaughterhouse is great. Yeah, "Fuzz War" is dumb, but this guy makes three or more LPs a year, so not ever idea is a winner. If you don't live heavy garage, I can see not being into this record, but it's highly enjoyable.

New Beachwood Sparks is thoroughly enjoyable. Still not quite as good as Once We Were Trees (which is massively, massively underrated), but excellent in its own right. They're so much better at the Gram Parsons west coast country-rock thing than 99% of the bands that try that.

super late to the conversation on this, but despite not caring for their first record and having no real interest in their new one, I decided to listen to the new best coast last night for the hell of it, and I think I made it through 3 songs before turning it off. definitely some of the most lazy and dull shit i've heard in a while. is the LA music scene really that barren that this is (as far as I can think of) the biggest act to come out of there at the moment? Other than maybe dawes and beachwood sparks I can't really come up with any worthwhile groups off the top pf my head to come out of LA (and california by extension) in a while. I realize that might be kind of a silly thing to say, but when someone makes a shitty album wondering why anyone would want to live anywhere other than california when I could explain why for a myriad of reasons, coupled with the fact that the music scene is perceivably shitty from my point of view,it kinda rubs me the wrong way

edit: guess I forgot about girls (though they're done now) and maybe ty segall and novelty acts like eagles of death metal and i am probably unaware of some bands being from california so this post probably makes me look like a big angry baby

^^ Did you listen to the entire album or stop after track 2? The second track definitely sounds like the Dead. The rest of it sounds like Gram Parsons-era Byrds/ Flying Burrito Brothers. Listen to the track "Tarnished Gold" before writing it off.

KAlso no amount of negative pitchfork reviews or hating on best coast is going to change her manager-move good financial decisions.

If anybody has seen this album being purchased, there's more of that type of purchaser than there are us music nerds. Given the choice between staying broke and recording in a garage and only appealing to some writer named cohen, currin, or berman versus cleaning your sound up with Capitol records or whoever else and having every alt baguette in the country buy your album and making tons of dough I think would make anybody question their motives with six strings.

Don't be surprised if that show Friday sells out.

Ps I'm pretty damned sure kicking Ali Koehler out had to do with weight and image of the band with everything I'm talking about. The urban outfitters thing needs to be mentioned again, too...

i'm not saying it wasn't a smart move financially. can't blame her for that. i just think bethany cosentino is a twat with that bullshit "california is better than everywhere else" attitude that people on the west coast seem to have. i wish i could go to their show in DC this week and throw eggs at her, but alas, i am in san diego (on the best coast) for 3 more months.

Because she says "Why would you live anywhere else? . . . This is the only place for me," in a lighthearted pop song?

I'm not a big Best Coast fan but I've heard that complaint a good amount and I find it pretty silly.

Anyway, I thought Those Darlins were much better than Best Coast tonight in Miami. The alt-baguette crowd wasn't very into them at first but Funstix Party had the place pretty raging.

Best Coast was OK I guess. Lots of slow stuff and new stuff that I didn't know, and stuff that sounded the same. I was not very into them.

Although that may be due in part to me having gone through a recent breakup and seeing the couples sing stupid saccharine Best Coast words to each other's faces was pretty and vomit-inducing. Closed with When I'm With You and Boyfriend, those was cool. Bobb was cool. Bethany was super cute a few times, with some banter that I couldn't help but smile at.

That is my stupid review.
