Michigan State has scored 1.2 points per possession the last 5 games against Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State, LIU, and St. Louis. Three of whom are top notch defenses.

Quote : | "DEFENSE TIGHTENS UP: Part of NC State’s resurgence at the end of the season has been its defense. Over the last six games, the Pack has held every opponent under 70 points and has given up just 62.7 points a game in winning six of them.
Over the last six games, the Pack has held opponents to 40.2 percent (135-336) from the floor, and just 28.5 percent (35-123) from three-point range. NC State has also forced 12.2 turnovers per game and 6.2 steals during that span.
On the season, NC State is 17-2 when holding its opponents under 70 points this season." |

When trying to pick a game that State is involved in I try to shy away form my personal evaluations. I would say we'd have a shot against the 1992 USA National Team (I know, eternal homer, with a dash of insanity). Because of my ludicrous fantasies I tend to go with computer simulations. This one is from ESPN insider.
Quote : | "No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks vs. No. 11 North Carolina State Wolfpack Edge: Kansas by 8 NC State wins a surprising 50 percent of simulations, a nod to its current form. But isn't there a sense that the Wolfpack are here partially because of what Georgetown didn't do? (OK, I'm projecting. Deal with it.) In reality, the Pack have the No. 142 defense in America, and that's a bad recipe against the most efficient offense they'll see. But give Mark Gottfried credit. The program is really, really close to being Sweet 16-worthy annually. Still, the pick here is Kansas in a close one." |
And just a little proof of the validation of their modeling system...
Quote : | "You want the short story? Fine. Working with the computer into the Sweet 16, our Final Four is still safely intact. But there were misses and cases where a little more faith could have been used. For instance, we rode Florida into the Sweet 16, but perhaps should have been swayed by the extremely high upset odds the Predictor offered on Lehigh (near 20 percent, which is wacky for a 15-2 matchup, when 15 seeds win at less than 3 percent historically). And we actually had South Florida (12), facing Ohio (13), but the Bulls let us down in that matchup." |
And here are the models they are using:
Quote : | "Decision Tree Model Leverages hundreds of team stats and contextual game information.
Power Ratings Model Analyzes each team's scoring margins and schedule strength.
Similar Games Model Based on results of past games between statistically similar teams.
Simulation Model Driven by advanced play-by-play computer simulation of game." |
I pretty impressed that they give us a 50/50 shot at this one even though the guys still picks Kansas.

We're really in the Elite 9 right now since there will only be 8 other teams left when our game is winding down. Just gotta outlast 8 teams rather than 15. 3/22/2012 6:13:29 PM |

I don't see how Kansas has an 8 point edge in a computer simulation that went 50/50. I guess the author threw the 8 points in there because he didn't like the computer. 3/22/2012 6:20:07 PM |
daddywill88 All American 710 Posts user info edit post |
I think the "Edge" that they refer to is actually the betting line. Earlier in the article they have the "Edge" to Marquette by 1.5, but in the write up they say it's 50/50 and they are going with Florida to win. 3/22/2012 6:23:13 PM |

it's pretty easy to put anyone making picks into one of two categories: people who buy that mark gottfried has gotten this team to improve a lot lately, and people who think we're the same team that got a favorable path.
i really don't know which is the case... but i think (hope?) it's the former. 3/22/2012 6:26:40 PM |

Well to be fair SDSU was a lucky draw they aren't very good. Georgetown was good this year but hadn't played their best basketball lately. Still a big win and they were a legit 3/4 seed.
Nothing like UNC who got paired up with the worst 4&5 seeds in the tournament. They each should have been a few spots lower. 3/22/2012 6:29:34 PM |

It is always weird to watch CJL and Zo together in a presser - I always anticipate Zo being more articulate but he just seems nervous and basically doesn't say anything except "I mean" and "I guess" and then CJL starts up with his deep ass voice and his newly matured personality 3/22/2012 6:41:07 PM |
