Wars are complex. They come out of nowhere and all of a sudden, people you've never heard of are killing each other on the evening news. Here's what you need to know about the war in Syria — and it's not oil or religion. It's something that we're all creating together." |

The war's never really been about Assad. It's about the Saudis and their allies attempting to overthrow an Iranian proxy in retaliation to Iranian actions where that has occurred in Iraq, Yemen, and a failed attempt in Bahrain. (and some more militant-minded sheiks funding the Sunni-affiliated Islamic State that's looking to completely redraw borders in Iraq and Syria-two states currently more in the Iranian sphere of influence)
The notion that Assad could be gone and another Alawite would sprout up to replace him servant to Iran as Assad was and all the rebels would drop arms is pure lunacy. It completely ignores the geopolitical reality of the region and who are funding the rebels. The conflict is not over one guy. The pan-Arabian Peninsula conflict was between Saudi Arabia and Iran determining who controlled the Middle East, and now the Turks and Russians have boots on the ground to join them.

The phony solidarity from American conservatives is laughable. These are the same people that condemned France for opposing the Iraq invasion (Freedom Fries). The refugee threat is overblown to me. Yes, it has a small chance of making it easier for a terrorist to embed themselves in and get in the country but the reality is criminals are going to be criminals no matter what laws and regulations are in place so why try and stop them. Obama unloaded on Jeb:
"When I hear political leaders suggesting that there would be a religious test for which a person who is fleeing from a war-torn country is admitted, when some of those folks themselves come from families who benefited from protection when they were fleeing political persecution, that's shameful, that's not American," Obama said. I don't consider it overblown. Yes, it could be a fact of life if you're willing to accept refugees, but if you're an organization intent on doing actions like this as ISIS is, this mass widespread refugee movement into Western Europe provides a welcome cover to move your fighters into position. If I were an ISIS strategist, it's what I would do.
Hollande in his speech today called for greater control of the EU's external borders (the internal borders allow free movement of people via the Schengen Agreement and is considered one of the EU's foremost achievements for its citizens and businesses).
ISIS' latest promotional videos hailed the attacks of course while saying D.C. was next FWIW (per the BBC).

^^,^^^
The refugee situation doesn't change the equation in terms of ISIS moving people around. It's not clear yet if the Paris shooters even came as refugees, but we know at least 2 of them, possibly more were EU citizens. If you're going to be afraid of the refugees as a group because of a few people, you should also be afraid of your own citizens as a group because of the same few people shouldn't you? But this obviously doesn't make sense.
Secondly, for france, there's huge land area between France and Syria. ISIS could likely move people to France very easily, no matter what, refugees or not. I could even envision the refugees making it more difficult for ISIS since they are shunting all the refugees through a process and anyone deviating would be suspicious, and they can only travel with what they can carry with them.
For America, fear of refugees is plainly paranoid just by the numbers involved, but also because they would certainly also be put through a process (especially since they have to fly here). This isn't 100% guaranteed, but nothing is (ISIS can get here with or without refugees if they wanted through Canada or Mexico too), and the benefit of helping people would outweigh the costs of acting in an irrational reactionary way (which is what ISIS wants).
And that's the third element of this too, there's a famous story of Boris Yeltsin visiting an American grocery story and was amazed and the abundance which forced him to reflect on his own beliefs and policies. What better way to show the world and people who might be candidates for radicalization what western ideals are all about than welcoming fathers, mothers, and children to better lives? THere's not a fixed number of terrorists and good guys, and every terrorist we stop is one less terrorist, it's a dynamic system that is affected by our actions and the terrorists actions. Treating all the refugees based on the (theoretical) actions of .001% of them is not an input to this system that's likely to reduce the present or future terrorists.
None of this is to say that the refugees shouldn't be well vetted, as much as possible, to make sure they aren't on any known lists.

This is one hell of a stretch attempt by you.
Angela Merkel a few years ago said "assimilation has failed". She was not talking about Syrian refugees coming from religious fanaticism or war, she was talking about the secular Turkish community living in high numbers in Germany at the time and still do. It was more in the sense of "they live in Germany but had not become more German " over a long period of time in a sociocultural sense of learning to speak German and other ways to properly function in the majority of society. We in the U.S. thankfully do not have that issue to anywhere near the degree it exists in Europe. France in contrast is far worse on that than Germany when it comes to their Parisian suburbs, Marseille, and other places. The French taking in Syrian refugees, they're going to go make these Maghrebi semi-states in the Parisian suburbs even larger when quality of life is already pretty low in them from the standpoint of achieving a job or doing something in life, which drives desperate gullible young men in part to seek desperate alternatives.
What I've read from the news so far is a couple attackers were French citizens, a couple were refugees (one I think the BBC said his name was passed through Greece in August). Blaming the attacks entirely on the influx of refugees is incorrect, but if you were an ISIS strategist, and these guys are clearly pretty smart to successfully carry out multiple attacks killing 130 people, it's a good cover to put your fighters into position. You can completely disagree with my worldview, but you have to acknowledge that point if you take a neutral level-headed look at things.

^ assimilation has failed in france not because the people don't want to assimilate, but because they aren't allowed to assimilate-- this is what the riots a few years ago were about. If the reality of your country is that people can't get over their prejudices, then it's probably best not to force them until they're ready. In America, we've assimilated dozens of ethnic groups over the past 100+ years, no reason we can't continue to do so if we set our mind to it.
In the bigger picture of things, if a country or society enshrines in policy now that they will be prejudiced against group X for fear of a few individuals, that's not really a sustainable policy in the long run. It will almost always lead to more problems. If we can't face our problems head-on without compromising our principles or ideals, then we've already lost.
Quote : | "but if you were an ISIS strategist, and these guys are clearly pretty smart to successfully carry out multiple attacks killing 130 people, it's a good cover to put your fighters into position." |
This is true, but this is an effect, not a cause. If you cut off the refugee flow, ISIS would find another way, that might be more effective or harder to detect. It doesn't make sense to punish all the refugees to cause no dent in ISIS' ability to move people around.

You would think at some point we, as western civilization, would come to the conclusion that our response to terror and our policy in general only serves to fuel the ability of these heinous groups to recruit.
It's a very hard issue because every instinct is to meet with force and fear but that is exactly what the goal of groups like ISIS want and need.
