Hopefully it will be a late third. Then early 4th vs late third is a wash. I really like the picks. We needed end help and haven't had a solid return man in years.

n00b question... why do the panthers drafting 8th in some rounds and 9th in others? 4/28/2012 2:47:08 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148441 Posts user info edit post |
Panthers and Dolphins finished with the exact same record, there was a coinflip between the two teams, which the Dolphins won
so Dolphins got 8th pick in rounds 1,3,5 and 7, Panthers got 8th pick in rounds 2,4,6
same reason why the Colts and Rams are alternating the 1st and 2nd picks
edit:
actually the Bills also had a 6-10 record, so i guess we all kind of swap between 8,9,10 each round

trading a 3 for 4 isn't sound decision making. ever. just like trading a 1 for a 2 isn't.
it's completely different when you are trading for a player who has actually played in the NFL.

There's always a one round penalty for acquiring future picks; this is common knowledge among people who follow the draft. The key variant here, as someone stated, is the relative positioning of the picks. When we traded for Armani, we got the 89th pick in that draft of what turned out to be the 33rd pick the next year. Dogshit move, and even though you couldn't know we would have that high a pick the next season, it was a very late 3 for a player with a lot of risk.
Here, we're getting a top 10 pick in round 4. The drop in talent from 4 to 3 in general is less than the drop from 3 to 2 (and even less still than 2 to 1), so even if the 3 next year is in the same relative position, its a fair deal given the precedent. However, if we improve next year and say our 3rd next years falls in the 80s, then getting the 103rd pick this year will look like a wise move. A 15-20 position drop for a guy we clearly wanted and a guy who will already have a year head start on whoever we'd take next season. Can't really blame Hurndog for this one; I think its more the stigma of giving up a day 2 pick for a day 3 pick, even if the actual picks are relatively close. The 6th round pick is really just a throw in, as they generally struggle to make a roster. 4/28/2012 3:22:16 PM |

My biggest issue with Hurney is using high picks on RBs and LBs, aruguably the easiest positions to fill in the game. He's hit on so many high picks because he's taking the safest players available. Most really good teams use more high picks in the trenches, on both sides of the ball. 4/28/2012 3:40:40 PM |

i just think some people will always think he does a horrible job if all 7 rounds dont produce superstars, which no draft ever will for any team
i mean people now want to act like Cam was a no-brainer, when you go back a year ago, it seems like 90% of people wanted Patrick Peterson or Dareus or Fairley
and at the time, who didnt think Jarrett was a good pick? how could you pass on Clausen at 48 when all you have is Delhomme and Moore?

1. i think he's awful because of retarded draft decisions along with the awful, awful contracts he has given players.
2. nobody with half a brain thought that.
3. clausen has been an overrated fuck since he was in high school. if you had watched any of his games at ND, you would know he wasn't worth any draft pick, much less a 2nd round pick.4/30/2012 1:01:09 AM |

We traded for the 8th pick in the 4th round. So if we win the SB next year, our pick will be 32nd in the 3rd round. So we really only potentially traded back 8 places, not a terrible deal, hahaha. 4/30/2012 7:44:56 AM |

^^Clausen was garbage, but without him sucking so tremendously, we would've never gotten Cam. So bravo Clausen
Also, Twista is right ... I'd say 75% of Panthers fans wanted nothing to do with Cam Newton before the draft. Peterson, Dareus, AJ Green were talked about ... shit, some even wanted Gabbert over Cam. But I think most just wanted to trade out of the #1 spot. 4/30/2012 9:53:18 AM |

I definitely didn't want Cam as our #1 pick, and I even go as far as saying I hated the pick at the time. I consumed my crow and hopped on the wagon after his week 1 performance was followed by another 400+ yard game in week 2. 4/30/2012 10:55:31 AM |

I didn't necessarily want Cam but I came around to the pick by the time we drafted him. I definitely wanted him over any other QB, especially that no-talent Gabbert who I saw as just a media hype construction.
I literally think Gabbert's agents were bribing ESPN analysts to make him relevant. 4/30/2012 11:25:38 AM |

I didnt think Cam would be that good either. Changed my mind after the first preseason game when he had that ridiculous scramble.
Quickly took our over 4.5 wins bet.
Then he promptly began to suck for the rest of the preseason.
Week 1 throws for 800 yards, the rest is history.
He hasn't become an elite QB yet or anything, but he might be one in a few months. 4/30/2012 11:31:56 AM |

I've been reading up on the draft recap and this guy, IMO, is a huge pickup.
Quote : | "Round 7 (No. 216 overall): S D.J. Campbell, California
Campbell views himself as a student of the game, but he's got some brawn to go with his brain power.
"I'm more an intellectual, cerebral type of player," the 6-foot, 205-pounder said. "I'm not the biggest, strongest guy, but I know the game of football. I know how to react in different situations and against different formations.
"I think about plays before they happen, which gives me an advantage."
http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Panthers-agree-to-terms-with-12-college-free-agents/4a2ca30b-1f21-4d0c-97be-59fe556cdb07
Maybe so, but Campbell had 22 bench-press reps of 225 pounds, ran a 4.51 in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 38-inch vertical jump at his pro day.
The bench press would have tied for tops at the combine among safeties, and the 40 time and vertical would have tied for second. Campbell, however, wasn't invited to the combine.
He only became a regular starter as a fifth-year senior last season after standing out for three seasons on special teams, an area that undoubtedly will be key to his hopes for pro success.
"Special teams are very important," Campbell said. "It really gets overlooked. People only want to see the guys who score touchdowns, but without field position, you can't be in position to score. If special teams can get you to the 50 as opposed to the 20, your offense can open up the playbook and have more opportunities to score."" |
on another note, we've signed 12 UFAs
