"unc sophomore star ryan switzer submitted a letter to inside carolina on thursday addressed to tar heel fans.

tar heel nation:
as we are getting ready for the upcoming 2014 season, i felt obligated to write you all a couple things that have been on some of our guys' minds. first and foremost, i speak on behalf of the entire team when i tell you how excited we are to begin preparation for august 30th to take on liberty. we have been at it since we got back to campus from the bowl game. lifting 5 days a week, running sprints, pushing sleds, dragging sleds, have all has been part of our daily lives for sometime now. as most of you know we went through a 2 week period of 6 a.m. conditioning, known as, “blue dawn.” but what most of you don’t know, was how hard and grueling that was. especially with class afterwards, and then another lifting session in the afternoon. then came along summer workouts, where running 300-yard perimeters and 26 100-yard sprints became the norm. a time for most college students to go back home with families and be lazy, we were here working our tails off to make sure that we were ready for this season; making sure that we were as prepared as possible to continue to change the culture around chapel hill.
here’s what i’m getting at. with all the work we have put in to get to this point, we need you to help complete the puzzle. guys on the team have put so much into themselves and this team to make sure we are the best we can possibly be. for some of the guys on this team, me being one of them, football is everything for us. we breathe it, we eat it, and we sleep football. everything we do in our lives revolves around the game of football. with that being said, you should know just how much we care and how much we have sacrificed to this team and community. but again, we need your help. i can understand your frustrations of past seasons, not being able to finish, not being able to “win the big one.” i understand your passion, because i too was once a little boy in the stands crying when my team could not get the job done. i understand your embarrassment when we got blown out at home to ecu last year. believe me guys, we understand. this year will be different.
but again, we need you. we need you there early. we need you there loud. we need you enthusiastic. we need you crazy. our stadium holds over 60,000 people, and we need it filled every single time we step onto that field. we feed off your energy so much more than you would think. stepping out on the field for warm-ups and seeing students already there, and fans filling the seats two hours early is one of the most exciting feelings for us players. it shows you care. it shows that you appreciate everything we have gone through just to get to that fall saturday. we are even trying to cut back on some of the noon games because even i know those can be a pain to travel to. liberty: 6 p.m. san diego st. 8 p.m. we are changing the way we do things, folks. we feel there is more excitement around our program now than there has been for a long time. we realize that we are truly blessed to be in the position we are. no more taking things for granted. no more lack of effort. no more slow starts. no more not being able to finish. If the season does not turn out how we all want it to, it will not be because we weren’t prepared or did not give it our all. Liberty, SDSU, VT, GT, PITT, and UNC-Raleigh need to leave Kenan this fall wondering what got into you guys. I believe you can do it. We love Carolina, and understand our responsibility to uphold the Carolina name. God Bless.
- Ryan Switzer #3"

so state beating unc means that David Glenn will spend at least 10 hours over the course of the next year talking about how...FACT...public schools with "The" in their name have better overall records and...FACT...unc has the better record vs. nc state over the course of the rivalry, right?

I thought the comedy gold was UNC's laughable attempt at retaliation later during a Bo Hines fair catch.

^^^I bet ole switzy won't run up into oncoming rushers without calling for a fair catch two years from now in West Virginia. Thats part of his MO is that he'll kind of dupe you into thinking hes gonna do one thing and then do another. Hell, just earlier in the game he let a ball bounce and acted like he wasnt gonna field it, and then ran up and took off with it.

i hate to say it but state fans boasting about this meaningless win is confirming uncs "their super bowl" attitude. I'm glad we got a win but the fact that it was over them by such a large margin doesn't really matter.

Conference standings for bowl selection isn't meaningless. Maybe the margin of victory doesn't have an impact beyond bragging rights, but the win meant a lot. Especially with Notre Dame getting a slot at random and a good chance the ACC doesn't get to send a team to the Citrus Bowl (meaning a bowl eligible team could get left out)

Sun Bowl has been around a long time. Plus we never play the PAC 12 and Utah would be an interesting challenge. Call me crazy but I'd rather see something unique over a game against some shirty AAC team. Recruits aren't gonna be like "woah back the fuck off they beat THE CINCY BEARCATS."

And if you care about recruiting we're just as likely to make inroads in Texas playing there as we are in FL playing there.

Charlotte is boring.

Haha, I don't care so much about the final score, all I care about is that we went to the their field after they were riding high after beating Duke and then we flat out embarrassed them. I mean completely wrecked shop, destroyed them.

It's going to be great for us in recruiting(already added a 2016 commit last night) and it helps carry momentum into our bowl game. UNC was an exclamation point to a solid season. Now the goal is to get the extra practices for our young guys and go out and win a bowl game to further help recruiting.

UNC wasn't our Superbowl, it was just a really fun win.

True, but it is the only game we won against a team that is even remotely decent. Win/Loss it was a much better year than last for sure but we still have a long ways to go before I would say we have had a solid season.

E Man's got a point. To show how little we care about UNC, the fans shouldn't have bought tickets to the game. The team shouldn't have tried to win. And we should look into possibly disbanding our athletic program just to prove that we don't care about beating UNC.

I think "solid season" is based on expectations. Obviously, we all hope State and Doeren can consistently be better than 7-5 (3-5). But it's fair to say we met (possibly exceeded) preseason expectations. And after last year, I'd say it's fair to call this a solid season.

Yeah I suppose. We ended up with the record I was expecting although I expected a W against BC and a loss to UNC. I just know how ridiculously soft our schedule was so 7-5 doesnt seem quite as great knowing we had basically 4 free wins and then syracuse and wake which were also basically free wins. Beating UNC certainly helps my feelings going into next year and a bowl win certainly would. Next year we have to get a win against a team like louisville or whatever middle tier coastal teams we play to show progress. I dont expect to beat Clemson or FSU but I think 4-4 or 5-3 next year in the ACC is what needs to happen and become the normal then we will be good.

Yeah, progress is definitely the goal. It's a long ways away, but if next year we go 3-5 again I think that'd be kinda disappointing. This year was certainly a step in the right direction for the team and for the staff. But it's also nothing more than that. Hopefully this year is just a step toward continued improvement in the coming years.

It was fun Saturday and maybe Sunday, but now its a new week. We beat UNC all the time in football so no need to keep gloating. We're an average football team at best this year, but that's fine considering we're one of the youngest in the nation. At times this year we show flashes of being a great team. We were dominating Florida State in the first quarter this year, and true Florida State has have close matches with virtually every ACC team BUT none of them put up record numbers like we did. Also, Jameis fucking Winston was in beast mode that game and wasn't in bizzaro mode like he was against Louisville, BC, and Florida. Also, i could be wrong but if Florida State is having so many close games with a Heisman QB and their all time leading receiver, will they be better next year when both key guys gone? I dunno, but next year seems like a good of time to try and make a run at the ACC.

Yeah I don't know enough about FSU to know how they'll be next year. I can't imagine them not taking a step back losing Winston and Greene. Clemson should be much improved offensively, but I think they lose a lot on defense. Then again, they also lose Chad Morris at OC which could be a huge blow.

I think "solid season" that everyone is referring to has more to do with going from 3-9(0-8) to 7-5(3-5) in one season.

Not sure how 'powerhouse' is defined, but there are a few that have had sustained success (Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Oregon -- as stated, and Kansas State.)

Virginia Tech - 66,000; Mississippi State - 61,000; Mississippi - 60,000; West Virginia - 60,000; Oklahoma State - 60,000; Oregon - 54,000; Kansas State - 50,000; Baylor - 45,000; Texas Christian - 45,000.

Boise St (37K)
Louisville (55K)
Stanford (50K)

Again...these aren't "powerhouses" but at least have had sustained success

ehhh...Stanford is definitely a stretch. Although they did recently have a 4 year stretch of 12-1, 11-2, 12-2, 11-3 (4 straight BCS bowls) before dropping to 7-5 this year.

But Boise has been really good lately. Finishing #18 or better 9 times since 2002.

And Louisville has won 6 conference championships since 2000 (won 9+ games 7 times during that span). Only posting 2 losing records since 1998.

Flordida state isnt exactly young but they have a couple of back to back elite classes about to ripen. They have a lot of young superstars and continue to recruit at a high level. They will reload and will likely be more dominant than this year but not as good as last year.
