a people who in the 19th/20th centuries pursued a national project akin to broader movements of self-determination around the world.

a people whose desire for national self-determination was immediately challenged by larger, hostile neighbors

There's a lot to be debated here

But I'll just point out, and I know the numbers don't make much of a difference, but it's estimated that 14,000 Ukrainian citizens have been killed in 3.5 years of fighting. In only 2 years, it's estimated about 64,000 Palestinians have been killed, and we know the majority of those are civilians. In a much, much smaller area.

The Ukrainian population is about 38 million. The population of Gaza pre-war was about 2.2 million. Again, I know that doesn't really matter, but it does put it into perspective.
