I wasn't watching. Weren't the bases load on that one call? So we would have gotten a run and still had two guys on base? Seems like that could have made a big difference. 5/20/2014 3:36:00 PM |
fenway All American 3135 Posts user info edit post |
Then you throw in the questionable strike 3 call in the 8th (I think) on a 3-2 pitch. That call goes the way of the batter - which based on the replay it should have - and State would've loaded the bases again with no outs. Instead the home plate ump rings him up on a very questionable call on a check swing, doesn't ask for help from the umpires with a better view and the guy 2 batters later flies out with 2 in scoring position. If the bases were loaded the guy who flew out would've been up with 1 out instead of 2.
State blew tons of opportunities, but the one time they came through (or at least when Turner came through) they got screwed by an umpire not even looking at the play happening at his feet. 5/20/2014 3:40:31 PM |
scotieb24 Commish 11088 Posts user info edit post |
^^Correct
plus in the 8th the same ump called strike 3 on a check swing instead of deferring to 1st base ump. Replay showed that he held up which would have been ball 4 to load the bases with no outs. So when Trea got up to bat it should have been bases load and 1 out and they would not have been able to put him on.

too many blown opportunities. Blown calls happen in lots of games. Too many times we had the bases loaded and either had infield popouts or swinging k's to put too much blame on the umps. Perfect way to end this shitty season. 5/20/2014 3:55:20 PM |

I love the wannabe objectivity. Especially when you are flat wrong.
UNC stranded plenty of RISP. That was just the way this game was being played with pitching changes every other inning. In games like that, yes, HUGE blown calls that directly negated runs can be the difference. 5/20/2014 4:04:46 PM |

so because UNC left runners on base that means its ok that we did it? Theres a reason these two teams were in the play in game. They're not good. At all. And we all saw that today. Blown calls or not. 5/20/2014 4:11:01 PM |

Regardless of whether we're not good, the blown calls potentially were the difference in the outcome of the game. 5/20/2014 4:11:59 PM |

^ I mean....do we? Swept by Maryland, FSU, Miami....lost 2/3 to Duke and Boston College. Took 2/3 in the last 3 series......against GT, Wake and VT who all finished in the bottom half of the league. This team has a few good/great players but they're not a good/great team and they don't belong in the NCAA Tournament. Even as a fan I can say that.

Yeah this team cost itself a shot at post-season play with games they gave away. They choked away games the last one against FSU, the last game against Duke, and also lost tons of close games in the Miami series, the BC series, Rodon's 15 K start against GT, final Wake game, etc. Just didn't have the offense this year and didn't have a good enough rotation and/or bullpen this season to make up for that lack of offense like they did in stretches last season. 5/21/2014 2:55:24 PM |

Draft is tonight
From an interview with Peter Gammons
Quote : | "7. What 2014 draft pick will reach the Majors first?
Gammons: Even if he’s not the first pick, I think it’ll be Rodon — a left-handed pitcher. Some people worry about him throwing strikes with his fastball; he throws a lot of sliders. But my guess is he’s a guy who’s going to get to the big leagues with that slider in a hurry. The question is, is his arm going to hold up? But he’s extremely strong, he’s got a great arm. And my guess is he’s likely to be the first." |

there's also Kannapolis (basically anywhere in the White Sox system other than Birmingham and the Rookie League teams)
apparently three of Carolina's commits got picked in the 30s. Gareth Morgan, our mostly highly rated commit (or at least the one expected to get drafted first), is still on the board.

Motiak All American 1498 Posts user info edit post |
Here's a quick explanation from another site on what happens if your pick doesn't sign:
Quote : | "Teams can also add picks by not signing their first-round selection from the prior draft. There is only one instance of this in the 2014 draft, as Toronto failed to sign Phil Bickford with the No. 10 overall selection and have since been awarded with the 11th pick in this year's draft. This rule actually applies to the first two rounds of the MLB draft, with a supplemental pick awarded between the third and fourth rounds for any team that does not sign their third round pick. These compensatory picks for unsigned players are not protected in the following season, so if Toronto fails to sign the 11th overall pick in the 2014 draft, they will not receive a pick in next year's draft." |
